Description
I got a new toy--an Octave mandolin-- a tenor uke strung with guitar strings and tuned like a mandolin only an octave lower. So messing around on it, this tune popped out. A Latin instrumental groove.

I thought it could use some bass and I immediately thought of Macjams resident groove-meister Llarion (Phil Traynor). Phil not only put an awesome bass track down, he added guitar and percussion and then volunteered to mix the track. All done in record time. The guy is amazing. I really admire his consumate musicianship, producing chops, and wise & generous spirit. Thanks, Phil!

John W: composition, rhythm & lead octave mandolin, guitar
Llarion: Bass, guitar, congas, shaker, triangle, & MIX

I had such an AMAZING time with this!
I listened to about three seconds of the track John provided, and immediately know I was in for a long night... Once I get my teeth into something like this, I just can't stop till it's done... :) I was swept away by the romantic, passionate melody, and John's effortless style. The song and its structure, and just what to play on the bass came so naturally to me, it was as if I'd written it myself, though I don't write with anything approaching this passion... To clarify the guitar thing, I only have one of the five guitar parts in here; it's the semi-hidden strumming part just to the left of center. John is all the other brilliant stuff. I couldn't hope to play like that. Thanks for letting me play in your sandbox, John; it was a wonderful experience, and it is a marvelous tune!!!

Dude: your bass part is so musical and funky. Beyond great comments here, I've had lots of comments from local music friends on how cool the bass, percussion and mix sound. Your collab exemplifies the best this site has to offer. I'm proud of this track and you're a big reason why!

Authentic...
Hi John and Phil. Congratulations on a wonderful instrumental. I don't think I have ever heard an Octave mandolin before. Love its timbre. Phil's bass track is so sympathetic to the lead and the added embellishments adds an authentic feel to the song. Much enjoyed. Thanks for the D/L. Take care both of you, Peter.

Very, Very Nicely Done.....
A standard Latin melody with a real nice feel makes for a great tune....
The uke really gave it that authentic, somewhere south of the border
feel, not an easy thing to do.....
The tones of the guitars have to be just right, nice playing cool project...I think this is what it is .....REAL GOOD......

Well done by you both.....

flamboyant birds of a feather
Your two talented parts fit together perfectly here and whip up a really tasty Spanish dish. John, your music and playing are always lovely, and on a new instrument too! You picked the right man to Phil in, Mr. Traynor spiced it to perfection... sounds great to me, even with the triangle banging in my right ear :-) Has a little "Strunz & Farah" vibe.

Really nice tone
This is a really nice combination of instruments. Very pleasant and pleasing. There is a lack of rhythmic precision at times, especially in the lead mandolin, a certain tightness in the strings overall, that I wanted to hear throughout. It happens to me all the time when I'm not recording to a click track or with a percussion player. But isn't it great when something just comes out like this? I love how new sounds inspire. Very cool mellow tone. I'm looking forward to more.

Oh yeah
This is nice. What a wonderful acoustic piece. It has a definite Latin sound to it, I might even add that it has a Brazilian Choro vibe. Is that Traynor as in Traynor amps? Great collab. Enjoyed!

Relaxing
I need more of this and a big sangria. Excellent in every respect guys. Amazing toy and how you play with it John. Although at times I felt the percussion was more than accompanying (perhaps because I'm listening with headphones), I absolutely enjoyed the track.

Nice bomp and lilt....
It's an infectious rhythm and an infectious melody. The bass, guitars and various mandolinish bits intertwine very neatly....All sits nicely in the groove.... A really nice collab, guys....

I've been singing and playing since the age of fourteen when my brother Paul was working his way through the Beatle book and needed someone to play with. From Paul I learned to fingerpick, play barre chords, and to sing the melody while he sang harmo... [see more]
