Description
A couple of months ago I listened to an interview in the radio with the two remaining founding members of Gang of Four. As usual, I didn't know them. They were talking about their beginnings and listening to some songs of that time. I was impressed by the simplicity and the raw sound of their first album, with the noises, the approach to writing lyrics, the guitar playing, the "democratic" mixing, etc. A lot of interesting stuff on how to build a sound.

In the meanwhile I was listening to the White Stripes and getting tired of the old modern rock recipe of 4 parallel amplifiers with 20 stomp boxes each (even virtual ones) and guitars over guitars: that doesn't leave much room for anything else.

So this is just drums, 1 bass, 1 guitar and 1 vocal. Just loud and sloppy. In the end, it is not the purest example of Gang of Four musical philosophy: for instance there is a long solo and not a lot of noise in it. But hey, they liked Hendrix too.

Thanks Tokai san for the early critic. This sounds a lot better with your ideas.

Hope you guys like it.

Lyrics
I drink the hold tongues wine
I think I cannot think
I go on the edge alone
I find you naked
And from your legs you stare at me

I know you can
I want you to stop this rain (she takes a snapshot)
Take the trip around the lips
of the driveway (the road finds beauty)
The sick is chasing the ambulance

It was not home when I was back

Throw me away if I don't serve you
Throw me away now
Like a cigarette

Thanks man. The epithet you give to the track is totally deserved: it took me some time to be done with this bitch :-) But then, only the good memories will remain and I will calmly love it again.

Raw
Powerful song in many aspects. The lyrics i know are much significant than they read, like a work of art. Always love the way your ideas are conceived, from conversations, radio shows and your own lives journeys. Great description too, again sets the scene. I agree about the space and modern rock's inability to venture outside of the formula, somehow I keep thinking i am hearing there is are more one guitar in this, space eh! the illusion you can create with it. Anyway...

T'is a great tune, a powerful ride. The vocals are much more up front which is a joy, and you really have made an impressive job mixing it all up, everything has it's own space. More please... as long as you don't end up trying to sell us the popular fizzy drink, like Jack did¡

Thanks my friend for the ears and neurons you put into double checking the lyrics and the backing track of this.
Regarding the guitars you are right, to be precise there are 4 short spots with guitar "overdubs" (ha, everything is overdubbed!). You already know where so I'm not going to tell. I guess the distortion in the bass gives the impression of another guitar in the riffs.
BTW, I will check out what kind of fizzy drink Jack is trying to sell ;-)

and sloppy is good....its gyoood....I like the rough and ready simplistic and "realistic" approach to this.I always thought the Gang of Four was a nickname for the Beatles ,but then what do I know? Wicked solo, neat track all round d/ld.

For me the Gang of Four were the 4 authors of a book entitled "software design patterns". So I didn't know neither, but your initial guess made more much sense than mine.
That gyoood word is gyoood! :-)

This rocks! Great thick punchy guitar sound ... Love it!
Great vocals. I know I like it when my head starts bobbin' up and down ... oh wow, love the crunch guitar- harmonics that bring in the solo ... wicked solo. What's making these drums? A little John Bonhamish.

Hey Karen
Good to be back. Not much time to be around here lately; just barely to make some muzak. I still have to catch up with all the good new tracks. I have around 400 unread emails of songs posted from MJ. How bad that could be: 25 hours of music from friends.

Lordy, man, you just elevated my consciousness. If you have more ideas in this style, I would love to hear them. This is a keeper. The music is so good that it almost made me forget what a great vocalist you are ... almost. Such a good performance. Lyrics, yes. "And from your legs you stare at me" -- damn, what a line! I still need to learn more (or unlearn perhaps) for that level of raw power. This sounds sanitized compared to that...

Stooges...
Ah, "Raw Power" is familiar to you, I saw the Gang of Four, and thought I could turn you onto some source material... being a "sole survivor" of an outfit that worked in that genre, your piece brought back the better memories! Not nostalgia though, don't misunderstand, the lifestyle, not the music, was the problem. Here's to lost partners!

John
I remember reading the typical guitar magazine article on how to get the tone of this or that band. Everybody seemed to use multiple racks, amplifiers and everything else. I thought it was the only way to go.
But then I listened to these guys on the radio and they demonstrated (at least to me) that the old way to sound loud still worked.

Like it? Love it!
This is great - solid back to basics - no frills supersonic blast of rock. Excellent all around and your vocals are especially strong here. Massive attack from the simple aesthetic. Really well done.
BTW - it's really hard to capture some of that early guitar sound from the likes of Gang of Four or Keith Levine with PIL.
This reminds me a little more of Soundgarden - and that's a solid endorsement.

Guitar sound
You are right: that sound is quite unique. I was driving back from work when I heard it on the radio and that sound was so different to anything I heard before. It stopped whatever I was thinking on the spot.
I don't have a proper guitar amp, just a relatively old digitech amp emulator and it doesn't come with anything remotely like that sound, so I didn't even try to start tweaking presets to get there. I used a couple of basic distortion presets in that thing. I added some eq (leaving mids) and then a very short delay (for ambience) on the guitar tracks. The tone (somehow) reminded me of Zeppelin, which is in the same genealogy branch of Soundgarden, but I think your perception of the tone is more accurate. Flattened in any way.
Thanks for mentioning the vocals. I tried at least 5 different melodies and corresponding moods, and the result of trying that much was just that I wasn't quite sure if I was going in the right direction anymore. Good to know it worked for you.
Thanks Bud for the kind comment.

Definitely like the raw feeling to it. Would like to hear the vocals just a tad more. I know it's part of the style to have them a little drown out in the guitars, but just a slight boost might be good. like the solo. nice haunting vibe to the vocals.

I know what ya mean
lol. i know what you mean. i'm in school for music production, but I'm refusing to let the technical stuff they teach you limit me to feeling I have to do things that way. In the end there are no rules and that's what makes each piece unique. What I tend to think makes my music good is the slight freedom and lack of being perfect. Often if i make a mistake it sounds cool and intentional and I'll leave it. The reason I'm in school is because I paid for my first album to be produced and it didn't feel like me. Rather do it myself even if it takes more effort.

oh I had that metal box. what a life. check out Poptones on YouTube freakin rules. yeah but still this is grunge to the max. my last "big plan" was to sell everything and head to Seattle in 1993 and live on the street until I landed in a band. ended up in rehab instead lol. STP Nirvana (Cobain was still alive!) Soundgarden Alice in Chains oh and many more. I agree music resurrected, for a short time, at least until Puddle of Staindback came and stole it's soul again.

Grunge
It was unexpected for me but after the fact it was obvious. Take a post-punk band sound as base and add Zepp+Hendrix+WhoKnowsWhatElse influences: the result has to be something like grunge.
Yeah, there are always vultures around the carcass. That's natural I guess. But the soul was long gone.
