Description
Another gentle love song - I'd better try something different next time! I'm interested in some feedback on a couple of things. First, I had some drum loops in but thought they sounded too artificial so I deleted them. If there any drummers who feel they could add something interesting, please let me know!

Also, I copied the guitar solo, pasted it into a new track, moved it slightly off the beat and gave it a different tone from the first guitar, just to fill the sound out. Now I'm not sure if it would have been better left alone. Any comments would be appreciated.

Apart from that, I hope you enjoy the song!

The photo (taken by my wife, Gaby) is of a sunset at the beach near Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia. A sky like velvet.

Like Velvet

She comes into the room like velvet
As silent as the mist of frosty nights
She makes no fuss to hide her own misgivings
I understand her many wrongs and rights

She’s near me when I’m in the depths of sadness
And truth is smiling as I see her by
She’ll never try to answer hopeless questions
She’s too entwined to ask the reason why

She’s there when autumn’s colours splash the daybreak
When leaves are falling gently to their home
When the streams are gliding through their pastures
And when we sit and watch the sunset all alone

Could anything be deeper than her wisdom?
Is there anything as warm as she is now?
And when she finds some silver in the darkness
She’ll lead you to the truth and tell you how.

Instrumental

She comes into the room like velvet
As silent as the mist of frosty nights
And when she finds some silver in the darkness
She’ll lead you to the truth and show you how.

Your
guitar work is so sweet and cool. Very smooth in every way. Vocal are emotional and fit the song perfectly. Nicely done!

Thanks
Glad you liked it, Mark. RE the vocal, I guess it's the sort of song that suits me (which is why I keep doing them). Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

This sounds great! I love the song and your vocal. Your music is so organic I would be reluctant use drum loops. If you really want drums in there and loops are the only option I find audio loops to be more pleasing than MIDI drum loops (IMO). And I'm sure most or all of MJ's drummers would want to work with you!

Maybe some simple percussion you could do yourself (on the cheap). Maybe a tambourine, shakers, or bongos.

Interesting way to get a doubling effect on the lead guitar. I like it. It's adding flavor to the sound. Some may like the taste more than others. In the end you're the one who has to be pleased with it.

Food for thought
Thanks for the comments, Andrew. I'll keep playing with some percussion, although it's not an area where I'm comfortable. Probably my best option will be to see if there's an MJ drummer prepared to help out.

Glad you liked the guitar effect. I liked it a lot when I first did it, but as is often the case, after I listen a few times I tend to want to go back to the simpler, cleaner version.

I appreciate the comments, Char. I guess I spent enough years in coffee lounges to understand small rooms!

Another quality song...
Hi Philip. I know I have said this before but your lyrics often remind me of something Gordon Lightfoot would write. Or vice versa :-) Another quality song! In terms of percussion, some subtle brushes would fit in nicely but some simple bongos could work too. I was kind of waiting for a bridge again to just vary things up a bit. I know the solo can fill that void but the melody lent itself to one. The doubled lead worked fine. Nice photo by Gaby, too. Talk soon, Peter.

Yes, that Gordon Lightfoot always seems to be writing the songs I want to write a couple a years before I think of writing them - and it's been going on for years! Re the brushes and bongos, I appreciate the idea, but don't think I have the skill to implement it - when I try it sounds like a person who doesn't know what they're doing. And you're probably right about a bridge - this song is a bit longer than some of the others and additional variety might have helped. As is probably obvious, I don't do bridges all that often. Might have to think about that.

The title also describes your style on this tune..,enjoyed it much!!

As for the requested feedback,,,
Doesn't really need percussion imho.If hard pressed to add anyway..maybe some tasteful brushwork on a jazz kit,or a ride on some conga or bongos.

The guitar track that you time sliped is a stroke of genius,

Thanks
I appreciate the feedback. I'm hoping a drummer will turn up who wants to add the sort of things you suggest.

Re the guitar track, if it's a stroke of genius then the genius is PeterB, who gave me the idea re harmony vocals - I just used it in a new context!

Nice tune. Very mellow and enjoyable to relax to on a warm Saturday afternoon. As far as percussion, my ears hear something simple like a shaker holding down a simple rhythm, and maybe introducing some light bongos as the song progresses would be cool. I don't think percussion is necessary, but certainly could enhance the song. As far as the effect on the guitar, it sounds really cool - I might suggest bringing down the volume of the effected guitar a bit so it is more of an effect, as opposed to a prominent instrument.

These are my opinions, and you know what they say about opinions! Overall I enjoyed the song - your singing voice reminds of G Lightfoot and even a little Tom Jones. Enjoyed!

I appreciate you taking the time for the detailed comments, Sigmund. RE the guitar, I've tried a few things with it - I went with the current version because I thought it sounded different, but I know I can get carried away with that and it may be better to do as you suggest - particularly for this song. Re the bongos, I still think my lack of skill would show up...

Some Voice!
I definitely get a Gordon Lightfoot vibe, but your voice is great! Definitely one of the best I've heard since I've been on MacJams. The Lyrics are tender and heartfelt. I might just suggest some sort of percussion or musical development as the song goes on.

Overall, great job.

Strong imagery in the lyric. Melody & backer fit the lyric perfectly. The guitar solo as is works for me.

Some as a fine burgandy
...and with that warm feeling you get inside. You have such a handsome voice Phillip--beautiful, lyrical song and your accompaniment is just as good as everything else here. Your write excellent lyrics--they are just right. By the way, I just heard your guitar on the "project" and it was a real delight to play the piano with you on that. Thanks again--and take good care, Michael

PS: I know you know, but this cut off just a bit short at the end--it's okay though!

I appreciate your support and positive comments, Michael - they are much appreciated. Yes it will be fascinating to see how the project turns out - I'm looking forward to hearing the finished product!

Re the short end, I hadn't realised that. I notice that the time on this is 3.54 and the time on the file I uploaded is 3.55. Not sure how that happened and even less sure what I can do about it. I think I'd have to upload a new version and have them both here (or delete this one and lose all the comments) to fix it. Annoying.

Really nice gentle song, I like it as it is but could easily be added too, shame Im no drummer

Glad you liked the song, Neil. I think I'll leave it alone at this stage - maybe in the future I'll see if I can find a drummer before I post something rather than after.
