Respite (1 synth challenge)

Description
here is my entry for the TAL Noisemaker one synth challenge. I was trying to do a sort of Midnight Cowboy meets Martin Denny sort of thing, with a little 60's soundtrack thing thrown in for good measure. I picture some interstellar travelers taking a little vacation on some far flung resort planet, and this is the music that's playing in the bar.

I really like this synth, it is a little cantankerous (unbelievably noisy delay/reverb section); but I use it a lot and always have fun with it. Looking forward to hearing everyone else's entry.

Hi Michael....
Great track with just that touch of sci-fi ambience in it to meet very well your description of where it's played.

All your work here paid off, as far as I'm concerned. Love the photo mantage.

Take care.

Paul

I love the range of tones you got from a single synth. That the same synth creating the various melodic sounds is also doing the syncopated kick drum sound is amazing to me.

thanks man. that synth is a pretty neat one, I really like the way you can draw in filters and stuff. they also make an expanded version of the filter section (also free) that you can apply to anything (sounds great on bass). thanks again for stopping by.

You nailed it according to the description
great exploration of the versatility of the tal. You manged to embrace the warm and cold sides of the synth and created a really complete track full of mystery and musicality. I especially like the Hawaiian guitar sound. That must have been challenging.

thanks man. this was a pretty easy challenge for me (nothing but fun). the hawaiin guitar part was a little weird to play because its basically a chord sound with some portamento and it was hard to figure out what notes to play to have them arrive at the right spot. really the biggest challenge was getting around not having EQ on any of the tracks.

geez louise michael! very cool - as a next version that's not limited to one synth, i'd love to hear your vox in here. i almost CAN hear it in fact. love this - thanks for the D/L!

thanks a bunch. I have a vocal line I wrote for it actually. maybe i'll reassign all the synth parts to other instruments and see what happens (although I'm working on my 57 second long Drum and Choir piece right now). thanks for stopping by.

thanks; glad you liked it. you should definitely check out the synth (and their delays, filter2, reverb2, and the elec7ro synth). they make really nice stuff and I don't know why the guy doesn't sell it.

amazing work...
... as usual! i get that the challenge is limited to one synth, and you have put together an amazingly rich composition here. i would love to hear your vocals on top of this one... maybe a second version down the road?

mmm
love Grandaddy. that whole lo-fi indie space rock with melody thing was really appealing to me. their guitar player is now in the Radar Brothers (one of my all time fave bands who do a sort of lo-fi Pink Floyd meets Abbey Road thing).

cinematic indeed, this could be a sci-fi love scene of galactic proportions. I see pink flamingos on the lunar lawn, heavy water sprinklers, and zero-gravity lovers floating by holding... uh... hands probably.

Great vibrato sounds and nice mood
I love the spacey "waaaah" in the beginning in particular. I agree on the synth delay/reverb. It has its pros and cons but it was fun to use. You got some very unique sounds out of it. Did you use presets in the vibrato sounds or just go wild with LFO? It works very well and I look forward to hearing vocals!

Nice___
This is really nice michael2. You managed to find some really cool and soft patches that I like and would work well in my Downtempo tunes. (can you say inspiring?) I am very much on my way to check this synth out. Great job.

Enjoyed - Thanks for sharing,

Weird Electronica
Someone mentioned Radiohead...very much along those lines with the syncopated bass drum and the little purely electronic touches in there. Really cool.
