Description
Farming Town is a song that has been around for a while surfacing now and then, (in my own little world) in several variations. I wrote it on the keyboard, but when I perform it with just a guitar, I omit that melody on the keys, and that, I feel, is basically its hook. So I included it in the track I presented to my friends, Roxy, Andy and Scott.
These oldies have kept me from writing anything new, but then, when I turn them over to you guys at MacJams, without fail, they become brand new creations. The songs take on additional writers, which is cool, and as a result they’re just as new to me as they are to you.
Scott (Scofugate) sent me a really nice drum track, and I was happy to toss out that rat-a-tat-tat I had. A microchip just can’t compare to the heart of an artist. And I’d considered a mandolin in this, but was afraid Andy (Awigze) would get tired of me bugging him all the time. But then at the urging of my musical brother, Jack, (davisamerica), I went ahead with my cane and tin cup routine, and Andy graciously produced some tracks that fit perfectly and gave the song a very homey feeling, especially in the verses. And then this song would not have been complete without angels hovering over it, and I’m fortunate to know one personally. Roxy (Roxylee) gave me a sublime set of tracks that complemented the song beautifully.
I only hope that my mixing efforts have done my friends justice. They did a wonderful job, and captured my mood perfectly. Thanks again, guys. I hope everyone enjoys this. Terry.

Lyrics
Farming Town

Terry L. Pearson

It doesn’t look like it’s going to rain today
The sun came out chasing those bothersome clouds away
Birds are splashing in puddles on the ground
There’s a rainbow stretched out high above this little farming town
On the outskirts where a pot of gold might lay
One time I picked up Mary Jones, and we drove on out a ways
We studied up on life in a field of golden maize
And our world was forty acres, and it rained for forty days

Folks are gathered at the general store
They like to talk about the weather as they sit around the door
Sometimes they speak of things they really shouldn’t tell
But the secrets of the universe are whispered there as well
Mr. Johnson, he doesn’t need that cane
And he waves it at you when he says “We got too damn much rain!”
Some may disagree, but they all nod just the same
It depends on what you planted, if you lose or if you gain

Outside my window in the sparkling trees
You can see the world is turning, you can tell it by the breeze
Sometimes in the wind I can almost hear the tales
Of old men sailing oceans, and the leaves are like ringing bells
There’s a highway that runs just north of town
And it’s slapped across the countryside. You don’t have to stick around
But much of what you’re searching for might very well be found
In a lazy, dusty main street of some little farming town

Lots of these little towns around. Sometimes I go for early morning drives through them. They're usually about seven miles apart. It's fun seeing them wake up. It's almost like walking into someone's house. Thanks for the comments. Terry

40 acres and rain
This has such a sweet spirit. Hard to believe that I had anything to do with it as I am not an actual mandolin player. Thanks for keeping it simple. Having Roxylee in this sure creates the cream at the top doesn't it? You're more than a wordsmith Terry. A true musician and glad to know ye! Always good to have another Scott collab under your belt as well.

This is such a feel-good kind of song. It must be so cool to live in a small town. I'd never know, coming from NYC and all. Wonderful vocals, Terry. Roxy did a beautiful job on the harmonies! Andy & Scott complete the perfect band. Just beautiful ya'll.

Being from a small town myself, this song captured the spirit, heart, and memories of the "good ole days". It meant a lot to me to play on this song and I am humbled! Thanks guys as you did a wonderful job here. You captured the spirit of the small town, which is slowly falling away.

...a very homey feeling...
...That says it, Terry. Your song is so simply-put, so down-to-earth and honest, and sung with such clarity...played with sure strokes...and unadorned with anything that would take away from its absolute honesty. I love this kind of music because it so accessible in every single department: vocal performance, instrumental accompaniment, the content of the lyrics. You definitely create "a very homey feeling," one so welcomed in this faster-than-a-speeding-bullet culture we live in.

Interesting
atmosphere here. Lovely song, but somehow halfway back across the pond, to my ear, with European elements, especially the trilled, extended notes on the guitar, suggesting a squeeze box. There are Old English combinations, too, in the harmonies, i think. Particularly anything to do with discussing the weather!

It is really interesting that when you write a song about a small, discrete community (and not the open highway for once, guys!) there is something of the ambience of the old country about it.

Fascinating. Really enjoyed it.

Hi Terry. Some home town philosophy very nicely presented. The mandolin fits perfectly and Roxylee's vocal additions give the song a touch of class. Scott's drum support but don't intrude on the vibe you developed. Well done. Warm regards to all, Peter.
