Description
And now, for something completely different.... My fourth song ever, written in 1983. I wanted to write a funky “jam” tune. The melody is simple, essential; and serves merely as a vehicle to get to the solo sections where the real fun is. The progression is fun to play over, apparently. I had the Phoenix Horns (EW&F) playing in my head when writing it. Thank heavens for Kevin Clark of Bayside Horns, who took my rudimentary ideas and turned them into genius. These guys are big time. Kevin and Matt Gawlik both have kickass solos (I so LOVE a killer baritone sax solo, it’s such an expressive and bombastic instrument, what a flavor!), and Dan O’Hara really brings the house down with his ripping organ solo. I'm the whole rhythm section, as always.

The title comes from when I was writing the tune, someone yelled out "Hey, Phil, what's your next song about?". Someone had a much better story recently, I wish it were the truth; they though it was an analogue to the Australian tradition of the walkabout. "Where's Phil?" "Oh, he's off on Songabout..."

At 28 tracks, this was by far the busiest piece on the Autumn Breeze CD...

If I could...
Make a living playing, I would, but there's just no money in it. But, thank you very much for the thought... A man can dream, after all... But I'd advise you to let that fourth song fly... I am putting my very first song on my next CD... :) I do make a reasonable side gig recording others and being a hired studio gun, but it's not a living. If only... If only... Thanks much, my friend...

Makes me wish...
..I had kept up with the saxophone! This was scrumptious Phil and Company...Standing O all the way and I'm wondering now why I'm paying $60 a ticket to see Doc Severinson and his Orch next week when I can get even better vibes here for nuttin'! Audaciously great work--thanks guys! Michael

Hi Phil.....
This was a most thrilling and envigourating recording and arrangement.

Wow. It literally took my breath away.

What a wonderful journey and all the musicians were brilliant.

Thank you.

Take care.

Another great track Phil. The composition and arrangement are excellent. Once again I'm digging your bass playing. Your slap chops are precise and tasteful. I like how you move effortlessly from the thumb to finger style playing. I dig the organ solo.

Thanks Andrew!
...especially for noticing the bass transitions. While I would not stack my pure "chops" up against some of the amazing players here, I did work very hard on that specific element, as it speaks to musicality, which is always my main focus. It's really just octaves, it's about all I know in the popping world.. :) Dan will appreciate your props on his organing... I was drooling on it, and he couldn't understand why...

powerhouse of flavors to funk up me ears:) I imagine this would be perfect for late night shows that have big bands. Do you write or produce for any commercial TV productions? Just curious...Thanks Phil for sharing! Take care, patty:)

If only I could break into TV/commercial/film scoring and underbed music, I would SO dig that. No, I don't at this time, but would sure love to!

Flying over Chicago
Something about that sax work and held notes, feels Chicago-ish, a definite compliment. Grand writing and performances here... definitely loved the horns and keys, but your crisp backing held it all together and made it a sumptuous aural feast.

Thank you!!!
I wouldn't have had the presumption to play the Chicago card; their horn arranging has always made me bleed tt was so good... :) Thanks for the props!!!

Really cool piece of music well played and presented well done. Would love to hear some of your stuff with a vocal.... just a thought!
Llarion said 2153 days ago (June 5th, 2011)
Your wish is my command...
I only have one song that has lyrics... I go to a guitar camp for a week every July called The Swannanoa Gathering, it's an amazing place where you take master classes from some of the best musicians and singers in the world all day, attend concerts by the staff in the evening, and then jam till 3AM. I wrote an anthem for them after the 2006 season, and did a little walking tour film a couple of years later...

I'm playing everything and doing all five backup vocals, my friend (and fellow camper) Larry Kadlub did the lead vox (You don't want to hear me singing lead). Drums are loops on this one, I didn't have a recordable drumset at the time...

Almost over.....
done with all the instruments still it's all in the pocket, with a lot
of feel.....
Something a big band would really enjoy doing, with all the different
parts.....Back in "83" yep...... That was the sound......

Very well done......

Hi Phil. Pro quality funk outing. Love the sax work. Dan's organ solo is a killer as well. The bass guitar shines too. Enjoyed, Peter.

Happy 80s remembering
Never enough bari sax. I played one in high school. (I couldn't afford one in real life, that one belonged to the school.) Thanks for giving him a solo! way cool. I also dug the O'Hara organ solo. There is something 1980s about this track that made me smile, a pristine virginal sense of straight up retro. Nice title. Happy stuff.
