Description
several weeks ago there was a "fun forum" about guitar capos. some people used them, some didn't like them. so i figured i would do a song that did require a capo. i don't have a 10 fret hand span and chord inversions won't work on this tune. but it was nice to dust the capo off and use it.

and, yes the continuing saga of gort

Lyrics
Nine Lights

take a walk in the dark
and you feel the eyes are watching you
take a walk in the dark
and those lights shine
behind the closed blinds

nine lights guiding you
nine lights glare at you
marking the way that you stray away
and those lights beckon you tonight

little islands of light
one ahead and one behind
stepping stones in the night
darkness is close behind
playing tricks with your mind

nine lights guiding you
nine lights glare at you
marking the way that you stray away
and those lights beckon you tonight

take a walk to the light
and it's the last light in sight
take a walk to the light
stranded on the last island
now you swim in the dark

nine lights guiding you
nine lights glare at you
marking the way that you stray away
and those lights beckon you tonight

As crisp as it gets!
This sounds amazing Vic - great use of panning and as usual, the instrumentation is perfect. Capo's - imho - are extremely useful. We've been trying out a new singer and she sings everything a few notches up from me - capo is invaluable to find out just where we need to pitch it. Anyway, great to hear a new VH song.
I may even get firsties?
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Thanks Neil
pitch is a really good example. in the end result on this if i had not used a capo the vocal would have to be done really low........ or really high. so setting it in the key of G worked really well for me.

surreal
dreamy atmospheric perfect. love the tribal drums and gilmoresque guitar ;-) nice to draw inspiration from a discussion and capitalize it, even nicer to hear the results!! nicest = to be challenged to step up my game heck i got my capo somewhere here. ahem -- now if i can just learn guitar!

good job I like this a lot

the forum
....it got me to thinking about using one. usually the thing sits clamped to the top of the headstock over the years. i don't know if that's to make it cool or not. thanks for the listen

i always do my mixing through the headphones. since i know that is how most people listen to music. so extra time is spent with minor tweeking and adjustments. i almost tweek myself to death on mixing

Good to hear a new one
I wasn't in on the capo discussion. But, why not use them, especially on rhythms on acoustic. Makes life easier.

Anyway, really dig the sort of dark, mysterious, mood you set here. Psychedelic. Excellent words Vic.
Enjoyed. And, yes, I'm still around.

Hey Dave
it would of been impossible to pull this off with trying chord inversions instead and would of sound #@*!.

i can't really say how the words came about, they just kinda happened.

Very cool guitarwork!

I almost
always use a capo, but that's beside the point. Now this is one of your best ever numbers and performances Vic, with or without capo.... great instrumentation and vocals and great sounds throughout.... lovely stuff believe me, regards M

I like the sf style hook appropriate for a killer robot. The guitars are woven together really well, and the production is killer! I'm pro capo, it obviously worked here.

That
crazy effect at 1:00 was cool as hell.

Funny but I cannot recall ever using a capo.
My best range is in E or D so usually I just tune the guitar accordingly.

I can see if someone was really confortable in F or G it would make sense.

Cool song man.

Great production. Tops.

Killer guitar tone. Haunting lead at about 2:00. The drums sound a little stiff and maybe could use a little more hi-hat or cymbals to add some shimmer? IMHO. Just a thought. Love the robot....

i've really been into manipulating the logic effect and amp plug ins for the guitars. i'll have to give a few weeks of not hearing this song to re-evaluate drums, i originally started with electronic drums, they didn't work out that well or as i hoped

Gort saga...
When I saw that picture, I nearly flipped. The Day The Earth Stood Still is such a classic!....and you are right on his trail with this easy-going song. The instrumental bridge is very cool, too. There's not much of a tune here, but more than anything else you have achieved an "atmosphere" with this song, and it hangs together as a very intelligent composition that is well-considered in terms of its form.

Something very cool about the simple and ambiguous lyrics. Painted a lonely, searching picture, a sense of direction without know why. A Hawthorne feel to this, someone lost yet never losing the touch of the signposts...
