Description
Quite some time ago ... Blaine Transue did a little blues jam .... I did a little jam of my own called Crushed Angel with it ... I was feeling a little nostalgic and melancholy tonight and thought I might just like to sing it again ... this is just a simple one take version ... I just like the tune .... so here it is (warts and all) ....

Lyrics
You won’t let me be
all that I can be
Let me spread my wings
fly and be free
Let me shine and bestow upon you
all the gifts that are me

Don’t put a brown sack
over my head
you cover my smile
and dim my brilliant light
An angel in a plain brown wrapper
oh what a sight

There’s magic in this soul
it can mend and repair
the scars of all hurts
sadness and despair

Please don’t bind my wings
with a string so tight
it crushes my riches
my gifts of light
My wings must be spread
so that I may take flight
fly and be free
once again shine bright

You can come with me
I’ll show you the way
Don’t be afraid
I won’t lead you astray
Don’t welcome the devil
when he comes through your door
and cast out the angels
who can offer you more
she’ll fight for you - and die for you
that angel is me

Warts and all?
I have never heard that before.
Some sultry blues. Love it. One take tracks sometimes say more than major productions. This speeks volumes. Class act all the way. Thanks, Enjoyed big time...

Thanks Mowguy ....
You've never heard the phrase "Warts and All"?

Q. ‘Warts and All….How did this phrase originate?

A. Down through the centuries, portrait painters would often soften their subject’s facial features by removing blemishes , lines and wrinkles from their work, and the end result would most definitely be flattering. But when Oliver Cromwell himself commissioned Sir Peter Lely to paint his portrait, he instructed the artist; ‘I desire you would use all your skill to paint my picture truly like me, and not flatter me at all, but remark all these roughness, pimples warts and everything as you see me.’ The finished portrait clearly shows a large wart, just below Cromwell’s lower lip. So the phrase means that to ask for something ‘warts and all’ is to require that no attempt be made to cover up any defects or hide unsavoury details

Alannah -this is a great way to hear what you've got. Minimal music and your maximum bluesy voice is the way to go, girl. I really like how this goes down the ear. 8) Anne

... yes my recent foray into some of the more experimental genres has left some folks wondering just who the heck I am really musically .... at heart I am a "crooner" .... but enjoy the challenge of mixing it up once in a while just to taste it all !

Crushed Angel REMIX
"Crushed Angel" is a good title, and the lyric develops the theme well. Your voice lends itself to a gritty, soulful blues like this one.
Nice work!

.. the lyrics themselves were originally written as a poem (and it was longer) ... but here and there I have used some of the poem words and turned them into song lyrics .... thanks for the listen!

Crushed Angel
Great warts! Lots of feel in your voice. Works well with the simplicity of the bluesy acoustic guitars. You can sing for me anytime!

... yes I was thinking of returning to my simplier vocal style roots and perhaps give the (um ... metal?) a rest for a bit ... I have been listening to a lot of acoustic versions of great tunes lately and it got me all in the less is more feeling myself ....

Soul/blues nuances...
Hi Alannah. Your vocal work here is just terrific. You develop some real soul/blues nuances and the echo effect suits the sparse arrangement. The guitar sits really nicely in the mix as well. Auto D/L. Thanks, Peter.

Unfortunately I still feel a little too naked without my REVERB ! So it will likely always be a mainstay in anything I record .... well at least until I get a better handle on using other FX and mixing tools ..... I really have not played around much with the settings ... want to try and get some DirectX stuff ... but most of it seems to be VST and doesn't jive with my (windoze) environment .... one of these days I will actually USE that MAC I have to mix music ! Still a little mac-shy ....

Sparse
.. and lovely. That stripped down feel really works for you, puts your voice centre stage and lets it own the song. Very effective.

Blues rebirthed
Alannah, love this new version of our old song. Astounding how your beautiful voice makes my sub par guitar sound, well...good, actually. You keep doing this, I may have to play you something else in the middle of the night. Got my studio back...got scotch, now just need to drum up a little talent and some nerve! Nice work, and thank you!

Lovely voice that puts an extra layer of meaning into the words. The guitar playing works perfectly with the vocal style, too. Much enjoyed!
