Description
We start out so young and innocent and then . . . sh#$#@t happens! I'm waiting for the "Do It Over Time Machine" so I can do it right. Is that a dream or a nightmare? Would fate just have something else go wrong? Expectations rarely meet reality. I guess I am just lost . . . wait the song already says this. Why am I saying it again?

On a technical note, this is one of my earliest posts that I have tried to re-edit and make better. Deleted all the electronic tracks and got it down to basics, me and the guitars. Then tried a bunch of effects to bring my voice down some. It was recorded way too hot. I don't even remember how it happened but when I went back to the GB file I found that the vocal, fingerpicked guitar and lead guitars were all on one track. Sp they were bounced on some stand alone machine at some time in the distant past and I didn't even remember doing it. So no balancing the sound levels on those tracks. But using a lot of equalizer I think I did make it somewhat better.

Lyrics
When you're born into this life, you start to cry
But you don't lie
A brand new thing of innocence and no one knows
Just when it goes
Then you're life starts changing so fast
With deadlines that just can't wait
Before you even realize
You're just lost in the American Dream

The things we do to each other
Are bad, so sad
The way we treat each other
It's a shame, who is to blame
We tried to solve the mystery
Of living in harmony
But the only thing we managed to find
Is we're just lost in the American Dream

Lyrics
Thanks Russ! I try to write all kinds of songs but it is the ones with the good lyrics that I am most proud of. I know you can relate to that.

Cool...
A lot of pain in the lyric, a lot of forthright honesty in the delivery. Enjoyed your picking a lot, thanks for the poignant moment!

Honesty
Thanks Phil! Paul Simon had a line in a song that went something like there is no tenderness beneath your honesty. I hope that's not true of me but I do seem to write lyrics every once in a while that are pretty harsh. As for the picking, this is as close as I get to your favorite jazz. Being an old folky, blues guy I was proud that this had Major 6ths, major 7ths, as well as the usual three chords and relative minor. Appreciate that you could find some worth in this, as rough as it was.

I really
liked the vocal delivery but I enjoyed the multii-tracked guitar too. Around 02:18 I would have cut the "just" to make it less rushed on the delivery...and I wouldn't wait for that time-machine Tom (you'ld have come back by now to say ;o)) Enjoyed.

Thanks Alan!
Good suggestion about the use of just. Leaner and meaner as they say. And about the time machine, what if it caused a split in the time streams and nothing changed in this one but I am living a whole different life in another one. Sorry, heheheh, too many science fiction books.

Solving the Mystery
Thanks Karen, this is one of those that I can't take too much credit for. It just appeared in my head one day and I wrote it down and recorded it. Don't know where it came from but grateful to whoever sent it.

Well balanced...
Hi Tom. The vocals came up well with your ministrations. It is well balanced in the mix and the whole project has a live feel. Some slight timing issues don't detract from that. Thanks for the post. Take care, Peter.

Thanks Peter
I almost understand Garageband enough after all this time to at least be able to twist the knob on some of the effects and know what they can do. That timing thing and doing drum tracks - don't think I'll ever get that one going.

good one...
Bronco, this reaches back and captures something of those tunes that I remember from the sixties/seventies. Great vocal and guitars... and I dig the lyrics. Well done, bro...

Influences
The big D better known as Jack. Yes I hear a lot of my influences in this one. A little soul music in the vocal, Van Morrison and Springsteen in the lyrics, And maybe the guitar playing from some Jesse Collin Young or Bonnie Raitt albums.

To Dream
Well I was halfway kidding about the depression comment but I thank you for the support. Maybe it's not that we are too happy but that a lot of folks are fiddling while Rome burns. Of course that is what happens when you go the empire route. As for the national anthem, can't really see folks singing this as we raise the flag but stranger things have probably happened . . . just not sure where! Heheheh!

hey
I was in a foul mood when I wrote this but some of it rings true.
Your right about raising a flag to a depressing song...just wouldn't be right, but there is certainly room for change in our land.
PEACE DUDE

If I get the writing and guitars together it is probably going to be one of my better ones as that's about as far as my talents go.

Nice Re Mix Tom
You know a great tune when it stands the test of time. I really enjoyed your original ... I really do like the balance of this one. Five years from now this will still be a great tune. Good one Tom.

Time goes by fast
Thanks Jack! That was a very nice complement. I personally thought this was one of my better songs but it didn't get much response the first time around. Of course it was a pretty awful production and recording which is why I decided to give it another go.

...and sadly, so very true for the most part. I think the guitar bridge (well done!) helped greatly to give us time to reflect think about what you said in your lyrics and also gave the sense of elapsing time. Fine work here...you bring us very good work every time it seems. Michael

See my remarks to Karen for some refinement of that good work description. Honestly some of these songs I put a lot of work into but some of them just float out of the ether while I am fooling around on guitar and I write them down. Twenty or thirty minutes and you are done. The recordings are almost always first take unless I mess up quite a lot. So you see, I try to keep the work aspect to a minimum and am quite lazy, hehe.

The gentle touch on the guitar is a nice contrast to the stark lyrics...Enjoyed the listen.
