Song Description

for the World Listening Project

location: this is a suburban neighborhood - Monday morning 9:20 or so

sounds: rumble of interstate 495 which is about 1.5 miles away, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, cars driving by, a few bird calls

i filtered out some of the low end using a simple high pass filter

Sometimes it's good to just stop
and be quiet for a time. The world is an amazing place and quiet time lets you absorb that if you'll just "Listen"

Very nice piece Bill. Thanks for making me pause for a time and just listen.

.
minimal process: 1. recorded sounds outside. as is, except fade-in, fade-out, and a little filtering to remove the low-end rumble of the highway traffic
2. while replaying the recording, improvised on the piano. minor tweaks to velocity and a few wrong notes. i tried to leave it as light as possible

thanks

Atmospheric Bill
very atmospheric..... there's just something I find very touching about the simple piano against the sound of man's rushing around in this world.... you're a bit of an expert in defining moods and situations with sound/ music.... and this works very well.... the bird's 'cheep' at the end was great, cheers M

Listening
Your keywork is awesome. Such a light touch conveying huge shifts with as little effort as possible. I found myself trying to inhale deeply at 1:49 as if I could pull the scents out of the speakers :-) Love the bird call at the fade. Perfect!

Listening
neat idea and nice piano arrangement. at 5:30 In the morning it usually sounds like "angry birds" in my yard........when i'm trying to sleep.....that's when i let the cat out

this is fascinating
to me....
i have often wondered what it would be like to create a tune similar to this, but with different environmental backgrounds recorded in disparate places....blending with each other or fading in and out from each other....how might it effect the music that is on top of the different 'silences' from different places.....

might be
a particularly interesting experiment to do if you could somehow record all of the ambient backgrounds at approximately the same time

Inspiring.
I've been thinking about something along these lines. Now I'll have to break out the little box o'digits and go outdoors. Piano conveys a quiet mood very nicely.
