When I See You

Description
this song was basically me imagining that Paul Westerberg from the Replacements (huge influence on my pop songwriting) got a synthesizer and a computer and wrote a silly love song. It would also work as a sloppy indie rock guitar song.

this was also kind of a personal LIOLI as I made a drum loop and then used it a whole bunch in different configurations. probably should have spent more time on the mix, but if I didn't do it today, it wouldn't happen for another week. if anyone feels like adding a guitar track to this one, knock yourself out. can't remember the key, but it's at 103 BPM.

Lyrics
i'm feeling pretty good
that everything will work out right tonight
if i play it right

i've got some time i've got some cash and
we can use my car tonight
if it works alright

lonely days
are for someone else
lonely days
are for someone else

when i see you
i get excited inside
and i don't know how to explain it
it's so dreamy and none of my friends
understand how it is
that you haunt my days
when i see you
i get a feeling inside
and i don't know how to explain it
i'm so nervous and none of my friends
understand how it is
that you haunt my days

i feel like we should go somewhere
kind of far away today
it could take all day
there's nothing better
than just spending time together
it seems so right
when it's me and you

lonely days
are for someone else
lonely days
are for someone else

when i see you
i get excited inside
and i don't know how to explain it
it's so dreamy and none of my friends
understand how it is
when you haunt my days
when i see you
i get a feeling inside
and i don't know how to explain it
i'm so nervous and none of my friends
understand how it is
when you haunt my days

wanna spend my time
wanna spend my time with you
wanna spend my time
wanna spend my time with you

when i see you
i get excited inside
and i don't know how to explain it
it's so dreamy and none of my friends
understand how it is
when you haunt my days
when i see you
i get a feeling inside
and i don't know how to explain it
i'm so nervous and none of my friends
understand how it is
when you haunt my days

when i see you
when i see your face
when i see you (everything will be alright)
when i see your face
when i see you (everything will be alright)
when i see your face
when i see you (everything will be alright)
when i see your face....

When I See You
Great songwriting! Downloaded!

Maybe Paul is writing silly love songs with a synth and a computer.

Low end greatness!
That cool echoey scratching a tube kind of sound in the background really tripped me out, Love the build right before you sing when I see you. At 3:14 the sparseness just screams to be listened to, the ends fades out real nice!

that tube thing was a percussion sound that i ran through a filter. glad you liked.

When I See You
As soon as I read - "add a guitar track" I had to break out the acoustic and figure out the chords. It's a happy lil jammy to noodle to. What a groovy little number. Dig it. Paul W. would be proud. He's always been on of my major influences as well.

It's A minor, for the record...
Diggin the lyric on this a lot... you wove a playful and appropriate melody through the darkness.. I also love the irony of a happy love song, in a minor key... :) Is the love unrequited? Not sure it needs a guitar part, I'm kinda happy with the level sparseness. Maybe a gentle reggae kind of upstrum on the backbeats, but not much more... It works as is though!

aha
i guess you probably noticed that the chords are the same all the way through the song. it was one of those "lets see how much i can milk from this chord progression" things. thanks so much for the listen. unrequited love is always worth writing about, but this was loosely based on my wife and kids.

well............. cool!
sure does have a bit of 80's new wave going on.... without sounding dated. some really cool synth/keyboard sounds that you produced here, too.

Pet Replacement Shop Boys
Great groove Michael - really swings in a nice way - the percussive crackles have a hand clap feel to them. Hey wait - I think I hear some actual hand claps now. Love the quiet piano break.

kevin
thanks. fake hand claps (drum machine sample). the drums are a little iffy here and there, but I used a kit that was a recording of footsteps in the snow and and I bounced it down before checking to make sure the attack was working with the acoustic drum set. ah well, live and learn. glad you stopped by.

you make it sound so effortless and easy
love the pop simplicity which is actually extremely clever
nice synth work

is that a stomach in the song art?

Really nice
pace on this.... drum loops are great, as is all the accompaniment.... the subdued vocals go well here and I like the little intermittent synth sounds. I think it sounds really great as it is without a guitar track Michael..... it moves along so smoothly.... good one, regards M

thanks
the drums were the fun part on this one. I had taken one loop that I put together and then just kept bouncing out different versions with different effects on it, and then just arranged it through the song over the acoustic drum part.

hi michael: you're just too cool for your shirt! i love that little piano part, i love the feel of this song, those crackly thingees, and of course your way-too-cool voice!

that piano part is ultra cheesy, and supposed to sound like a looped sample, although I should have messed up the end point more to get that effect. thanks so much for your ever present nice-ness, and I'm glad you liked the tune.

Good one
Wonderful arrangement! So much going on here but blending so well. Like your world weary voice of hard knocks wisdom here. The organ carrying the chord structure works especially well. Whatever happened to the organ in rock music?

you know, the organ is the coolest instrument ever. it can sound cheesy, rocking, majestic, forlorn,... it really deserves to be heard more often IMO. thanks for checking this out.

When I See You
Another terrific vocal. Harmonies are working well. You're getting a lot of mileage out of that chord progression. I think it works because the phrasing changes up on the chorus. Quirky cool arrangement & mix.

yup: same chords ALL THE WAY THROUGH. ridonkulous huh? sometimes it's fun to try and see if a whole song can be made with something completely underdeveloped. or am i just lazy? thanks for stopping by.

when i see you
i always admire your 'i'm not really trying' vocal delivery - not to mention the clever lyrics....using the car if it's alright. i heard souixie and the banshees in this...can't remember what the track's called but i can hear it in my head.....googled it....Israel...it reminded me of that. that and 'Air'. i like the high synth sounds....like fluffy pet toys singing. the section at 3.25 with the beat and those squeaks and your effortless vocal is really cool. your stuff is always varied and interesting. great writing. great track.

Great
song Michael, love that repeating chord sequence, works really great here with the instruments used and your playing.
Nice breaks too, love the bridge and the bass line is perfect as are your vocals, great rhythm and very much enjoyed.

Starts with a real catchy 3 chord melody. Nice vocals. Thats great you make your own drum loop ... sounds great. That synth sound that happens in the bridge /chorus ... sounds like little alien voices ... really like it. Very catchy.

I really like your songwriting style. This is the kind of music I like to listen to, but for some reason I can't write this way when I do my own music. I think it probably makes me appreciate it more. I'm starting to amass quite the M2 collection on my iPod.
