Description
Once again, written a long time ago, but a fresh arrangement. For this one, I was struggling with a guitar solo so turned to a long time friend, Peter Thorneycroft, (we met as small children 58 years ago!) for some harmonica to change the sound. I am delighted with what he added to the mix! The drums are a simple pattern generated by Garageband on the iPad, with a few extra fills added by hand. Peter also plays the synthesiser that it all sits on (the sound is "Jazz organ" from Garageband).

One acoustic guitar strummed, the other finger-style with a capo on the 5th fret. A bit of electric for the lead line, a bass and that's it. No attempt at harmony vocal this time - just keeping the vocal simple.

My thanks to Thorn (Peter Thorneycroft) for what he added to this song - you gotta love that harmonica!

Key D | Harmonica Key G

The photo was taken at Monet's Garden at Giverny, France on a trip earlier this year. it's a beautiful place.

And to Peter Bowen (PeterB785) - get well soon and get back to MacJams!

Choices

I have not made the choices that have made my life
I have not been the singer of my songs
I have been the listener who laughed at love
But not at you, you are the choice I made.

I have been the silence taking us away
I have been the artist painting rhymes
I have not been the springtime in the winter chill
But I’ve been you, you are the evening’s still

Instrumental

I have played at many games and I have won
I have sung in sorrow of these times
I have been the living of so many dreams
I dream of you, you are the dream I made
I’ve been you, you are the choice I made.

IMO this is by far your best produced post so far. The harmonica grabs the listener right away. And the harmonica solo is wonderful. I love the texture added by the organ! Beautiful tune. I like the lyrics. Nice vocal performance. Maybe your best mix too!

Thanks
Much appreciated, Andrew. I'm certainly paying attention to everyone's comments on previous posts, as well as listening more critically myself, and I'm pleased that this is showing up in the mix. Having another musician help also adds a lot!

Best mix
Hi Philip. Finally got some decent Wifi access at the hospital. Andrew is right. This is by far your most ambitious, and best, mix. The harmonica comes across very nicely. You also did a good job on the IPad drums. Your vocals are relaxed and suit the song style. Well done to both you and Peter. Brightened up my night. Talk soon, Peter.

Glad you have finally got the hospital behaving the way you want them to! Much as I'd like to take the credit for the drums, I didn't do them. Thorn used the "Smart Drums" on the iPad, keeping it simple, then added a few fills later (using the quantize function so that they all kept to the beat). Glad you like the vocal. Look after yourself (if all those nurses don't) and I'll see you soon!

This is a fine song...
Great choice to bring in Peter's harp... I love the harmonica... and he's quite good. Mellow tune with lovely guitars - reflective lyrics that you sing convincingly.

Yes, the harmonica works! Thorn's a great player and a long-time friend, so it was good to spend some time working on this one with him. Glad you liked the guitars, too! I appreciate you listening and taking the time to comment.

Wonderful production and great tune. The harmonica works perfectly and the organ just adds a nice ambience underneath. Tasty little lead bits ... almost sounds like a volume pedal. And as usual your warm vocals make it all work. Excellent song.

Thanks
Much appreciated, Stan. It wasn't a volume pedal - and in fact I can't remember what sound it was - something from the Line 6 "Gearbox" suite. I may have to start writing down what sounds I end up using - i usually play around with a few before settling on one. And yes, I think I'll have to ask Thorn to add harmonica to a few more songs! Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Great choice!
Adding the harmonica! Love the classic major IV chord followed by the minor iv chord in the verses, makes me think of cats like Noel Coward, back in the day when songwriting was in its golden age... Very pleasing song, I think you made all the right choices here, with the solo vocal, the lack of over percussion; you set just the right mood!

Strong vocals, nice progression, I like the way the melody resolves over the last line of each verse. I like the harp fills, and solo. I like this line "I have been the silence taking us away". Nice mix.

Hi Philip
Love the harmonica! I think I'd nudge your voice up just a hair. That's the only nit I have. I like to hear the voices on top of the mix. There are places it gets hard to hear. I think mainly the lower parts in your melody. Some subtle compression might take care of that. Really this is a small thing and overall I really like this a lot! Thumbs up!

I appreciate the comments Freddy. I must look into the compression issue - at the moment I don't do much with that. It's something I need to get into, I think. Glad you like the harmonica! Thanks for listening and for the detailed comment!
