A Bridge Too Far

Description
This song flowed from a chord sequence and some mumbling (as usual) but the first set of lyrics were about a love gone wrong (also as usual). Mindful that my longtime partner, Judy, gets a bit restless when I write (fictional) sad love songs, I woke up in the middle of the night with the new "chorus" in my head and got up and penned most of the rest of the proffered song in an hour or so. It is in the tradition of a stripped down 2-track type song but I couldn't resist adding some colour and movement in the chorus :-)

Hope you like it.

Regards,

Peter

Lyrics
A Bridge Too Far – Peter Bowen (2011)

I’m sitting in the twilight
Trying to make sense of my life
My thoughts ponder the dark night
As I weigh the wrong from right

Have I made a difference?
Or been too self-obsessed?
As I balance out the ledger
It’s hard not to be depressed

But I’ll keep going….
Blindly chasing that North Star
Without ever knowing
Did I come a bridge too far?

Bridge
This journey that I’ve travelled
Has been a privileged one
It’s not often I’ve unravelled
Does this count in the long run?

Lead over verse

I’d like to think I’m lucky
There are those worse off than me
But what gives me the right?
Was I a special invitee?

In the end I suppose I’ll take it
Keep trying to do my best
Stay upside of the remit
I sure hope I pass the test

And I’ll keep going….
Blindly chasing that North Star
Without ever knowing
Have I come a bridge too far?

And I’ll keep searching….
For treasures I have lost
And if I find meaning…
I sure hope it’s worth the cost.

Peter-
... gorgeous guitar work, really sweet. I like these kind-of-sad love songs. And nice writing and singing. I know what you mean about having to explain to Judy... I've had to do that once or twice with my wife.

Am I "blue"?
Thanks for your very supportive comments. I am glad you liked this. Yes, it is so easy to write love gone wrong ballads (even though, luckily, I haven't had too much experience with it). The number of words that rhyme with "blue" is always an attraction. I am happy with this introspective journey though. Perhaps I will use the other lyrics in a later song :-) Take care, Peter.

Introspective
This was haunting, beautiful, and reflective. Introspective confusion and questioning of life in general is a theme as old as humankind itself, but this is an especially tender and touching take on the subject. I really love the verse about having taken a privileged journey, and wondering why this should be so. This song is a very straightforward and wonderfully understated peek at a very complex question. Beautifully done. :)

love a stripped down tune...sweet and simple. what are those pinging sounds you got going on....LOVE those...i want a pinging machine!
no wonder judy's getting fed up if you keep waking up and playing your guitar. you did a good job on the vocals...but i'd have put some harmonies over the sustained parts.....to keep it interesting and flowing forward.

The machine that goes "ping" :-)
Hi Julian. Glad you liked this. The "pinging" sounds are from a collection of Boldt instruments I downloaded. This one was the Boldt Ensoniq Celesta (whatever that is). Just type "free boldt 24 pack" into Google and follow the links. There are 3 volumes of software instruments with a "pay some money if you like them" option. I sent a few dollars across because I have used several of them.

I will look to add some harmonies to the "chorus" and possibly the second and fourth verses, but I did write the song to be song just with a guitar, so that is how I presented it here. Take care, Peter.

Nice acoustic lead playing right at the start over the acoustic rhythm. Nice chorus ... really like the little nuances I'm hearing like chimes or bells. Good vocal mix. It,s warm, not overproduced. This is a real nice tune Peter

You've proffered a very fine song Peter..
Man, this sounds so great on my new speakers! Yanno, you write lyrics so naturally that they seem to have just come out of you at the time you are performing the song--as natural as a conversation; a wonderful talent you have there. You work on this both vocally and instrumentally are very superior and after listening to this for my second time today, I truly think I can say this is one of your very best Peter--very exceptional work here and a pleasure to the ears as well. Thanks! Michael

Folk song...
I don't know why, but tonight I have heard a raft of folk-style songs here. THIS ONE is really nicely written and performed, Peter. You present a philosophical topic and hammer through your thoughts with such vocal clarity and with an accompaniment that does not detract from the lyrics at all. Your pitch suffers just a tad on the top note, so I wonder if bringing this down a half or whole step might suit your voice better/easier. But the sincerity of your performance more than compensates for any few ticks in pitch. I thoroughly enjoyed this song.

Nice one Peter!
Like it a lot - I'd probably ditch the noodling in the first few verses - well, I'd probably ditch it right through the song, but I'm very much an anti-noodling kind of guy - but the song and performances are really good. You have also done a good job with production here.
Cheers from "up the coast",

Noodling...
Hi Neil. Glad you like this. The noodling kind of came about because Philip18 lent me his Gibson nylon string whilst he is off holidaying in Paris and I wanted to use it on a song. I did actually write the song with my single singer/guitarist persona in mind. Thanks for the kudos re the production. I have found it easier to record tracks in GB but mix/mastering in Presonus Studio Artist gives me a better final product. Talk soon, Peter.

Good one!
I like the guitars, including the sound of those nylon strings! Re the tune, I'm not a huge fan of extended notes in a melody - hard to maintain a sweet tone in them (unless they're part of a 3 part harmony maybe? Or add echo as the note extends?).

The song itself is thoughtful and, as usual, has depth to it which makes me want to hear what comes next and see where your thinking is going.

All up, another PB success!

It was the best of times....
Hi Philip. Yes the nylon string guitar seems to record nicely. I agree that the extended notes are a risk. They seemed to suit the song though, so I went with them. Some days I will sing them well and others it will probably grate. You've just got to pick your days :-) Thanks for your kind words. Talk soon, Peter.

Hi John. To noodle or not to noodle. Jiguma doesn't like it, you seem to. Ah, the joys of musical taste. Thanks for the kudos re the lyrics. I was quite happy with them in the end. Especially since I thought the love gone wrong lyrics I had worked up were pretty good too. It is an interesting position to be in as a song writer balancing the personal vs. generic nature of any set of lyrics. I think I made a wise choice :-) Warm regards, Peter.

Thanks for the supportive comments, Grahame. Yes, musing about one's place in the order of things is a pretty well worn theme but still holds true for most people. The Cadd9 (3rd fret bar chord) is the one that gives the song it's character. Glad you enjoyed this one. Warm regards, Peter.

Fictional Sad Love Songs .....
... are the best kind of Sad Love Songs .... this sounds great ... great production ! p.s. the meaning of life is the "pursuit" of happiness ... apparently I am told it's not the actual happiness .... you have a fabulous voice and it transcends beautifully in this tune here! Peter, this is straight from those moments where a song has popped in your head, usually at some unsuitable hour of the night and you just have to get it out. When I do this, I always lose that initial gentleness that comes from three in the morning but you've captured it perfectly. The lighter guitar panned left keeps the sound light and airy and adds a lot. Stellar vocal delivery and a beautifully executed piece of writing.
