Lyrics
Animal Crackers. written 2011

I am telling you that I don’t want to be a part of it all,
I have news for you this will never do catch me if I should fall,
Saw the queen today dressed to kill but hey, who has draw the short straw,
Understandably this was meant to be I’m just one of the poor.

People fill the square most without a care who will pay the high price,
You may bight your lip, best to get a grip, some may call it a vice,
I have swallowed so much though I don’t know my addiction seems sad,
I should not complain I have much to gain, you’re the best chance I’ve had.

Animal crackers are filling my mind, though I’ve covered my options it’s true,
I see tigers and elephants all of the time there’s nothing I can do
Animal crackers are ruling my life, they’re always calling the tune,
If I don’t see an animal cracker again then I know it’ll be too soon.

There’s no worse a fate, high on traitor’s gate you can take it from me,
They have set the date no more time to wait crowds are straining to see,
Alcoholic haze moving in a daze breathing deep of the air,
I am telling you rest assured it’s true you must always prepare.

Animal crackers are filling my mind, though I’ve covered my options it’s true,
I see tigers and elephants all of the time there’s nothing I can do
Animal crackers are ruling my life, they’re always calling the tune,
If I don’t see an animal

Animal Crackers
I like the timing of the phrases in the lyrics. I found myself singing along and just enjoyed the harmonies as well. It's a peculiar song to me-I can't explain, but I can relate somehow. Can you share with me what the line "I should not complain I have much to gain, you’re the best chance I’ve had." means? That might be the key for my understanding.

Thanks for sharing this one.

Thank you Patty
I had to think myself for a moment as this was written back in March and much has passed through my mind since then. It is mostly about the thoughts of a condemned prisoner at his execution in the middle ages. the line you mentioned relates to his thoughts about the headsman - 'you're the best chance I have' meaning in fact - the only chance. That's the only way I can describe it - animal crackers are the mad mob who have come to watch. Hope this helps. The music is inspired very much from composers of this time.

Thanks JD
This year I decided to write purely for my own pleasure and this is one of the results, lots of experiments here. Mostly nonsense I imagine.

Really interesting and refreshing composition. It slightly reminds me of old british pub songs. Great work, I like this!

Hello Julian -
as the Duke once said - don't get 'round much anymore - thanks for listening and of course commenting - I have been writing a lot but not posting that much. Re the quirky sound - I think this happens when you use unusual timings and then suddenly throw in one measure of 4/4 without warning - not really dance stuff. As always I appreciate your kind criticism. Hope you are well.

an aversion to love songs
- well maybe not all of them,

I think this was probably inspired by the Tudors period - awful time to be alive I imagine.

Thank you for the comment and the listen. Much appreciated.

Leading with lyrics, melody:
A fine exercise in letting lyrics and melody call the tune. (Are you a They Might Be Giants fan? Wouldn't be surprised.) Great, innovative and yet kind of Medieval at the same time... really neat.

Hello Dick
- hymn like - you are so right I borrowed heavily from both the Anglican chant and the harmony style of the hymn. Time consumung and complicated sometimes especially when -like me- you have a limited vocal range. Thanks for listening and for the comment me old mate.

I'd normally shy away from any song that has so many words in it--just out of laziness (and because it's not easy) but you excelled with this and then some...beautiful stuff and quite impressive (and oh yes, a joy to listen to as well!) Michael

hey, I was just thinking about you the other day and wondering where you'd got to.
Glad to know you're still with us and making brilliant, inventive music.
I agree with Dick about the 'hymnal' quaility of this..though I can't put my finder on quite why.
Something about the vocal phrasing.
anyway, always a delight to hear your stuff
enjoyed

gallows humor indeed -
a form of entertainment in those days - I remember reading a story which is supposed to be true about a condmned man asking the hangman - just before stepping onto the trap door as to whether it was safe! - Thank you for listening Char, I'm glad you liked it.
