Funk on a Stick (w/ scofugate)

Description
This week was "drum solo" week on David Letterman. I hope you had a chance to catch Neil Peart. He was one of the featured drummers and gave an incredible performance. I've always had an affinity for the drums. I started out as a drummer and my first semi-pro gigs were as a drummer before I switched to stringed instruments.

Anyway, I started this song with a strong focus on the drums and the bass. I love the sound of the Chapman Stick and this song started with a CS groove and some sampled drums. I played it for Scott Fugate and he liked it and offered his services on drums. I loved what he came up with and asked him if he wouldn't mind adding a drum solo near the end.

I think the drums really make this song and they inspired me to do the percussive instrumentation used throughout.

Here is a list of instrumentation used:
- Bass: Chapman Stick, Synth Bass
- Drums: Scott, Sampled Loops, Sampled reverse cymbal and "Bit Hit".
- Vocals: Steve
- Guitars: PRS
- Keyboards: Moog, Clavinet, B3, Glockenspiel, Arp synth

Lyrics
How can you say
How can you say
and Who can you say it to?

You are so blue
Such a deep, dark blue
How blue are you?
How blue are you?
How blue?
So blue I'm turning red

Red is the color of the hair on my head
Or maybe its the color of my bed
Chartreuse is a color I don't understand
Maybe its because I'm a man

I like the colors I see
The blues, the reds and maybe the chartreuse too.

Open your eyes
Open your eyes
and tell me what do you see?

I see colors all around
White, black and the colors in between

Magenta, Atomic Tangerine
Fuchsia, Caribbean Green

Electric Lime, Aqua Marine,
Burnt Sienna, Forest Green

Mango Tango, Mountain Meadow
Hot Magenta, Lemon Yellow

Open your eyes
Open your eyes
and tell me what do you see?

I see colors all around
White, black and the colors in between

Funk on a Stick (w/ scofugate)
Very cool track. All the complexity of a prog-rock workout with the fun of a funk jam. Of course the drummer rocks but so does the rest of the band. I'm very impressed with your singing. Your writing and production chops are amazing.

Thanks, Andrew
I appreciate your comments. Originally I was going to make this an instrumental. As it evolved I got hooked on this color theme. I'm glad you like the vocals. I was going to make the "Crayola section" a 4 or 5 part harmony piece (ala Gentle Giant) but decided to leave it as is for the sake of expediency.

The beauty of the Moog
I have always loved the sound of those vintage analog Moog synths. Thank God the models (in soft synths) are so close to the original that we can use those great sounds without having to deal with the physical instrument.

I ditto everything you said here about Scott. I think he is unbelievably great in this. He really gets these odd rhythms I keep throwing at him. He is a natural talent.

Thanks, Karen. Greatly appreciated.

Funk on a Stick
you sure don't see to many people using a chapman stick anymore. but man, you sure know how to whip it in to shape.

boy this sure takes one head on a cool trip. lots of cool riffs... I'm sure that kept Scott on his toes. excellent work guys!

Thanks, Vic
I've loved the sound of the stick since I first heard Tony Levin play one with KC. It is a naturally funky instrument. It blends really will with a other percussive instruments. The high register strings on the stick are pretty close to clavinet which allow them to pare pretty easily. Scott dug right in and took ownership of this really easily.

Thanks, Daug. I don't know how the vocals drifted into the Crayola Prism. I had a hard time writing lyrics and reciting the crayon names seemed more artsy than reading the phone book.

Chartreuse....
Hi Steve. Love the lyrics. "Chartreuse is a color I don't understand
Maybe its because I'm a man" LOL
Prog funk with Scott's drums and the B3 highlights. Congratulations. Regards to both of you, Peter.

Thanks, Peter
I'm not sure where that Chartreuse line came from... My wife is a visual artist. To her everything is about the harmony of colors. I'm far more auditory, with deep appreciation for sonic harmonies. Yin and Yang. I know there are lots of men with great sense of color space, but it is often lost on me.

This song was all about rhythm from the very beginning. I shared it with Scott early on and he fit like a glove from the start.

Funk on a Stick
First I love this funky fusiony groove. That reversed symbol is cool. This is well composed. I love that moog sound ... don't hear enough of that anymore. I like the way you combined the real drums in the mix ... sounds great!

Impressionistic prog
I dig the progged-up Stevie Wonder clav-like stick intro.
The impressionistic lyrics remind of the drug-rattled days of King Crimson blowing minds and speakers. This has an art house epic journey through mushroom fields while looking at moveable Peter Maxx posters retro post-modern vibe...! Very cool.

Nice___
Funky - IMO needs more rev on the vox to match the music - they sound like they're in separate rooms - Sounds like a lot of work went into this so please don't be offended by my comment - Nice job

Enjoyed - Thanks for sharing,

On a stick
You just can't beat Mr F for sheer outrageous funkyness. When he walks down the street, the grass says "damn!" =)
This is wicked guys. To say it set the feet tapping is an understatement but it has a relentless vibe that follows you long after the song stops! That chartreuse line killed me!

Awesome
I've been playing catch-up for 2 days, whew. This is funky goodness right here, the sounds are just parading through my headphones. Steve, what an interesting play on words. It allows the listener to interpret them any way they deem fit, very clever. Great vocals as well, love the music. That drum solo is prodigious, way to go Scott! Awesome collab guys!

funk on a Stick
Totally out of control. Complete funkified chaos. Love it. Very King Crimson. The vox could use a slightly heavier hit of reverb to glue them to the music. They seem a little disconnected/ tacked on. Just a thought. Awesome.

I loved Tony Levin's
stick work in King Crimson, and this has many KC memories going on. I'm totally impressed Steve - I've often wondered about getting a stick, but it is just so daunting to me. Love all the other instruments too. Scott, this is the best drumming I've heard from you - it sounds like you've just fallen into a style that sits perfectly with you. Definitely one of my favourite posts this year.
Excellent stuff.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

even that name is so cool, goes with the music me thinks. I like the colours I see too. Better still the precision and expression of notes here just goes to show this is a class act. Progressive jazz. Fine musicianship on show here, and an exhilarating listen.

A multicolored, sonic popstickle!
The keys are killing me, they really drive da funk home. Clear tones all around give every instrument its space in the soundstage. Duh -- I know you're a mad scientist at the virtual panel. Good bit of fun on the colors in your lyrics, too.
