Lyrics
I can walk to the supermarket, drive to the coast
I can fly to the places that I wanna see the most
Play the fiddle or the flute, call my favourite prostitute
Stay in bed ‘til after ten, then go and do it all again
Ride my bike down the freeway, give a finger to the law
Buy some drugs from an alien who runs the corner store
Smash my car into a wall, punch a guy who’s six feet tall
Eat my dinner off the floor, ‘cause nothing matters any more

Don’t ever work hard at school, don’t buy into fake philosophy
Don’t ever think that life’s about conforming unnaturally
They got you on a never-ending treadmill going nowhere fast.
They’re grooming you for Harvard or Yale - make sure you that you come last

Get a job in a factory and never pay your rent
Harbour grudges and resentment from some people that you met
Sing and dance in a hospice for the terminally ill
Cut your thoat, die of AIDS and forget to make a will
Turn your back on religion go to jail for perjury
Find a word to rhyme with plastic and cosmetic surgery
Go outside get a tan, get a woman get a man
Do whatever turns you on but go and do it while you can

Don’t ever fall by the road, don’t buy into cheap reality
Don’t ever think that it’s about consuming their depravity
it’s all a never-ending treadmill turning to their delight
Wave to your life, go screw your wife, thank god it turned out white

Harvard or Yale......Harvard or Yale?

liked the ska edge to this tune. vocals and harms are great--particularly the ending sequence. Is that J singing lead? You don't sound like yourself! Love Steve's trumpet here too--perfect touch. cool surprise of the day.

Andie, Harvard, religion, drugs, sex
All the lights and alarms on my alert system went off when you posted this morning. So much packed into these three minutes, and so many topics touched upon. Oddly enough, that Andie MacDowell crap pisses me off no end, and I grumble whenever I see stuff like that. And she was so cute in the groundhog movie. The lyrics are sending the message with a spoonful, no a bottle full, of humorous sugar. Genius. The music is very well done. Top collab, and the production sparkles. Your vocals, the harmonies .. yessir. A big hit for you guys here. Cheers, standing O.

fun fun fun...
This is a lot of fun. Love the lyrics and the choppy guitar. I feel there's a slight disconnect between the uber smooth vocals and the punk feel, but not enough to comment on. Whoops I just did. Great fun, but now get back to the melancholic stuff, it chimes more with my mood!!

Holy shit! Who replaced our Julian with this guy! My favorite Hackneybloke song ever (and that includes the ones I played on). Everything about it is first rate! One of the best choruses I've ever heard here. The lyrics are amazing! SO DOWNLOADED! Now I'm off to buy a bunch of crap I don't need!

Hello Ska...
Such a different style for you Julian, and you did it nicely. I love the return "talk back" vocals (harmony during the chorus)...Bridge (2.18) is fantastic! Trumpet is badass, rhythm section is tight. everyone played very well on this, lots of cohesion. My only nit, and it is slight, is that I was left wanting more punch or pop from the snare, seems a bit thin to me, and I could always use more bass! :) Nice job guys.

the artist formally known as hackneybloke
Hi Julian. What happened to the artist formally known as hackneybloke? :-) The verse vocals don't sound like you at all. I get tinges of the old Julian in the chorus harmonies but the new, younger teenage rebel is a revelation. What a song! Poppy, preppy but packed to the rafters with goodness at the same time. The "band" does a fantastic job and the trumpet interlude was inspired. Like this a lot. Peter

First, the track is terrific. You guys sounds fab together, awesome band!

Julian, I love that you stepped outside the box here. This is so different than what we usually hear from you, and that is so cool. Did you write the lyrics as well? I dig them, this song is ultra fantastico!

Awesome collab guys!

This is a more upbeat tune than what we're used to from you, Julian. Is it coincidence that you released it now, just before the great rapture? Great harmonies from you as usual, but the variety and variation in this tune is what I really like - I think it is a great direction for you. I really enjoyed this - thanks!

LOL, you never cease to amaze me, I swear I was wondering recently if you were gonna post another song soon and wondered if it would be a ballad, and wondered how you would do on a pop tune. Well here you are dazzling us all again with your brilliant wit and superior writing skills, dude you have more talent in your little toe than most of us have in our whole families, lol. And what a group of band mates! Absolutely love this song! And John, Steve, Peter and Freddy are the bomb! Great track, great players and awesome production, looooove it!!!!!

Adore-able.
This is madeness! And while the ska influence is here, it's not Madness. It's pure Hackney (but in a good way, bloke.) I almost ran me lorry off the road listening... the lyrics and pacing remind me of the one XTC tells in their old tune English Roundabout. A nice crowd-pleaser to add to your more introspective fare. Nicely done job by ALL collabers. John, that's a fine but of guitaring you've done here, the subtle harmony lead echoes the same feel in the vocal harmonies. And Trumpet? Yeah!So yup -- this song merits adoration.

buying into
fake philosophy is my favorite pastime. Seriously, though -- this song is very well executed, and definitely fulfills its purpose. My one issue is that the lyrics are, at times, heavyhanded. Which is ironic, given that you seem to be at least partly railing AGAINST pedagogy. I LOVE the ending, by the way: that's effected trumpet, am I right? It sounds awesome, and the harmonies just make everything sound fantastic.

in a Green Day sort of way. Really like the lyrics, and the production/music is really first rate - vocals also perfect. The only thing I'd change is to give the bass a bit more gain, but that's the bass player in me talking :)

Pretty darned cool.
Thoughtful lyrics, great vocals, and that guitar solo around 1:45 is stellar! This song just cooks with energy from the get-go ... Ah, the trumpet solo at 2:28 is beautiful, with your vocal creeping out of it so slickly...and then you do a little Carpenter's routine in the background. (I suppose some folks could catch all the lyrics just listening, but I am glad that you printed them out or I would have been lost...but being lost in the sound itself wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing at all.)

an inspired musical ditty
good lyrics. The chorus is a nice payoff. Thank God it turned out white ? haha I really enjoyed the harmony parts later in the song even though they were unorthodox. You know who they reminded me of? The group America. Anyway that was my favorite part of the song. Oh and the message of this song inspired me, I'm going to upload a song from a few years ago called Treadmill, a blues rock thang.
