Description
After hearing our drummer Pete sing again on our "Tell Me Honey" video, I decided to write him a song for the band. Pete's into cars and surfing, so I thought a driving/surf trip song would be a good idea. Anyway, this is what I wrote, but when I put it to Pete, we both decided it would be better if I sang it (I wrote Pete some music for another song which we'll hopefully put up as PBGB soon).

So, this is about driving my (imaginary) Eldorado on a road trip from Lorne west along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria (Southern Ocean , Australia) with my "best girl" :) We will be taking this trip soon but somehow "Subaru Outback" didn't have the ring of "Eldorado" :)

I'm playing everything - 4 Tele tracks (2 x rhythm, 1 x double stop and 1 x slide), bass, midi drums and vocals. The drums were played in at the keyboard. Harmonies done just before posting - not sure they were a good idea or not. loved doing the slide part.

It's a little rough, but I quite like the vibe.

Any suggestions about genre would be welcome - I'm aware the "Blues (contemporary)" will not necessarily attract too many listeners.

Lyrics
Great Ocean Road
©2011 Neil Porter

Drive my Eldorado
Put my foot down to the floor
I’ve never felt this kind of cool before

Drop the drop top top down
Get my honey keeping score
Never felt this kind of cool before

Me and my girl gonna twist and turn
Heading west from Lorne
Great Ocean Road
Apollo Bay and the 12 Apostles
Me and my girl gonna drive
Great Ocean Road

Going incognito
Gonna keep my Raybans on
Drive along and sing my favourite songs

Gonna crank the HMV
Got “The Boys Of Summer” on
Drive along and sing my favourite songs

Me and my girl gonna twist and turn
Heading west from Lorne
Great Ocean Road
Apollo Bay and the 12 Apostles
Me and my girl gonna drive
Great Ocean Road

Aint gonna sit in silence
Ain’t gonna toe the line no more
We got sun and surf on a southern shore

We got Artisan Ochre
We got cut down beltline
We got sun and surf on a southern shore

Me and my girl gonna twist and turn
Heading west from Lorne
Great Ocean Road
Apollo Bay and the 12 Apostles
Me and my girl gonna drive
Great Ocean Road

Great Ocean Road
Genre: Rock & Roll, although blues contemporary fits just as well.

I love when you post something with that slinky/funky Little Feat vibe you do so well. The guitar tones are super and I really like the slide.

Phat mix!

Yep, memories a plenty...
Hi Neil. It is a fantastic drive. I remember doing it many times in my teens and early 20s'. Kennett River, Apollo Bay (you used to be able to camp on the Marengo Beach), Johanna, Cape Bridgewater... memories! Thanks for re-kindling images of some fantastic surfing trips (sleeping in the back of the HQ Wagon). Tom Piper sausages in a can... The Lowell George vibe is infectious. Much enjoyed, Peter.

It's got the PBGB feel. I can't believe you got that drum feel played in by the keyboard. Unbelievably fluid and organic. That's something you can show me when I visit ..haha

Nice track Neil.

I get a feeling of freedom from the lyric, and there's some swagger and rebellion in the Little Feat style groove. Nicely done!

Smooth vibe. Great song for the iPod on the highway. Loved listening to the slide part, along with all the rest. Harmonies seem to work - what would a Beach Boys car song be without harmony?

This just rolls along exactly like what it depicts - a road trip. Great sound, love it. Greatful Dead with a little J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton. Everything is well done but the vocal really stand out here and draws you in.

Hey Neil,
This has a very driving funky bluesy groovin' thing going on. That rough slightly off kilter feel is what makes this work. It feels live ... like a bunch of guys jamin' it out. Love the tele ryhthms and the slide is superb. good job with the midi drums ... you tend to listen to the smooth but gruff vocals and all those cool guitars and you don't notice they are midi drums. Real good tune and a natural sounding mix.

I've driven that road few times, and I wish I'd had this track playing while I did! Great, Neil. Full on sound that just gets the foot tapping! Love those guitars - especially the slide part, which seems just right for the bends in the road! I've downloaded it so that next time I'm going that way I'll have this with me.

Loooove the groove man. What a rhythm section you made from a midi track. I would have thought it was Pete playing the drums if you didn't tell.
Made me think of the southern atlantic seas where I grew up.

SOMEBODY....
....has got to write the 'Subaru Outback' version, though... Subaru Outbacks being one of the great cars to road trip in...

You continue to astound me with the ability to turn out tune after tune with you doing every blessed thing...Make that a second thing I'm envying you about, right after relatively youthful retirement and The Shed...

I think this is a really solid song, too, Neil, for all that it's a nod to particular sort of genre... Sounds great...
Bob6stringer said 2147 days ago (August 8th, 2011)
Quite a fine feat.
Immediately dives into a fat feat-ish feel. Your vocal's got just the right chilled with just a little edge to it, more about sharing a good vibe than any whiff of "gotta prove something." Good, honest rock, NP. Damn fine focus on arrangement and mix, too.

Road Trip!!!
Great warm weather tune for a bar band - best played outdoors, of course. Your versatility on all of the tracks is always impressive, and not to take anything away from that magic, but the vocal and lyrics really make this bop along.

I'm smelling the salt air already!

Cheers Neil,
Doug
