Reasons To Get Weary

Description
I originally recorded this song in 2005. In 2006 I inadvertently deleted its GarageBand files along with all my other GB projects. Arrgh!! Data Rescue II, to the rescue (recommended by Rich Schletty), allowed me to recover all the GB files, though they had no identifying tags... just file numbers. I eventually found all the ones for this song, which was my main purpose. Just recently I put them into GB, figured out what was what (there were a lot of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th takes on various instruments), and began re-syncing them and mixing. Here is the result. The original had a lot of background noise of which most is now removed and also had number of other poor choices in the editing process. Any way, here is what I think is a much better mix.

In 2005 I started writing this song after catching a bit of Dylan's documentary on PBS. After recording the basic guitar part and some of the lyrics, I sent it over to Craig Bakay. He took my start and added several verses of lyrics, so a lot of the credit for this song goes to him. Also at that time, I got a bunch of helpful input and feedback from Ed Hannifin, Richard Schletty, and Bill Furner. Thanks guys.

Guitar, vocal, keyboards, and harmonica: Jack Miller

Lyrics
Reasons to get weary
Reasons to give up
Reasons that tell you
Youre fresh out of luck.

I could tell you a story. I could bend your ear.
But its all too familiar, the reasons all too clear.

If you could walk just one mile in my shoes,
Youd be thinkin, Hey, whats it all been for?
All the roads lead to that same old dead end
And thats where I find myself, once more

Reasons to get weary
Reasons to go on
Reasons to keep moving
When expectations gone.

Bridge:
Its a story thats so very old.
Every man knows it well.
Wheres the path before me leading to?
It might be heaven, but I fear I might be hell.

Reasons to get weary
Anxieties to spare.
Reasons to keep grinning
When you just no longer care.

Somewhere through the mysteries a light must shine
But its never shone for me.
Still I wake every morinin, drag myself outa bed.
And keep on searching, searching endlessly.

Reasons to be hopeful
Few and far between
Those reasons keep me going
You might know what I mean.

I could tell you a story. I could bend your ear.
But its all too familiar, the reasons all too clear.

{Bridge} repeat

Reasons to get weary
Reasons to give up
Reasons that tell you
Youre fresh out of luck.

I could tell you a story. I could bend your ear.
But its all too familiar, the reasons all too clear.

I dig it a lot!
... and download. It's a keeper. Thank you!

I so much like the mood you create here.
And yes, the Dylanic kinship isn't at all wrong here - on the opposite.

But important is that the Milleric mood is left. That is something that doesn't wear out over years, I dig it a lot!

long song....
... well, the length of the tune helps add to the listener's weariness vis-a-vis the singer's lament. So it has that going for it.

Thanks, Curry. So glad to have your drop in on this Milleric song.

Hello SG...
the original mix was a bit muddy and over-reverbed (as I was wont to do in those early GB recording days), so I glad to know you think this mix sounds clear. Thanks much.

Redemption...
Isn't it great to recover what once was lost, and end up better off in the process? I like the unexpected counterpoint of the organ sound with your guitar... A gentle, organic feel permeates the piece... Very enjoyable, thanks!! Congrats on the data recovery! Oh, and sweet harp work, I meant to mention! :)

Dylanesque sound
Not Dylan lyrics, however. Weary, not stoned. I can see why you would want to recover this song. Panning for gold among the debris of a drive is work. Nice mix. Clear and clean. If there's noise in the tracks, you did a good job minimizing it. Well done.

Good to read that you think the recovery was worth effort. I wasn't sure it would be when I started out. But I'm pleased with the result. Very nice of you to chime in...

Reasons To Get Weary
I can relate to the conversational style lyric. Melody works well. Guitar is in the pocket, keys and harp work well. I'm not so sure over the role of this section "If you could walk just one mile" it seems like it is a second bridge.

Thanks Dave
Who knows the purpose of that section... I don't. It's just part of the flow of how the song developed. Iwish I could give you more, but alas... I'm just an amateur posting his songs.

Much thanks for your thoughtful comments my friend.

what a story
For this song, it was well worth plumbing the depths of the hard drive, extracting bits and re-assembling.

Great to hear this, wonderful mix, and it does have a Dylan vibe, with a twist of Jack.

The style of music, singing and harmonica really express ennui in a poignant way. Sigh.

All to clear, one mile in your shoes, Mr Dadai perfection might have been reached in this one, some cool horns synths ? towards the middle. So many reasons one reason is so I could here this song!

A story worth hearing...
Hi Jack. Good back story. You have captured the Dylan style very faithfully (but you are singing far better than he does these days :-)) The lyrics tell a story that is worth hearing and the simple arrangement allows the vocals to take centre stage. Like the organ work and the midi trumpet (?) too. Good song. Kind regards, Peter.

Hi Peter...
I think the organ and midi trumpet gives this song what it needed to allow it to flow along, since its rather long. Some other elements could have done the same thing, but the vocal and guitar were too sparse by themselves.

Thanks for you generous words. I'm happy to hear you like the song.

Reasons
I just didn't hear any, which might just be my problem, the literal meaning... with so many naked idea words on display, it was nice to have the B-3 moaning... doing the "Blonde on Blonde" is temptation few can resist, hard to re-invent the classic?
Thanks for sharing your tunes with us. I enjoyed the production on this, even the pitch challenge was working.

I love this sort of dusty road folk song. Just the word "weary" seems to fit in there so naturally. Love the lyrics. The harp is a very nice touch.

Very fine words sung here, Jack
What a joy it must have been to get this one back! I hear a
Dylanish troubadour in this, and he makes you want to hear more. A good length for your story, but I could have sat another 20 minutes without fidgeting. Mind if I keep this? Thanks. Terry

Once again, I want to call attention to Craig's part in writing these "very fine words", as you say.

Thanks Terry.

Glad you rescued this!
I know what you mean about losing stuff and recovering it (and not knowing what the heck it is--kind of a mixed blessing). Your feedback crew served you well Jack. This sounds like it should be on the soundtrack of that great film "Nashville". A good song! Your versatility as a performer always astounds me--you do it so well and seemingly with ease. Thanks for posting this--liked it lots! Michael

Yes... Ed, Rich, and Bill did give me valuable input back when I was recording this. I wasn't sure it was going in the right direction or was even a decent song. Ed especially boosted my confidence in that regard.
Your comments are sweet - especially coming from such a top performer as you. Thanks much.

Nicely done here Jack - I like the trumpet (?) in the RH channel. I can definitely hear snow in here. If I was looking for nits, I'd just suggest that it's a verse or two too long, but as I'm not, I won't ;)
