Description
I wrote this song based around a drum beat and the thought that I wanted to experiment with some toys that I haven't been using enough. The title comes from the drum machine app that I used (got it free in cm magazine awhile back). I wrote the electronic drum parts first, then added an acoustic kit, and then a bunch of cutting and automation of effects to another drum track which I bounced in place and edited a bit more (that part comes in the verses).

some of the synths were just played all the way through the song (I basically jammed with myself), and some were neat sounds I made that I bounced out and cut into loops. I enjoy working with audio and editing that way. This sounds nothing like hip-hop, but I am always inspired when I listen to hip-hop and hear how they loop certain bits of songs and use the repetition of a single noise as a "part."

the "synth" at the end during the bridge is actually a drum that I tweaked a lot and resampled. wasn't planning on coming out as a synth, but it seemed to work out okay. A lot of the ambient sounds were flutes that I time stretched and put through Logics spectral filter and some delay.

weirdest thing, usually I mix on headphones, but this time I went downstairs and mixed on my monitors. Sounds overly trebly to me on my headphones, so I might have to get used to mixing on the monitors again (or just stick to the headphones maybe).

the picture is my friends at work on a commercial (one of my old gigs that I gave up).

Cool song and cool sounds! Would you recommend Guru as a tool for easy and simple drum programming? Is it tweakable?

thanks a bunch. Guru is pretty cool, but they don't make it anymore (it's Geist now). Honestly I probably prefer doing drums in Ultrabeat and with EXS24. I like Ultrabeat because you can drag and drop samples and then mess with them; I like EXS because I can just make a kit as soon as I decide I like something. I also like how you can drag an audio loop into it and then turn it into a MIDI instrument and play whatever pattern you like (but use the sounds of the loop). GURU might have more options ultimately, but I'm really comfortable with the way I usually do it. I also use this freebie drum synth Mini Spillage which is good when you don't want to use drum samples:

Real nice break at :50 - the drums
overall are great. The lead synth line is awesome - and your vocals sound so relaxed in the mix. Nice one Michael.

can you hear the bass on your end? I turned it down as it was too loud on my monitors, but now I am missing it.

Love your voice here Michael. Sounds warm and bouncy. The backing vocals is you too? It sounds like it was your friend singing with you, which makes the song much more meaningful.
Crazy how you build a song like a collage of woven samples. Sounds like a lot of work when you describe how you do it, but it seems to be a lot of fun too.
I love how the lightness of the music and the melody combines with the conflict of the story. I would start dancing naively and stop in the middle of the track when I realize what's about.

yup, backing is me (I just took all of the bottom end off of them). this really was like a collage. some of the parts were recorded for a section that I dropped, but I just slid them over and liked how they sounded over the other parts of the song. not a sad song though. I was thinking of how my wife and I were friends before we ever dated and we were both worried that we might ruin our friendship by dating. came close a couple of times, but all's well that ends well. thanks for listening. you gonna post our collab or what?

you know,I had no love for that kind of music back in the day, but I really like a lot of it now. haven't had time to record any songs with real instruments and all of my electronic based pop seems to end up sounding like this. good thing for computers or my only musical outlet would be listening to the radio.

Love the photo! Also the I want to have the triple cheese synth extra cheese please :)

Nice tune with with lots of interesting accents. The drums sound great along with the other goodies. Nice effects on vocals, I can clearly hear them on my cheapy speakers.

Sounded like you had fun being the tweak master with this tunage. I so love pressing buttons and turning knobs, you never know what surprises you'll get-just like a cracker jack box:)

Thanks for the audio snack!

Love that beat and the sounds at the start. Has a very alien feel. The vocals and the harmonies are great and work well together. Some of the sounds on this are just sooo good and create the right amount of weird and cool. Some of the triplets add cool bits to the song.

I always...
...enjoy your vocals, Michael, and that's true here... I also really like the drum beat and the way the melody moves over it... I don't think the mix lacks treble, although I could hear it having a bit more bass, and some well defined bass into the bargain....
