Put On Your Brave Face

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
so i found out that this has several different time signatures here when i started playing the drum parts on the midi keyboard. 2/4, 4/4, 5/4. usually i'm not counting these things out when i am working them out on the acoustic before recording.

i did the song art today at work when i had a moment of free time.

Lyrics
Put On Your Brave Face

i miss the laughs today
saw the smiles fade
(fade away)
silver bullets penetrate
(straight to)
straight to the heart
(how i miss)
how i miss the laughs today

put on your brave face (put on your brave face)
show them all you have what it takes
put on your brave face 9put on your brave face)
that is something they can't take away

i heard silence today
echoes from miles away
(you didn't say)
you didn't say a thing
(voices)
voices of ghosts today
(apparitions)
apparitions fade away

put on your brave face (put on your brave face)
show them all you have what it takes
put on your brave face 9put on your brave face)
that is something they can't take away

second vision second sight
it's clear as day and night
(they make plans)
they make plans behind closed doors
(stand up)
stand up and fight or flight
(second vision)
second vision second sight

put on your brave face (put on your brave face)
show them all you have what it takes
put on your brave face 9put on your brave face)
that is something they can't take away

Whoa...
Has anyone told you that you sound like Art Garfunkel? And yes, I mean that as a compliment! Love the fearless exploration of changing meters.. Kind of an old-meets-new sensibility, combining modern technique with old-school flourishes like the phase shifted guitar.. Solid playing throughout, I enjoyed your melodic approach to soloing a lot. Thanks!!

i chose to sing a bit on the falsetto side on this one, mostly to ride over the acoustics, since the range can get a bit to much in the same ballpark. when i work on a song i don't factor in time signatures i just go for figuring it's always 4/4. thanks for the listen

Another excellent edition

Put On Your Brave Face
That's something they can't take away. Wonderful lines Vic.

This has a very Beatles sound to it, maybe something they left off the Sargent Pepper album but had intended to put on it like. Very cool sounds Vic.

Face off!
Finally a song about putting a face on. Instead of having it rocked off! :)
Vic, I love your style man.
The crispy guitars and understated backing are a nice base fir what I think is a bit of a vocal show from yourself. Very cool vocals.
Ace solo and tasty flashes of lead.
Cool song
Vic Holman said 2225 days ago (June 24th, 2011)

face on......face off..........karate klaatu the unseen movie.

the lead has a kind of classical style seems to me, it was a second take and seemed to work well i thought

Very impressive piece that bridges the gap between alternative and progressive. As always, a wide range of quality guitar sounds. Very good production and mix!

Agree with Andrew on the alt progressive thing...This is like one of those cool deep track gems that you find on a well produced LP.

And it's really cool how Gort has evolved,,that 3D blue look suits him.

I have quite a few odd chord voicings in the verse and solo section so the progressive really comes out of that, at least i think it does

i like your music a lot - the time changes and the slightly exotic eastern vibe make for a fascinating listen. i dig your vocal delivery on this- smooth, airy, and fits the musical mood just right....swell job, this!

Beautiful shimmering acoustic tones on this. Really beautiful and clean. Like the openness and airiness of this one. Kind of a trippy Summer of Love feel to it.

The shifting time signatures and creative chord voicings turned out great! I agree with the others on the alt/prog combo. Overlapping vocals work well. The acoustic sounds fabulous. Great solo!

brave face
you've got the best sounding acoustic guitars on MJ. hands down. and that solo is sweet - i listened several times, and i love how it has it's own melody and concept apart from the tune yet the emotion is the same so it fits right in.

the acoustic really needs the strings to be replaced. it still sounded alright so i let it slip. originally i wasn't going to do a solo. since i had the guitar already plugged in for laying down a different part i thought i would jam over it for a time killer. this was the second take and i decided it was a keeper

Gort progresses
I dig the dark progression, the many sounds you chose and achieved with your layered guitars, and the shimmering brightness of the mix. The changing meter seems to catch you be surprise at times, when your vocals are slightly behind. I like the layered vocals when they line up, they create a very nice texture along with the fab guitars in there. Thanks for sharing this series.

i will need to revisit the vocals when i have distanced myself from the song. the more subtle guitar parts seem to be where i spent most time with. i would keep change ideas , effects, patterns but i think i actually ended up with what i originally had. isn't that the way
