Description
I was at NXNE in Toronto this past week and got inspired. I feel like there are a lot of issues with this track, but it was loads of fun to record, so I'm not too bothered. Cheers!

Lyrics
Ovid On A Rocking Horse

The chorus of your muscles waits
Upon each crooked step you take
And bleeds in dew upon the ground.

And Mother, I would be content
To trap you in your firmament –
Leave you padlocked and bound.

Your seas are sailed by paper boats,
Your songs are sung from velvet throats –
These suns have scraped their knees.

And I’d have wagered that no dawn
Would bloom above you like a yawn
Until you learned to plead.

Oh
Yours, the frayed remains of a world that colored you gold,
Yours, the mosaic stains as blush upon this ochre mold –
You’ll let your joints still, though your seasons will never grow old

I’ll live however long it takes
To cross your staggering bridge and slake
The thirsting in my feet.

And Ovid on a rocking horse
Would steer an empire off its course,
Dream manifold retreats –
Though these seasons will never grow old.

Firsties!

Hooked by the bass in the first 5 seconds. Totally fun, I bet it wasa blast to do Yup, lots of issues, but you admitted that, so I'll dispense with the critique. It has a real "world music" african vibe to it in a cyclically revolving way. Thanks! Wish there was a DL button. I'd like to own this one.

thanks for the listen
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Please let me have it regarding the things that are wrong with it -- I take any opportunity I can to improve. Maybe the issues I'm hearing (they've mostly got to do with the crispness of the vocal recording and the mix) aren't the same as those you noticed.

Cheers, and thanks again

Yo yo
Something really cool here. Issues are only really in the tightness of the playing and muffled vox but this is easily good enough to tell us your onto a winner.
These are my favourite set of lyrics from you too. Not to overboard with the thesaurus! Your vocal ideas are really great and that little splash of high backing vocal was sweet. Maybe more of that?
Nice one

PS ManU didn't have a chance in he'll :)

Yah ... the bass is pretty cool. This is very original ... like the hand body percussion . Good delivery of your lyrics ... I think you need to separate the elements in the mix more . Pan things to the right and left and keep your main vocal in the center ... harmonies off to the side a touch. You have some original vocal ideas. Cool ideas.

Hi Ben - well i really like the idea of this a whole lot. your lyrics are so thoughtful. to me your vocals just sound a bit "off" in places - your vocal melody challenging to sing and it sounds like it might be worth practicing a bit more and try another pass. hopefully julian will show up soon and give you actually good help! your music is consistently creative!

I like the groove, cool bass line and guitar slashes fit well. My only nit is that the vocal phrasing seems to wander off the groove at points.

i like the riff and the vocal delivery. the guitar crashes in a bit....but i got used to it and learned to love it too. the percussive beat works well too (are you just slapping something)...and then the guitar riff is cool around 1.20.
you're really developing into something unique and interesting. the raw production values work with this style too. dylan and drake all mixed up....but ultimately pure tf10music. cool.

Cool!
The weird bassline seems delightfully atonal until it's resolved by the guitar. I missed the atonality following resolution, so in that way, yeah, the guitar clashes. But man, this is wickedly cool, anyway. And the raw prod is definitely a winner here.

You have a way with abstract poetry that would make Lennon and Dylan proud.

"Your seas are sailed by paper boats,
Your songs are sung from velvet throats –
These suns have scraped their knees."

I love that!

The guitar line and sound at the beginning is quite good. There's a great thumping percussive sound to it that works with the hand and thigh slaps (that's what the percussion sounds like to me.) I like the use of additional guitar lines to build this harmonically.

We all post tracks with issues. But you got a lot out of a guitar and your body on this one! I'm glad the issues didn't stop you from posting this!

Ben
I'm starting to wonder if we're being "skweryled" here by you, The dramatic improvement from your first post to this defies logic, I am and I believe you a person with very little natural God given innate musical aptitude, yet your sheer determination and passion drive you to a place where you are not going to be denied, I couldn't sing worth a hill of beans until I was in my late twenties, just would not be denied, if you continue this course I maintain we will all say we knew you when.
This is by far my fav of yours across the board, especially the lyrics, this song/arrangement/feel/lyrics/'instrumentation", smacks of genius!

thanks so much
everyone! In answer to some questions, yes, the percussion was me clapping. I took a few comments here, specifically those that dealt with the muffled vocals, and did a different mix that I believe works far better. As always, Macjams, thanks so much for your support!

Cheers,
Ben

Jumping track mate. I love the way that riff bounces around and you can really tell that you're having fun (that's the main idea, right?) I'll not repeat the advice others have given above but it's all a learning curve for us all. Plenty of enthusiasm, well thought out delivery and a straight from the hip delivery that keeps everything fresh. Keep doing what you're doing mate.

I like
the whole idea of this Ben - lots of issues, but I'd sure be sitting around until the end if I heard this crank up at a venue.
I like the revolving feel, and if you were going to polish this more, I'd be suggesting you really emphasise that.
Cool post!

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
