Description
Another oldie of mine. I can’t remember exactly when I wrote Lonesome Luke, but I had written several like it, so I guess it was more or less from a series following the same theme: The truth gets twisted.

Davisamerica (Jack) helped me (Davisamerica 2) throw this together. He did the mixing, and recommended these fine musicians you’re hearing here. Rich (Rgpaddler) provided the organ in Luke, something I’ve always wanted, and I couldn’t have been happier with his performance here. Neil (Jiguma) has supplied a steller bass for several of my songs, but lately I’ve discovered his talent on six string is just as much his forte, and in this case, slide guitar. Freddy (Loob) gave me a drum track that really moved it along, and was just what was in my head when I wrote it.

Before MacJams, I’d sit in my room playing these songs, and just fantasize about adding these other parts. These guys fulfilled my fantasies, and I’m very grateful for their time and talent. We hope you enjoy what we’ve done here. Peace. Terry

Lyrics
Lonesome Luke

Just twenty seven years ago, before the edge of town was moved
They held a sermon ‘neath some trees, and then they strung up ol’ Lonesome Luke
He had a dyin’ word or two; I still recall their faces
But when they read him that scripture verse it emptied his sleeves of all aces.

He was raised in the orphanage. In 49 they tore it down
They put the kids on the prison steps, and vowed they weren’t trackin’ what they’d already found
It ain’t enough for just one God-fearin’ marm to go a-beatin’ the butt of the devil
Ol Lonesome Luke was destined for hell long before he took a swing with that shovel

Jimmy Lee and his brother Tom were given to the preacher: They minded the church
They learned too well the ways of Ol Luke. He’d taken them huntin’ and fishin’ for perch
But every poison has a remedy; the taste can’t always be soothin’
If Tom and Jimmy were to learn just one thing it’s that the Lord’s Law ain’t a-movin’

They remembered those stories he told; Beavers with hatchets and angels in jail
And the one about not bein’ born. He never did finish. He never did tell
How an orphan truly comes about. His tears interrupted the story
He just scurried off leavin’ them to guess. The next day he met up with Glory

The town awoke to the cryin’ of crows. It was just high noon, and the word was spread
Ol Luke was holed up in Farrington’s barn. His bitch dog and Farrington were lyin’ there dead
They carried him down to the riverside. The sun was beatin’ down heavy
They washed his sins, then they hung ‘im to dry. Tom and Jimmy, they watched from the levy. They watched him die.

Terry, you are such a magnificent storyteller. This is one fabulous song - i love the hammond in here, artfully done by mr. paddler! slide guitar sounds GREAT neil, and mr. loob-ola delivers masterfully on the drums. jack is one of the best mix-masters in these parts - great job!!!

Hi, Karen.
I was pretty lucky to gather this crew up. All these guys really clicked on Luke. I had to redo some of my stuff just to get a little closer up there to their standards. You can't help but get better in this place. Thanks for the kind words, Karen, from all of us on the prison steps. T

Whenever I have a repetitious chord pattern...
...I figure I'd better be saying something worth hearing. I'm sure I met this Luke character somewhere, sometime in my life. I'm glad I got around to writing about him. And I'm glad to have had these talented friends to help me tell the story. Thanks for the comments, Chris. Terry & all.

so mr. pearson
you got some splain'in to do ...lol ...who else would come up with lines like .."they washed his sins and hung em up to dry"... Terry this is one of your best and I was so pleased to get to come along for the ride. Rich wails on the hammond and neil's lead is blazing good... it's all fantastic guys. Hats off to you all.

btw... any clue about the thing Luke couldn't finish telling...wow..wow..wow..excellent brother.

Sometimes when I write lines like that...
...I check the sky for dark clouds and stay away from windows. And if you want to call your contribution "coming along for the ride," well fine, brother, but your back seat driving put a beautifully polished finish on Lonesome Luke, and we all thank you for that. You did some excellent mixing here too, Jack. As for Luke's unfinished story, that will be revealed in Part 2 (if I can figure out how Luke survives the noose.) Thanks again, bro. Terry

As I told you several weeks ago this sad story really tugged at me. A sign that you've done a great job at evoking emotion! Great job on the mix Jack! I can hear every instrument, and vocal! As usual, nice job Neil and Mr. Paddler I'm a fan of your keyboard work! Couldn't ask for a better team doing a great song justice. Thanks for thinking of me on this one folks!

OK ... love the mix. The harp and slide at the start is great .Acoustic is real clear and I'm diggin' that organ in there. Super vocals and lyrics and right on Loob for laying it down good and solid!!! This is a fine tune with a pro band and a fresh sounding mix.

Loob did lay it down good.
Had my music here, but really wanted those toes to be tapping. I sure had the right man for this! I'm also happy with Jack's work on my acoustic guitars. I sent him some pretty sloppy tracks, and he cleaned them up beautifully, and didn't have to hide them. Neil and Rich really complemented each other on these strings and keys. Great performance by all these guys. Thanks for the kind words. T

The master story teller
leaves us a bit of golden glory. Wonderful story telling Terry, as only you could do it.

The gathering of Rich, Neil, Freddy, and Jack to put their touch on this was a stroke of genius. Excellent work by all of you, kudos to the band. Jack, I think you've outdone yourself on this mix my friend, it sounds almost fluid in it's smoothness.

All in all, I'd say this is one of, if not the very best you ever done Terry. Bravo to all involved.

Lonesome Luke
supreme story telling. i want to more about this "Beavers with hatchets and angels in jail" :-)

great tune and above the bar supporting cast. Neil has really learned to rip away with a slide. fred's drums really drive this home. of course richard's keyboard work is phenominal. plus jack did a excellent job with mix and supplying the snacks

Yes, I had to make Luke a storyteller.
Haven't heard the ones about beavers with hatchets or angels in jail, but I'm sure there's a moral behind them. I could hear a slide in this, and I knew Neil knew how to do this, so I hit him up. No disappointment here! Rich and Freddy did a fantastic job too. Mr. DA did a great mix, but he must have given my snacks to one of the others. Thanks, Vic. T

Great work guys! The ballad told a story that held interest and the musicianship is first class as I expected. Neil's slide added some authentic wild west tumbleweed vibe and the vocal work told the tale well. Nice drums too, Freddy. The organ also added to the authentic feel. Nice, spacious mix! Great story
I love songs that tell a story, as this one does. And when there are such musicians playing on it it really makes things happen. I do especially enjoy that slide guitar of Neil's - great sound, great lines. The vocal delivery has an urgency and slight roughness to it that suits the song perfectly. Super song! Very pleased that the Internet and sites like MacJams have made this sort of performance possible!
