Description
This is a song we recorded in the early seventies at The Marine Club, Southport Merseyside. I managed to retrieve it from my old reel-to reel tape, though I'm sorry there's about half of the first verse missing. Even so I think it's worth a listen, though you can hear the glasses clinking in the background. We, Keith, Yvonne and myself, used to go in early in order to rehearse and this was one of those occasions when we were preparing for a talent contest.... hope you like this from 1972 when I was 39. That's me hitting all the high notes in the harmony. I did run it through Ozone 3.

I love it Maurice
It's so nice when you get a chance to revisit the past like this and remember when. It's not often you can recover something as old as this is off an old reel tape and have it sound like anything you would want to play for someone because of tape degradation. But the quality of this recording has stood the test of time, partly from luck, and partly, I'm sure because of Ozone helping you bring it back.

The singing is right in the pocket and you all sound so very good. Kudos for the rendition and the way you sang it, and for allowing us to hear you sing from that time long ago.

Thanks Maurice, I love it.

Tight harmony
It's nice to have the old tapes. The heartbreakers are the ones from the mid-seventies on which get sticky. The cheap tapes have survived better than the expensive mastering grades. At least they can usually be baked and played one time for digitizing.

Nice trio. You all certainly didn't embarrass yourselves.

I think also
that it's the conditions in which you store old tapes that decides how well they survive. I had these in a drawer in a warm room all these years, so I've been lucky, but the snag is that my Grundig recorder packed up years ago and I had to borrow a machine to get these songs. Thank you for calling in to listen Henry, regards M

What a great old recording Maurice...fabulous vocals, love the live ambience. Great that you still have all these old recordings to share with the wider world in 2011

Hi Steve
Yes, the ambience is certainly there with the whistling mic and the glasses clinking LOL.... I forgot to say that in those days when we played as a trio, I played Congas while Keith played guitar and Yvonne Tambourine and sometimes guitar, regards M

Blast from the past
....and really from the past ....you know there is a warmth in the sound and mellowness that is in some part due to the recording media as well as the way of the players making a great rendition of a classic song. Sheesh I was in junior school and that 6th form dance was still a few years away....great post Maurice.

well cool ...
Love these things and when it is a great performance it is just a magical listen. I can remember learning the trumpet solo for this in middle school...scared the heck out of me but I fell in love with the tune. Lost the solo slot but gained a musical gem of a song. you guys sound wonderful.

I'm feeling all tipsy. The reverb is killer and the glass tinkling, absolutely perfect. Nice to know someone could hit those high notes back then. Incredibly warm and smooth rendition. The tone on the guitar is like silk. Thanks for the trip.

I remember
actually recording this as the bar staff were stacking glasses ready for the crowd to arrive and it does add to the atmosphere I must agree. I wish I had the breath for those high notes today LOL. Really pleased you came along Phillip..... I'm almost sure the guitar was a blonde Gibson, of which Keith was very proud.... and as were the vocals, was played through my 'Sound City' Amp, with a 'Copycat Echo' unit for the vocals, thanks for dropping by, regards M

This is so great at this tempo and the simple arrangement. I love the clinking glasses and slight old tape wobble. Sounds a bit like a lost Elvis demo at times.

Very fine
performances from all herein: glad you could recover this gem from the past and re-vitalise it (I was 2 when you did this Maurice)- I actually like the occassional glass clink- adds to the authenticity and general ambience... love the harmonies and that style of guitar too.

Thanks Alan,
The glasses do add to the feel as well as the bit of feed back from Yvonne's mic LOL. If she wasn't spilling Coke into the amp, she would keep turning her cheap mic up and it would squeal ha ha,; caused so many arguments at the time. It was a good sound we had though, (not forgetting that this was a rehearsal and was the reason I was recording it), cheers M
