Description
not sure what exactly is going on here. I started writing a drum part, then began chopping out chunks to put effects on and writing counter rhythms on a marimba instrument and some other percussion instruments I put together. after that I put down the main keyboard part using Mike and Daves "Harmony Box;" which is a synth that lets you write harmonies and chords to follow whatever you play on the keyboard. I have no idea what chord I ended up using as I just kept twisting the knobs until it sounded interesting to me.

I put one deep bass part and another bass that just modulates every once in awhile. for vocals I used a sample I have of a girl singing, and I sang along with "her." on her voice I used a hall reverb setting but turned the reverb off abruptly as each of her notes ended (to make it sound very fake, and to give myself a chance to rip off Kraftwerk). My voice is distressed to death and I was going for a vocal sound that you might hear on an old Can record.

The whole "song" kind of reminds me of something that would accompany a visual. Not sure what I think of the synth solo in the middle, but couldn't think of anything else to go there. Originally I had written some lyrics about how under a capitalist system, the means of production dictate everything. you know, the whole false consciousness thing. Decided that writing a Marxist song was kind of cheesy and left it alone.

I don't know if this falls under rock? It's pretty groovy... soulful, electro jazz. It has a great groove ... like the repeating vocal bit and the cool synth over that funky drum ... I think at around 1:10 when the vocals stop and you head into that little synth part I would have turned it up a touch in the mix but thats all subjective isn't it. I really like the groove.

yup
i think I put it in alternative as I kind of felt it shared some common ground with artists like Stereolab. The solo section being too quiet was a real point of contention for me as well. I wasn't sure if it was drowning everything else out so I ended up lowering it, but I think you're right. thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Mike and Dave are really onto something
that main line sounds great - I like the thin synth lead - works really well in the mix. The cutoff reverb is a neat trick.

now that was different and unexpected. no melodies this time aside from bom bom. Impressed you know of Can! Got they're full collection. Best Can song ever: Moonshake

you have no idea how much I love Can. so multifaceted and even in my most pop moments I always feel their influence. moonshake is like the quintessential motoric groove, yet has that bossa nova feel over the top. genius. also love "she brings the rain."

Can, Stereolab, two of my favs. I see the connection. Very hipster-groovy trend shopping music in my book. Is that a genre? I actually LIKE the synth solo being at a lover volume, it makes it less piercing and somehow mysterious in a way. Thanks for the DL.

that synth sound can be pretty piercing (thus the low volume), but I really like the movement and it doesn't work the same if I chip away at the high end. you should get a job identifying (and consequently titling) youth movements. thanks so much for checking this out.

Synth sounded really full and organic. My personal preference would have been for the solo in the middle to be louder. Very cool. I checked out Can on ITunes and really liked them, gonna go see if they have a CD at any of the local shops.

actually this one wasn't completely thrown together (just the vocals and bass). I actually spent a bit of time programming the drums and percussion, and the solo (just because I kind of don't really crave "soloes" and I kept redoing it and trying to come up with a good sound). thanks so much for the kind words though, much appreciated.

this was definitely one of those "write it as you record it" pieces. keep telling myself I'm going to sit down and compose a song before I hit record, but that just takes too much time. thanks for the kind words.

we need a new music genre for this... something like electro-power-pop.

this strikes me as upbeat and melodic even though there isn't a true melody, if that makes any sense.. but it made me feel happy!

that's funny Vic. believe me I tried to write something a little more melodic, but that damn chord synth made it so hard to do anything (thus the repeating bass line). how about "electro powered jazzpop"?

decided that writing a marxist song was kind of cheesy and left it alone
Ha, that's funny dude. Do cyborgs dream of electric sheep? I don't know. Does terry eagleton dream of electric music? Anyway this is great, reminds me of the better thievery corporation stuff, that subtle lounge and latin influence. love the little synth melodies.

put any
well known band name instead of 'michael2' and i'd go 'wow, great new track'. glad you described a little bit about the process, since i would have otherwise asked for it - fascinating. fun, clean, carefree, unexpected and perfect for any experiemental/music video/art project/short film. wish there was a good website for independent filmmakers, where they could just listen to music like yours and contact the artist directly.

on par with the best tracks i heard from this particular genre. if there would be such a thing.

The deconstruction was as fun...
as the construction... Loved reading the story behind the music. I think you're right about this accompanying an abstract visual. You should talk to Drakonis about that, he's the man there... I wish I were free enough mentally to just go unusual places like this... it feels so liberating to visit them with others! This was an appealing, slightly goofy, and good fun trip!
