Description
Hard to select a genre on this one. Ballad, dark-psychedelic fantasy, happy pop? No matter, we had fun doing it. skunk2 did backing vocals, harmonies and played the bottle. skunk1 did most of the playing or selecting of the musical accompaniment, main vocal, backing vocals, weird vocals and production. Thanks for listening. Comments and constructive criticism always welcome. At skunkwrx we try to question the status quo, so we probably meant to do it that way...

The song was released in another form as "In The Stone" at an earlier date.

Brick & Timber

Built a perfect world around my heart
But then every brick and timber falls apart
Tried to find a shelter from the rain
But then every hope and dream comes down again

Drag your shell into the sunshine
Hang yourself out for a lifeline
Memories fade over a lifetime
Move yourself into the sun

Try to find a home in a new land
And then steel myself to make a final stand
Build me up and make me matter make me whole again

Drag your shell into the sunshine
Hang yourself out for a lifeline
Memories fade over a lifetime
Move yourself into the sun

oh yeah this is outstanding. i thought it was a bit derivative at the beginning, but that second section with the harmony and everything else is truly sensational. you sound like the beatles and beachboys and other good things. i can't believe how good this is - it coulda bin.....ohhhhh it coulda bin me. i gotta check the rest of your stuff to see if you're just a one hit wonder.

I think everything in music is at least a little bit derivative. We tried to break it up and give a different flavor to the various sections, driving them apart. Glad you liked it. Hopefully we survive the one hit wonder test. Trying.

So excellent! Such an original tune! Just a killer arrangement. So much going on but it all work together and makes perfect sense. I love the chorus! And the bass line is awesome! This is a must download!

I have to thank skunk2 for the chorus. It started with that and everything got riffed off it and built on top of it. I thought it kind of luscious, too. Happy to have your ears on it Alack.

Not quite a legend yet I don't think, but working on it. This one was a long time in the making and had another life before coming to existence as "Brick & Timber". But it stands on it's own hopefully. Loved "Crystal (Sisters)" totally top notch, now that was legendary...

From one designer/art director to another, I have always loved the push and pull of genres and the flexibility the digital world has brought to music creation and production. From someone as accomplished as you, and one who's work I really admire in your song craft and production chops, a high compliment. We thank you.

Loved "Blind Love" a very inspirational an totally gorgeous piece of music. We had been a team for some time now, and as those things go have found a groove in our methods of working together - which we try to re-invent -and break apart - as much as we can. Thanks for dropping in Karen, and for not dropping names...LOL...;-)

Thanks Mo. Loved Danny Boy. You had some bottles clinking in that one, too as I remember...;-P We appreciate the praise on the vocals coming from a man with golden pipes. You are a man of many genres and I am very inspired by how your listening habits range so far outside your own genre. I try to do the same. The beauty of MJ, I think is that mind expansion, and openness to all the musical world has to offer.

Beyond My Reach
The base line reminds me of a Tony Levin tune you might like: Beyond My Reach. The bass lost some of its hoped for resonance when the whole band kicked in, in my speakers. I liked the retro feel, like The Byrds, early folk rock. Cool effects and shifts in instrumentation and texture. The crowd sounds and feel give the whole thing a kind of loose, aimless feel that didn't go with the lyrics, for me. But I dug it. nonetheless.

Great Comment!
I know what you mean about the disconnect in there. My vocals started with that chorus, and for a long time that's all that was added to the original sound bed. I really wanted to write another chorus with different words to establish a change in outlook through the song, to imply a character who has allowed his life to become limited and then forces himself to come into 'the sunshine'. That was also the motivation for adding that barroom chatter and the blown bottles. But I was having so much trouble with additional lyrics and a good melody line, I sent it back to Skunk1 to see if he could break it open. What he added was such a strange mash-up of psychedelic parts, I was happy to go with what we now have. It doesn't make much sense, but I think it's an OK listen anyway!

Thank you for the careful listen, Tobin,

Skunk2

harmonious...
Love it when the harmonies come in, really lifts it. The singing sounded slightly out of tune in the first part of the song to my ears, but perhaps that's the psychedelic style. All in all, a great little song. I like the choppy glam rock guitar riff especially.

Smooth production and arrangement. I dig the harmonies and trippy effects. Reminds me of Matthew Sweet on acid. Very cool

you have your own style, one of the most unique rock mp3s I've heard on Macjams. The chorus really transcended, loved it! This music is modern yet it properly brings melodic hooks back from the dead.

weird is good
I'm enjoying the creative sound manipulation in this. Without that it would have been a decent rock song, the occasional weirdness lifts it just a notch higher on the appreciation scale.

Brick & Timber
A really big sound. Cool crunchy guitars contrast well with the muddy bass. The vocal arrangement in the chorus is great. Strong vocals overall. Good imagery in the lyric hints at inner turmoil.
