Description
A collaboration with Michael2

Michael: drums, rhodes piano, synths
Billy: voice, guitars

I think this is the first time I started writing a song from the lyrics. Not easy neither, as expected. I found a melody and chord sequence for it, but I couldn't find the right vibe. Enter Michael making a post in a forum mentioning Alexander Skip Spence (that I saw by pure luck given my low MJ activity) and then spending almost the whole night looking for music and knowing of the story of the man.

I didn't make the connection initially, but after getting immersed in his music for days I thought of this song. I made a rough demo and asked Michael if he wanted to add his magic touch and he graciously accepted.

Although it doesn't seem like that, the song is played to a click. The instruments move freely around the metronome, so it probably won't be a very easy listening experience. When I listened to Spence's music I found that the roughness, those imperfections, made the music more fresh and open, human I think is a good word for that, and it somehow uncovered something very deep that I felt connected to.

You'll find a couple references in the words to some of my rediscovered influences (Dylan, Duritz and, in turn, their influences).

I hope you like it.

(Edit Jul/28/2011) Changed the name of the song (was 'Looking 4', I liked it because it was short, but too cryptic). I'm not sure bout the genre neither, but I'll keep it as is.

Lyrics
Looking at the television

Staring right back at the fog
where no one looks like you,
unfortunately.

Years since we were all,
or nothing at all. Your mouth
an expensive brand of cool flesh

Whether you came from the heavens,
fell from no mother,
or rose behind the dust,
Angels got what you paid for.

The wounded flowers are perfect.
I needed a bucket of lies,
I needed a silent megaphone.
I needed to feel your pardon

I'm not looking for attention,
Just looking at the television

The old man is drinking
Threading his own sorrow
I can avenge his soul
but I need a shot.

He is the old road
He is infinite
He's starting to fade
About to become a distance.

The night suddenly begins
to be just about anyone.

I'm not looking for attention,
Just looking at the television

Russian friends
I have a couple of Russian friends that I would love they read your post (I will take care of that). We occasionally have a jam til late in the nights, they play Russian songs, I play Argentinean songs (we all know some songs in English), and by the virtues of vodka and wine we don't care much about understanding the words. But I don't know if some of that unconsciously influenced me (it has to be something unconscious for sure).
Yeah, you should check out Skip's music: that's good... gyoood.

So it probably won't be a very easy listening experience? Are you kidding? This is a great listen. Such a dark vibe! Of course that dark vibe brings Pink Floyd to mind right away. I think the humming and minor key guitar changes does that. But your voice has an original quality to it that differentiates this from anything the Floyd ever did. Michael's Rhodes is a perfect contrast your dark guitar. Outstanding work by the two of you!

Easy listening
Well, yeah, probably not too hard to listen to now after Michael's parts are in the right place in the mix. Not easy to listen was probably a goal in the beginning. Mmmh, I had forgotten about that.

The bass part is completely out of sync and I asked Michael to leave the drums unquantized after he sent me his initial tracks (I'm sure he wanted to retouch them a little). The guitar is mainly on tempo but the playing is quite rough. The rhodes comes and go, the synth floats everywhere (and it's really dark). Based on all that I thought there were good chances of challenging people to make an effort to listen.
Crap, we failed miserably.

alpha inducing
for sure. i had a great time on this one. still not sure what happened with the rhodes track/synth thing. I think you may have been seeing the waveforms of the effects I put on it. whatever happened, this sounds great. nice job with the mix and with the composition. was a pleasure.

Otherwordly man
That rhodes/synth thing was a screw up I made when dropping the files in the project: I dropped two files in one single track. Hard to explain with words.
I owed you a proper collab after "silent tango", that was my excuse to ask but, how is possible to owe something and to receive instead of giving? To the person I was 2 years ago this is a dream come true.
Thank you man.

Billy and Micheal
This is very different from that demo. It is still minimal but the added Rhodes is tastefully done. Alpha inducing it sure is. I could visualize many stories, this has atmospheric pressure, the combined harmonic vocal is quite chilling. Exciting conceptual direction, but then most things you do are. Interesting the way you latch onto these stories then convey them to music. Well, it is always worth the wait, I hope the words will follow. Great imagination, I admire what you are trying to do.

Thanks bro. It sounds different. I experienced the alpha inducing strength of this while listening in my car (parked) (warning and disclaimer: don't try to drive and listen to this one).
It even crossed my mind that the humming must be some kind of om word.

It's interesting how those simple parts create some accidental nuances that only appear in the mix and are not evident in the soloed tracks (@3:22 for example). Some kind of frequency combing between the tracks I think. Not intentional at all. Almost magical. Unless I'm crazy (could be, my wife tells me that all the time).

My feeling for this piece, but I like the music and the sedate type vocals that flows with it. Esoteric lyrics are a puzzle for my own experiences to put together, which I like very much. Great job and collaboration guys! Thanks for sharing this one.

Hard to describe...
The lyrics are not easy: I guess they are demanding. There's not really an evident linear story to follow. You nailed it with the idea of a puzzle: it is like that. I think of these words as image triggers, like flashes in a dark room. Your brain will try to extract some sense of all that, some idea of what is the room about. The best thing is that your movie won't be the same as mine.

Fascinating
Wow, adventurous and a mesmerizing sonic journey. I do love the imagery of the lyrics. The space in-between is impressive too. I know that writing sparse music is harder than it sounds, and I seem to write very busy and dense mixes, perhaps I don't trust myself to do more with less. I'll listen to your song as a successful example. Yes it can be a tough listen because it challenges the listener, So well done and so interesting.

Body rhythm
Bud, it's like you saw me recording it. I recorded the reference track to a click (I was thinking of making life easier to Michael), but from then on the beat of everything else was the stomping that remained in that track. So the beat drifts ahead and behind of the click with the mood, like an improvisation on tempo.

That guitar is so cheap it's lovely how she tries to sound good. The bass part is the same guitar played only with the left hand and shifted one octave down. It sounds like a fretless acoustic bass if you ever need one.

155 channels and nothingness
I think one of the hallmarks of good song writing - or at least good personal expression - is recording something that defies catagorization. I mean, Psychedelic is fine, as the moody tonalities and lyrical ambiguity help trigger imaginary thoughts … but then psychedelic is just a state of mind : )

If there was a category for "3 A.M. Songs" this could go in it.

This does have the feel of late night/early morning privacy … where ones' thoughts can reveal everything … as well as nothing.

I don't know, I think some of these imperfections … the nicks and dents and scratches and blemishes that arise out of the recording process … are what make songs like this special. If you tried to insert them it would seem fake, but by letting them become part of the experience makes it feel real (even if it is a psychedelic illusion).

Imperfection as human nature
Thanks man for your wonderful comment. I was thinking on what you are saying here... without much success.
I guess imperfections are liberating for the performer because you can focus on the music as a whole instead of making every single note perfect. But then there's some kind of balance because you still want to play well, so others can understand what you try to express. I really don't want to think much about it, that would make it artificial. Again.
As artificial as a categorization is, for example.
Thanks again man.

from the humming in the intro to the end, this has a sense of anticipation about it - just waiting for ... not sure what.... to happen. A dark vibe that winds round each note. Great tune guys.
