Motor Head (with Paul F. Page and Sisters)

Description
I was reluctant to post this without doing a whole set of reviews as I seem to have been away for a while but I've been persuaded to post and then review! Apologies to all and I'll get as many done as I can over the weekend.

Motorhead, Paul Page, Sisters? Surely shome mishtake?. MInd you I didn't actually tell them the name of the song :-) Many, many thanks to Paul and Anne for their contributions, help and advice.

Our last offering, Signals, was about my childhood and this is Richard's story.

Richard says "The soundtrack to my teens, growing up in a small mining village in South Yorkshire, was played by Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and – of course – Motorhead. But even that sort of volume couldn’t block out the sound of my dad and stepmother’s constant rowing

I first heard Van Halen when Ain’t Talking ‘Bout Love was played over the PA before a Black Sabbath concert in Leeds. Eddie’s guitar and Dave’s vocals sounded like glamour and fun and sunshine. A welcome respite from all that metal screaming".

The piano is played by Paul F Page. I happened to be in an email conversation with him about motorcycles and pipe organs when the song was being written and wondered if he'd play some piano. I knew it was outside what he'd normally do (and probably a bit simple for him ;-) ). The piece he gave me was uncharacteristically sparse and it changed the way I saw the song and I reworked the music to fit around the piano. Anne once again provided some lovely harmonies.

I played everything, except the piano and Richard wrote most of the melodies as well as all of the lyrics.

Motor Head © Richard Marris, Dick Langford 2011

Tonight, they're shouting again
They always stop
But we never know when
But I've got this C90 t-a-a-pe
It's time for a six string escape

Eddie's pouring California sun
Into my motor head
Eddie's pouring California sun

British steel everywhere in this town
Grinds the carbon up
Winds the men down
But in my ears a golden party sound
(now) all I need is you to come around

Eddie's pouring California sun
Into my motor head
Eddie's pouring California sun

I ain't talkin' 'bout the west coast girls
I like the girl I've got right here
All I need is your golden curls
Eddie's six strings and some beer

You don't need much, when you live in your head
Go anywhere from right here in my bed
Leave behind the sound of metal screaming
Heading for some California dreaming

Eddie's pouring California sun
Into my motor head
Eddie's pouring California sun

Ooooo!
That was quite an arrangement enhanced by the excellent piano and the plucked strings. Some great changes in pace and style. I wasn't really aware of a female vocal, very subtle and the lead singer did seen to be battling a cold "Botor head" :) but that wasn't a problem that spoiled my enjoyment. Good work guys :) Serena

Between Richards lyrics,
your vocals and music, Paul's piano and Anne's harmonies, you've somehow come up with a beautifully orchestrated, magnificently arranged, and wonderfully fresh masterpiece my friend.

Kudos to you all. I love this piece which will be going onto my iPod and in rotation so I can hear it again and often.

Thanks for the D/L, Dick this really is masterful.

They're becoming a sort of common feature around here.

Thanks for the listen and comments Karen. Although Paul didn't realise at the time he drove the final sound and shape of the song with his original piano piece.

WOW!
Hi Dick. I wasn't sure what I was likely to get given the title and the collab artists but WOW! As Andrew says, this is BRILLIANT! I just love the sentiment and the piano and the harmonies and... just everything about the song. Kudos to all concerned. Auto D/L and it will get played a lot. Thanks, Peter.

Thanks for the comments. It's mostly down to Richard who wrote the thing in the first place but I don't think he had any idea it would end up like this.

Top flight track
Dick, your emotional vocal here has taken your traditional high quality work up a few notches. Of course the care in the orchestration (that was well handled on so many fronts, such as the understated bass, tympani and pizz strings, for example) and the seamless backing by Anne and Paul help set the stage, but the star is still the vocal performance and the feelings conveyed so intimately by the lyrics.

Thanks for the download sir. A fine piece. Congratulations all 'round.

Thanks again.

well done!
what i really like most is the QUIET quality to this piece.
the bass and piano set up at the start are the perfect combo.
you sing like it's so effortless - how do you do that, Dick?
wonderful percussion flourishes - and your staccato strings send me.
we background singers sometimes focus on our parts until they make no sense. on Neil Porter's BLUE POOL, those 2 words were all I had to sing, but they would quickly turn into BOO PLOO if I didn't pay attention. 8( same here = I soon had Eddie pouring "California oil into my motor home" - my apologies, Richard!
thank you for letting me be part of this, gentlemen,
anne

1-2-3.....i love a count in. cool lyrics...eddie's pouring etc. this is a great song...the piano and orchestration really contrasts nicely against the simple vocal deliveries. for some reason, it reminded me of 'i don't like mondays'.....watch out dick....before you know it you'll be saving the planet. love the section where you double your vocals and get up into your higher register....you do it really well. great mix...everything crystal. great job by all.

Takes me back
the same soundtracks as mine. This was very enjoyable on many levels, it sets the perfect scene for those days. The story line is also very real, cleverly sculpted words helps bring it on home. I saw Van Halen support Black Sabbath and they blew them off stage,I had never seen or heard anything quite like it before. So, Eddie's pouring California sun

I can relate to this story...
....I grew up in much the same circumstances in Michigan. Music was my escape from the chaos around me. For me it was Yes, Zeppelin, The Beatles, Roxy Music, Jethro Tull, but the intent was the same - drown-out the chaos. Beautiful orchestration and harmony vocals here. Quite a juxtaposition between the chord choices and the subject matter. Makes me wonder what this would sound like with a more major treatment and some guitars. Thanks!
