Description
I use to have a studio in a small city and most days I would see these two fella's walking the streets or asking for some change. They were a visual part of my life so much that if I didn't see them for a day or two I would wonder where they went. And when I saw them again everything felt complete. Now every street and town has one of these guys. They are part of the streets. I always wondered what their story was. What happened?

I approached this tune in a simple way just with my uke, blues harp and vocals. I used the two finger approach on the midi keys for the bass and drums trying to keep it slightly sloppy to give that in the room everyone playing feel. I could have picked away at the mix but I kept it pretty straight. I am always open for real criticism.

Uke blues!
Could be the first time I've ever heard blues uke. Way cool, really well done. Love the strong rhythmic sense, the drive. It's lightness makes the blues, which is often heavy and large, more transcendent. Really nice harmonica flourishes too. The vocals are fun, with a bit of a southern rockabilly sense of entertainment, which I also liked. My ears wanted a drum track with more personality and perhaps more EQ depth, cuz it sounded a little too light on an already light uke bed, altho the crash sounds just right (could've used more cymbal, and more judicious use of syncopation?); maybe some tom or a more old timey skin snare, and some more driving blues fills. Not sure. Really nice track.

Love the finger picking on the uke
it is an instrument that I have had for many years and neglected for the same time !! The recording of it is superd and it is obviously not a cheapo................Lynyrd Skynyrd references here are great (Saturday Night is special ...?)I loved the album One More From The Road and every single track on it (the original 70's one) This is a masterclass in nearly all the reasons why I should just pack this all in and get a new hobby !!!

Bad Luck
The uke is so out of control great and funky I can't stand it. The song would have be perfect of you even ended at 00:48! But it just kept getting better. The vocals were perfectly mixed, the uke stayed right up front - and a good thing, too cuz it's so damned excellent. I dig the roughness of it, the two finger bass, the rough drums. Oooh and a bit of falsetto. Bad Luck is out there. I'm having my share right now, but it can always get worse....But for the grace of God go I...

such a natural talent Stan..... such a great original way to start this song off with the uke playing what U thought was going to be entirely something different and then it fits in so perfectly with this wonderful Blues...... love the versatility of your voice and your talent. Oh, I LOVE your uke playing!!
I only have one comment about the mix, which is that the delightful uke is VERY upfront... everything else is blended very well; with a clear, but common space, and the uke is by itself; like you were watching the band from the sound board of the venue, and the uke player was playing right into your right ear... It is supremely funky and cool all around, and I agree heartily with your choice about the bass and drums, much more organic than sequencing it or something. If I were to take a whack at the mix, I'd be trying to settle the uke in more closely in the sound field with everything else. No nits at all about the playing, it's spot on. I envy the uke ability!

Brilliant
Love the way you have put this together. Blues uke is a first for me, too. Like the way this works in the 1st person, as if a profoundly sad man was trying to get some energy and optimism but laying down a really punchy, affirmative rhythm. Would have sounded wrong as a descriptive, third person piece.

Great track. Much enjoyed.

I want ...
... to give you the real criticism you desire but don't feel qualified from a technical perspective except to say it sounded very open, clean and proficient and the placing of instruments added to the width. It was a regular Blues song but it had some 'moments' like those long held vocal tremelo notes and the 'singing harmonica' Enjoyed the inspiration story too - A1 .... Serena

Ukes rule!
at least they do here. Top stuff Stan - classy vocals and uke playing - like the harp too. I agree with Tobin about the drums - getting Mike Watkins or Scott Fugate or Fred Jam on this would be great. It may even be worth giving it a run with the snare on the 3 rather than the 2 and 4 - might just lighten the drive, which sounds a little out of place against the uke here. I must get my uke out of the cupboard one day - have had it for years and never played it - it's time.
Very impressive post.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil
