Description
An ambient piece which starts low in volume but with some cracking noises efter a little, so take care not to raise the volume too high in the beginning...

So we were going to have this party at work with a theme of "urkraft" (Swedish) which is kind of difficult to translate but to me it is a lot about original power, the initial spark, what makes the world go around (no, not money!) and things like that. A dance and drum group of this name, Urkraft, was coming but the staff were loosly encouraged to contribute with our own talents so I thought I'd make this an excuse to make some music again after several months of silence. The result is what you hear here. The playing of the song at the party was a complete failure, btw, mainly because of bad equipment and presentation and I guess a rather rude crowd who kept talking through its duration. But then again, its hardly a party tune and in a genre that most people may not fancy a lot.

Anyway, I think it catches some of the images I get from the theme and I am pretty happy with the result. I would however like some additional drums/percussion following some of the thundercracking noises in the first part. Please help me with this if you want. I have been looking for some fitting sounds myself but can't find them and while doing that I have pretty much ruined the original GB file so I may never get another decent "original" mix of the piece.

I should mention that much of the sounds you hear are some long samples I found in GB mixed together for a nice effect, in case you should recognize them...

Thank you for listening and maybe leaving a comment - always much appreciated :-)

Take care,
Henrik

That was fast. Thanks for a very nice comment. Love it when people download as well :-) About the crowd, I might add that I made a slide show from the party and had this music as a soundtrack, so I guess they got it eventually ;-)

Loved your Crystal piece, btw.

I've been anxiously Wotan Thor this!
Henrik, Those are some really deep sounds, in a very very "Loki" :-)

Love this, it does indeed have the "beginning of the world" lonely mysterious feel to it. Well done! And you know if you had invited me to the party (maybe my invite got lost in the mail?) I would have quietly listened and enjoyed it. Great work here.

Thank you!
For this nice comment and for previewing it earlier. We both had the feeling then there might be some percussion missing in a few places. I have been listening for and testing quite a few but nothing seems to fit the way I'd like it. Maybe someone out there would like to try...

So you get some old germanic vibes from this? I get more of a middle-eastern feeling with the voice and all. Or did you just come home from watching the Thor movie at the cinema ;-)

Anyway, I am very happy you liked it.

Take care,
Henke

Thorry about that...
No, actually I have not seen the Thor movie, I was simply trying to come up with some Awful Norse God puns for you :-) This didn't sound particularly Germanic, but rather "other-worldly", and definitely big. The voice near the end did give me a little feeling of the emerging "voice of man" in a primal way, it seemed to fit.

You know us dragons, you always have to be on your Midgard against bad wordplay.

Glad you liked the mix. About the samples I did find them in GB, but they might come from somewhere else. I have Logic Studio 8 installed for example and a LOT from that is also visible in GB, which is great, since I like better to work in GB than in Logic.

Switched Headphones
Henrik this is very very good. I love the slow development and the crashes. Did you use a duduk sample in there? And the rise and fall breathing of the synths along with the use of the vocal is magic. I DO get a origin of a world kind of feel to this piece. I've listened twice with earbuds but they didn't cut it so now I'm on my surround the ear noise cancellers and this mix is lovely. There is a middle eastern influence to be sure, but I think you have taken this into a new direction that makes it even more ancient (and middle eastern is pretty ancient as it is).

Just toward the end of the tune you introduce what sounds like a drum-like synth beat at a regular interval. I thought this would morph into a second phase of the piece (reminded me of the way Oxygene was split into movements that linked often by introducing the beat of the following movement and then sort of cross-fading into the new movement. I would love to have this go on into movement 2 carrying on with that beat. Something kind of tribal, like a phase II of the origin story.

I was thinking when I read about urkraft that it reminded me of Thomas Covenant, who was called the Ur-lord I recall (?) I don't know the Ur root comes from Nordic languages, but it seemed similar to me. Then later in your comment replies below I read about your series of pieces written with similar themes (I had forgotten about that).

If you would like to extend this piece and want any additional sounds for the second (or this) movement, let me know. I have lots of drum and other samples. (no pressure :)

Also, I'm not sure where I would put additional drums into this movement. It seems complete with the random blasts you already have there. Unless you mean between 1:50 and 2:05.

I'm on my sixth listen to this one which means it's been downloaded. Many thanks!

Be well,
Doug

Henke said 2365 days ago (June 21st, 2011)
Wow, Doug
Thanks for this long and interesting comment :-)

Where to start?! Well, first thanks for listening so carefully, even with various equipment. As opposed to some overmixed pop artists I prefer stuff that doesn't give it all away on the first listen, I want to be able to listen many times and still discover new things (probably because I DO listen many times to my own stuff lol ). With that said I have a definite feeling that it is NOT I who make my music. The harder I try the worse it gets, but when I let loose things tend to fall into place. I have a great muse. A pity she only works part time with me, though ;-)

For this song I actually only have two tracks with my own notes/pencil lines with slightly altered settings of "Dramatic Moment" and "Izmir Ambience". To this about 6 long samples are added one or more playing at a time, and faded in and out. One of them is called Doudouks Around Long but the same instrument seems to be present in "Desert Heat" as well.

I would have liked to have come up with the idea of that rythmic beat at the end myself, but my muse decided that all on her own. Actually I didn't even hear it was there until the song was just about finished. That is, it's part of one of the samples :-/ I totally get your Oxygen point however and am now hoping for another visit of the muse. Hopefully I'll cope with what material I have myself, but thanks a bunch for the offer. If I am at a loss I'll keep it in mind all the same.

Also, I am really very very happy you heard the Covenant sound in this even before I spelled it out. Means a great deal to me. It would be awesaome to be able to fill a CD's worth of Covenant material at some time...

About adding more percussion I'm starting to feel it may not be needed. Maybe the muse was trying to tell me when I failed to add it every time. Even when I tried to chop up and reuse the present "thundercrackers" I didn't get the visible part of the sound that I had marked. I guess I could have done this in Audacity or something, but a bit strange behaviour still. Or maybe my trusty old G5 is sensing that I am planning to get a new iMac anytime soon ;-)

Again, thank you very much for listening and commenting so detailed. Made my day.

Take care,
Henke

Hi Paul
Thanks for listening and commenting. I am glad you found decorum between idea and music, especially as I actually tried to make the music to an idea this time. Otherwise I mostly seem to get the idea from the music I've just made*.

* "I've made" = "Me and my muse have made", compare answer to Doug's comment above :-)

You take care too.

So glad..
.. you've finally got a new tune up. And such a good one too. Really nice build up and the vocal samples are brilliant. One for the "Henke" playlist!

If I wanted to put in some extra percussion, [though I don't think you need to] I'd be inclined to use some kettle drums, but sparingly. There's a setting in GB, if you have the Symphony jampack - it's the orchestral kit. Play around with your midi keyboard, or load a loop and tweak it, and maybe play with the reverb settings.

It's a great ambient piece whatever. Nice one!

And I am glad
that you found it and that you liked what you heard - and commented so generously ;-) Special thanks for percussion tips. I know these things are there but I never seem to get the punch in the sound that I am looking for, or in the right place for that matter... A bit more patience might do the trick, I guess...

I have just now prepared a new file for "Origins 2" according to Doug's request. Remains to see if I can fill it with some nice soundzzzz.

Thanks again. Hope all is well with you (and your back?)!

There is a lot of suspense to the beginning of this piece - sounds really cool in the headphones too. Loops or not you have a real knack for putting cool stuff together and the mix sounds awesome and really well thought out - the people at your party really missed out - but we didn't - thanks!

Beginning of a movie was what I thought too, only probably not the (first) Covenant movie, which is set in a modern time before he is "transfered" to "the Land". But again, I guess a good director/editor could solve that little problem ;-) Anyway, thanks for listening and commenting, much appreciated.

One of your best. It works as is, even though I understand your desire for more fireworks. I agree with Doug about the percussive synth beats towards the end. Sounds like this could launch into a new section. And I think that could work very well. It doesn't surprise me that this wouldn't go over at a social gathering. This kind of music is best consumed away from the madding crowd. That's no reflection on the quality of the composition and production, both of which are tops. Thank you for the free download.

Wicked underscore material...
My mind was playing the beginning of a spy movie or something, lots of people in shadows, during a storm, doing bad things to thwart the capitalist peeg Americans... Love the sort of reedy muted trumpet kind of sound that comes in, just adds even more mystery! The flute is like the sun peeking through the clouds after the horrible storm... Love the textures, the swelling movement, and the thunderous low end...
