Description
We've got a small farm that we work in between real jobs. It started as a place to keep my horses and then evolved into much more. It takes all of our money and it wears us out. But I'd rather my body fall apart than my mind wear out sitting at my desk. I guess this is a way to make sure that a job I love kills me, and still provide a good living for my family. I know that's nuts. But aside from that it allows us to raise our daughter close to the ground, which has always seemed to me to be important. But anyway farming of any kind takes a kind of hard headed perseverance in the face of obvious and inevitable failure - it's a nearly psychotic profession. Things rarely go right. The weather is always out to kill you. And the animals are always looking to get into trouble. And you get so wrapped up into knocking your head against the wall. But every once in a while you stop to catch your breath and a nice breeze comes up and the sun is setting over the mountains and you think to yourself my god what a beautiful place and it's worth it times ten.

musically, i was trying to capture that sense of marching on, the combination of rote and beauty, and I was trying to keep it spare and honest.

Lyrics
lately
you and me
been luckless as a couple rubes
twelve dimes to the dollar
heads they win
tails we lose
but tonite there's a soft rain
growing our bank account
cat bird on the porch swing
lets find out what that's about
there's some kind of magic tonight
let's sit a spell

seems like
the good life
well we missed it along the way
got too busy living i guess
the money comes
but it don't stay
but tonight i got that old high feeling
like there's something good round the bend
the kids at 4H
we got some time to spend
yeah there's some kind of magic tonight
let's sit a spell

My dad grew up on a small farm. When I was born he owned a small dairy farm. It was too hard to make ends meet and provide for four young children. Love the lyrics and your vocal delivery of them! You have my respect.

make ends meet
it's a lot of work and it doesn't pay. cattle farmers are doing OK around here now because beef is up, and you can hay whatever land your not grazing, and hay seems like it's always up. but in general it's a lot of work to just do "OK". glad you liked the vocals. I was going for a thad cockeral kind of vibe.

4H?
There's only 1 "H" in hayseed.....

I see you're headed far away from Motown on this one. Flying down that bumpy dirt road with beer cans being tossed through the back window of the truck. It's not too different from a few of your more recent tunes ("Thing about cheatin" and "Homewrecker") but way, way more stripped down than either of those. I like what your doing here with the sparse and wide instrumental parts, but I was expecting that wonky guitar soloing to go somewhere.

Knowing you like I do, I know that the wandering, almost stumbling guitar riff was likely emphasizing the idea of sitting for a spell and wasn't intended to go any where, which it didn't. That's the only moment where I see your indie rocker sensibility poke it's purple mohawked head out and announce it's rejection of what is expected. Punk kid.

Lyrically, I like these kind of stories that you write. You did a pretty good job singing it, but I think you're voice is in it's best form when you're hollerin' out the window of the General Lee.

Nevertheless, I've downloaded it because it's a good song from the other side of Tempie.

I love the description as well. That's another piece of art to go with the tune.

yelling out the window of the general lee
that's the next one. i liked the tension of the little solo just kind of dropping off. i did the same thing with the organ early into the solo. i liked the idea of the song just trailing away. it's a front porch song.

it would be the perfect life
if we were independently wealthy :) as a hobby, it can't be beat. it's when you're trying to make it pay for itself that it starts to fray. but it's still a beautiful way to live, imo. glad you liked it - thanks for the listen!

I
Grew up on an urban farm full of metal horses and steel birds...
I dig the mastering on this track. Has an old vibe to it and sits somewhere between the eagles and Jackson Browne (what I've heard of theirs).
The outro is a little odd but I think I get it :)
A fine song

man i'm glad you got that vibe - that's exactly what I was going for. I stripped all the effects out except for some amp reverb and EQ'd it for a lot of space. i wanted front porch but STUDIO front porch. thanks for the listen!

it's an old john hiatt trick
a capo and some sus 4's and you get a mandolin vibe but a bigger sound than you could get with a mandolin. glad you like the vocal, i wasn't sure if i got the first verse the way i wanted it. thanks for the listen man.

I love th way that this song just dissolves at the end, just like rain melting into the freshly tilled soil. Cool story, and a worthy pursuit, both musically and in terms of your striving to remain connected to the earth. I envy and pity you, it must be so hard - so rewarding. Your southern accent really comes out in this one.

man so cool that you got it, that ending, that's exactly what I was trying to do, just fade away, i could hear the sound of the rain fading as the song cuts away from the couple on the porch.

farming would be really hard if it was my sole source of income. i know a lot of 'real' farmers and i have tons of respect for them. as it is it's hard but i can always walk away from it, if i absolutely have to. those other guys, they can't walk away.

what better way to hang on to a good moment than to make a song about it? and a very nice one it is too. I like that recurring descending riff on the higher pitched guitar part, it seems to capture the whole mood of the thing. Applause!

that's either a great way to hang on to a moment or a great way to kill it forever. depends on the tune ha. i've always loved that CSN tune 'our house', it's probably set me up for a lifetime of disappointment but what a great song, that tune is always in my mind when i write a slow and happy/appreciative song.

Apologies
Craig. I am not on here as regularly as I used to be. What a wonderful song. I grew up doing farm work every summer, tractor driving, bale carting etc. This is so effocative of the feelings of those times. Really like the "John Deere" pic as well. It reminded slightly of a track by Don Henley called "Month of Sundays". D/L. Cheers Mark

i didn't think don henley until after i was finished and heard the final product but i guess the eagles are always in the back of my mind somewhere. haying is itchy work. but most kids who hay as a summer job get to drive the truck at some point well before they're 'old enough' so that's the reward. thanks for the listen man.

An excellent listen and the description is an education. No farmers this century or last for us, just urban jungles with their own sort of problems.

driving into NYC as a teenager with a school group and thinking about the people living in those high rise apartment buildings and honestly i could have described living on mars better than I could have imagined what their lives were like. totally different worlds. but i still enjoyed NYC. since then i've lived in cities but always feel more at home escaping off into the woods.

Turned onto this by Buds forum post. Very well done. Lyrics are king here as they should be the focus.

Born and raised and have always lived in the suburbs near big cities, but recently moved to the more rural suburbs of Phoenix and I have some friends that live on small horse ranches here, so the images of the song are not completely foreign to me.

Taste Tone and Tenacity
Fantastic to hear you on this vibe. Your vocals are perfectly drawn, congrats on the characterization, the heartfelt lyric works well.
The production has qualities that make the proceedings sound "thin". If this was intentional, allow me to take off my hat.
If it happened as an accident I'd be shocked but pleased, it's all unconscious after a while-artful indeed Craige!
