Description
I started out creating a piece that was in the Steve Reich mode of overlapping cycles of the loop that was slowed down considerably and repitched. I used different speeds of the loop in logorithmic proportion to try to create something cohesive. It was cool - but too loopy. So I scrapped it and went for a straight up guitar driven piece with the mangled loop only occurring in the chorus break.
Then I experimented with mashing the two songs together and finally took the lead guitar and reversed it in Audacity bring it back in to the parts where it originally sat with some editing - occasionally mixed with the forward guitar track.
The result is here - last modified 5/4/11 and set aside to age ever since. Not sure what I think of it - but for a few weeks it was great source of industry and experimentation. I enjoy these challenges and always tend to dive right in and then have to wait to post. I refrained from excessive remixing and went with my gut.
Besides loops there's electric guitar, bass, and keyboard used here. Oh - and only the audio loop - not the midi version.

Thanks to Smokey for putting this challenge together.

Hey Bud
This is really an interesting guitar experiment that worked well. The reversed guitar still sounds quite melodic in it's own tripy way.
Enjoyed

One of these days I'm really gonna plan out my reverse guitar lines better. Got lucky this time with how they worked in the mix.

Ominous and heavy! Could be great film score music in a suspense film. The backward guitar leads rule!

The more I listen to this
the more I hear the loop everywhere in some form or another. Thought I had pretty much buried it - but it rises like a zombie.

What I did was all pretty simple
just a kid messing around in the lab. The results of the first experiment led to the next simpler idea and then I mashed them together. Thank APOD for the aesthetic.

holy smokes bud! i saw "steve reich" and was instantly excited - i hear the reichian influence here (right down to the mallet), but i'm also really enjoying your guitar work. your description boggles my mind, but i can tell you the result is a winner!

looped for the good
this one has serious momentum with the drums and mallet work...topped with yummy guitar and spacey reverse action. It's good that you trusted your gut on the mix that you had since the final product here is quite listenable.

thanks for the download :)

Fripp-esque. Belew-esque. Bud-ique. Dark and dastartdly. Plodding a mysterious and amphorphic pathway. Always a sucker for backwards quitar. Totally missed this challenge myself, but I'm loving hearing the results.

i totally dig this...it's progressive and low-fi and down tempo and experimental all at the same time...and probably a lot of other things too. i love the beat and how you layer everything around it. sounds fantastic on headphones...the glockenspiel riff that comes back again and again is cool. filmic...suspense-filled. just the right length. more glock on the outro and fade please.

That must be the time signature of this track. You are creating something here that requires a new kind of music notation man.

Nice craftsmanship.....
I love big Guitar sound, this has that 70's hard core feel to it......
As well it's really interesting on the technical side, a remix would be
in order just to bring some of the ambient sound, on the guitars in line
but as you say you don't like to remix, so with that understanding....

I'll just say well done.....

solid. bold.
staring chaos in the face, moving forward unfazed. i like how you mix the various element and instruments. and how you end up with a strong, solid soundbed which I haven't heard before. would really work well as a soundtrack - and is just as cool as standalone track.

From that brief period...
...when Fripp invited Eno to join King Crimson... There's smoothness, there's edge and distortion, there's that singing sustain, there's that stompy, shoofly, throbby baseline... And it sounds cooler the more I listen to it...
