Description
I love old rick springfield tunes, like hard to hold and love somebody. They've got a great power chord pop rock vibe, the kind of song that would make the girls swoon at the talent show even though you only know 4 chords. And he always had those sing along choruses...writing this i'm remembering a girl with big hair and bangle earrings singing along next to me to Love Somebody in the car like it was yesterday. Those tunes were sensitive love songs and balls out rockers all at the same time. Anyway thanks to my rick springfield pandora channel (HA! makes me laugh just to write that) i've had those kinds of tunes on my mind so this is the tempie version. Lyrically, I tried to do that same romance/punk rock tightrope walk, just enough hope and innocence, just enough cynicism. That pretty much sums of my world view anyway.

Lyrics
what do you say
nothing to do round here anyway
maybe me and you, well, you know
we been friends since grade school
pretty soon
won't be nothing to ruin
we'll get old
and we'll sell our soul

so lets just agree not to hurt each other too bad

just something to think about
lets climb on down from this tree house
wet a friendly line
down at the stock tank one last time
then i'll drop you home
do your hair and put a dress on
i'll pick you up
we'll try our luck

lets just agree not to hurt each other too bad

I think this is much more adventurous and has more punk legitimacy than any of Rick's power pop. Were it not for the detuned bass I would say this reminds me more of the kind of thing that came from the original new wave bands of the late 70s.

Your description reminds me I need a Loverboy Pandora channel.

of course i have a loverboy channel!
actually, i added loverboy to my 38 special channel, but same difference. i saw the love somebody video a couple weeks ago for the first time since the original release and i was shocked at how skinny he was. and the girls loved him! must be the hair and the guitar. if you've got the hair and the telecaster i guess it doesn't matter what's in between.

Deceptively simple
Dude this is great on so many levels. It has 70's AM radio all over it in true Tempie style, but yet again your new production skills give it edge. That detuned bass is killer and I'm loving the drum arrangement. Very strong composition and a guaranteed d/l for the car/iPod.

and i'm deceptively simple minded
my single goal for any tempie tune is that it sounds good in a trans am. and if you don't own a trans am, it will fill the car you're driving with trans am attitude. like one of those tree air fresheners, only the scent is burt reynolds and sally fields.

I love the chorus - excellent line
I was never a Springfield fan - if his music sound like this I would have really dug it though. The Tempie touch is magic. Great guitar tones and just enough punk attitude to curdle the sweetness. That's how I like it.

what?
a guy who played at CBGB's in the 80's doesn't think much of an 80's heartthrob soap star turned bubble gum popper? now way! ha, i didn't expect much sympathy from the crowd re the positive attributes of richard springthorpe. but i've got two words for y'all: jessie's girl. you can't deny that brother!

Craig love the guitar heavy tune you posted here. Really do enjoy the crazy guitar thing at 1:42-end.

Very well done indeed.

i really like dumping d&b or jungle/hip hop bass sounds into these rock tunes, just bits of what might otherwise be a groove, try to recreate the groove using negative space. glad you liked it man thanks for the listen.

If Gang of Four were Rick Springfield's backup band, he might have done something this good... Your greatest hits package is getting up into triple album territory... I'm picturing a flaming dragster on the gatefold.
Really like the drum part (is that a "flam" on the snare hits? sounds ridiculously cool.) the vocal sound also great. ditto for the guitar solo.
I agree that Jessie's girl is a great song, but you will never, EVER get me to sit through a Loverboy song (the antichrists of my adolescent musical universe ) :)

come on, working for the weekend??!!
definitely a vintage alcohol rail dragster. and the cd's will be printed with front and back tires. so i need four. which means a few more greatest hits to go. funny when i did the guitar part i was sticking with the rick springfield concept but i'd just come off a week of playing fugazi all day in the office every day. so there's a lot of that angular stuff in there. there is a little effect on the snare - i wanted a really crisp mix but with a bit of rockabilly and that 70's new wave 'acoustic music trying to be slick and modern' feel, kind of like the musical equivalent of a pontiac superbird, if that makes any sense.

I dig this. Seventies over eighties but all channeled through your omniverse....'down at the stock tank one last time" What does that even mean? I don't care...I'm along for the ride.

the meaning of tempie
omniverse. I like that. if an omnivore will eat pretty much anything, is an omniverse a place where you're up for pretty much anything? because i can live there. 'wet a friendly line/down at the stock tank one last time'. that's a pretty way to say 'go fishing at the cow pond'. Because they're friends, and they've always hung out, but they're getting past the kids thing and they're thinking that maybe there's more to this girl and boy deal. glad you liked the song man thanks for dropping by

Edgy energy. Throbbing bass, sinewy guitar lines support a cynical lyric. Cool tune, but does not remind me of Rick Springfield.

First I was struck by that deep bass end excellent crunchy chordal guitar panned to the right.Actually the clean guitar sound to the left is pretty cool too ... oh wait , now there's more at around 1:26 ... nice playing. Vocals are distinctive in the mix ... good delivery of the lyrics(lets just agree not to hurt each other too bad) I like that. This is a driving tune and it rocks. Good stuff!!

Geez Craig! This is a real head bobber. That's a good thing. In fact I'm typing to the beat.
I don't believe that has ever happened before. :D

Cool song. I love the weird transition that happens at about 1:20 or so. That's really cool.

This song reminds me of I Mother Earth a bit for some reason. Don't ask me why. It's probably just the guitar work.

Good stuff.

I wish that I had Jesse's girl! Sorry, I just HAD to do it. Gotta love Rick, is he still doing soap operas?

Great stuff, you have a way of always writing catchy choruses that get stuck in my head. Not a bad thing! Awesome tune.

i'll admit
I can get into some Springfield, but this is waay cooler. if i were to make a comparison to something else, I don't think I would be able to. strange mix of elements, and they all work together beautifully. whenever I hear your music, I feel like I just bought a single off you at one of your all ages gigs, and I'm listening to it at 3 in the morning after I got home. maybe I'll have another bowl of cereal and listen to that song again.

all ages show
man i really miss those shows. that's a unique thing, you get to do that for only a couple years before you've got a fake ID and it's not cool anymore. what a great vibe, feeling like you're on the edge of this incredible, indescribable possibility. life is wide open, and frankie goes to hollywood is singing an unbelievably adult song and your girlfriend's mom just dropped her off and you've got moves man, you know you do, like nobody else.
