Don't count me out (just yet)

Description
A short "idea" (not a song as yet) I thought I'd share what I had so far: this started as my second Roland TD-9K (drum kit) recording experiment, this time recording midi from the kit (using GB own "Roadhouse kit") then touching up the timing etc with the pencil afterwards.

Hopefully a raunchy little upbeat (146 BPM) rock number that imo ended up sounding if I'd drawn influences from The Eagles of Death Metal, Royal Republic, The White Stripes, Motley Crüe and Led Zep and others too I'm sure...

Enjoy!

Lyrics
Don't count me out little sister,
Just count me in.
With a 1,2,3 I can't miss ya,
An' I'll know where to begin.

Don't
Count me out! [just yet]
D'D'D'Don't
Count me out!
Count me in.

I know I'll correct
The times of neglect
That had hurt you deep inside.
Yes I will...

But that's the nearest,
My dearest,
I will take you for a ride.
oooo

But there is no doubt,
I won't be knocked out.
By anything thing you claim.

An' if you wrestle,
with this vessel
It can only end in pain.

I love the big power chords at the start. Great retro hard rock riffage!

Thanks Andrew
Intros, Chorus' and verses I find easier..but bridges always seem to take me ages...but I have some new ideas to try out for this. It served it's prime purpose however: drum recording.

I think your right about the kick and bass: the bass I noticed sounded better in the mix prior to vocals being added, so I can go back and see how I managed to screw that up.. the kick kinda it more dynamic (I didn't change any hit velocities from the original Roland TD-9K midi input as yet) - was trying to leave some dynamic in the drums really..but perhaps I should even out the kick velocities (easy done). Cheers.

Thanks Tim
fairly standard riffage- I did like how the bass & guitars played the same then separated and the little fast shuffles on the rhythm guitar in the verses...of course if this makes it to song length, I will have to tackle a slot for an outrageous guitar solo...eek. lol.

Sorry to hear your arthritis hinders your own dexterity these days- still, it doesn't stop you writing a good tune. If anyones reading this they should check out Maurice's "Every Time" (http://www.macjams.com/song/69063)

Really good song, love the 80s sounds well done
apb said 2170 days ago (July 18th, 2011)
Thanks Neil
..not quite a finished song per se.. but I'll get there with some advice I'm sure. Must admit I was trying for that slightly more modern than 80s but still retro sound of some of the bands I mentioned above.. but even those always have even some 70s, 80s and 90s elements too.

love it
totally down my alley. i recommend you 'pop' it up - bubble gum backups, some cowbell, handclaps on the off beat. i only recommend that because i think that's your thing, based on your other tunes, and i have a hunch this would sound even cooler if you had more fun with it. just my two cents. as is, i dig it.

Thanks Craig
I think your definitely on to something: cowbell could really work where I currently have some ride cymbal hits during the riffage sections.. and since posting I can hear some simple "oo/ah" style backing (particularly in the transition between chorus & verse). Thanks for the tip bud. Handclaps I might try: perhaps a little more spareingly eg. in a return/break-down section later in the arrangement??.. might work as well.

More cowbell!! Is actually a pretty good idea I think (see above). :o) I had just realised I had no "Rock" number on this (the final) song in my "album" "Living beyond your wildest means" .. and it was high-time I rectified that fact, before people forget what is my main musical affiliations.

Glad you enjoyed these if brief effort. Yup, would be fun to play live- might have trouble with the vocals though...they took a fair number of takes to be honest.

Don't count me out
I like the heavy guitars. Cool where the vocals slip up into the higher register. It'll be interesting to hear how this develops

Glad you mentioned the vocals: perhaps the first! They were by far the hardest.. I think this key (Bb) was "ok" and pushed me but also gave me some room to maneouvre... but basically it's that kinda pitch you just have to imagine having a fit live to sing.. lol. I will try and complete this... it's on my to-do-list..
