Description
The lyrics
Relationships need to be two way things - in this song, it isn't. Probably neither party listening much, although it's the guy who gets to present his perspective.

The music
Pitched a bit higher than my comfort zone, but I like that Em run and so stretched the voice a bit.

The instruments
The Maton FG 100 playing two finger-style tracks (miked) one at the first position, the other with a capo on the 7th fret.
Used the Fishman Neo pickup on the same guitar for the lead lines because I still struggle to get an even tone on lead breaks with just a mike. One vocal track and that's it.

The chords
Em | Am | Em |
Am | Cmaj7 | Cmaj7|
Em | Am | Em |
Am | Cma7 | Em

Am | Cmaj7 | Em
Am |Em9 | Em9 |
Am | Cmaj7 | Em
Am | Em Em+7 |Em7 Em6 |Cma7 |Em

The photo was taken out of a tram window by our young nephew Lachlan on a trip through Melbourne.

Hope you enjoy the song!

Lyrics
Winter Song

Laura sings a winter song to me
Of all that’s been taken
Living deep within her dreams and fears
In a world of her making

In open fields cascading tears my mind
It will cry for you
But inside city streets my life goes on
I cannot die for you

A parti-coloured clown or slow guitar
I am not always there
Although I show you just the lonely smiles
That you have made me wear

As Laura sings that winter song I know
She has not listened well
Despite this winter morn I ask for spring
Laura please listen well

Winter Song
Beautiful work Phillip, just excellent! Everything here works so well in conjunction with one another (the melody, the accompaniment on your guitar, your vocal and those fine lyrics--"party-colored clown"--superb--down to the mix). Thanks for sharing this--full marks!

Thanks
Glad you liked it, Michael. I actually wrote "parti" rather than "party" for the coloured clown - but I like "party" better! Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Winter Song
Beautiful piece. I'm enjoying the lead tone with the pickup... also nice with that little bit of delay on it. It gives a nice difference tonally than the miked acoustic tracks. I like this progression...Am | Em Em+7 |Em7 Em6 |Cma7 |Em. Excellent playing throughout and as always I am a big fan of your vocals.

Thanks
Glad you liked it, Stan. Re the guitar, I tried various guitar sounds from Garageband and Line 6, but finally just came back to a "No effects" but then adding a little bit of echo and reverb. I think it gives a nice warm sound. As well as the progression you mention, I like that Em9 chord, too - I think I first heard it used like that on the Elton John song "Love Song"? Anyway, I appreciate your comments, Stan.

Lovely
Reminds me of a Paul Simon tune in its lyrical sophistication and beautifully worked guitar accompaniment. The echoey tones of your voice remind me somewhat of that atmosphere, too.

Really nice job this, and sincerity is there.

Much enjoyed.

Elegant...
Hi Philip, I agree with Marc re the lyrical sophistication of this song and his reference to Paul Simon. The song has an elegant reflective quality that is enhanced by the fine guitar accompaniment and the tasteful lead lines. Congratulations on a fine posting. Talk soon, Peter.

Thanks, Peter. I sort of worried that the other person's story wasn't told, but maybe that's for the next song :-) Glad you liked the lead lines - I was happy with the tone of the guitar on those. See you soon!

Love those winter songs and this is no exception.
Beautiful and aptly named. One forgets that it's winter in Melbourne right now. Be of good cheer 'cuz spring is just day's away.

Glad you liked the song. Yes, spring is nearly here. Sun is a bit warmer than it was and the sky bluer. Football finals closer (a fact which consumes Melbourne in September!) Thanks for listening and commenting.

Love the guitar work. Vocals are great too, but the echo/reverb is a tad very noticeable. Overall very very good, though!

Thanks
I appreciate the comments re the guitar and vocals, Vic. Re the echo, I went back and had a look at what I'd done with that. I usually just use "Live Performance" in Garageband and don't add anything, but this time, because I think of the key being a bit higher than I like, I added echo and reverb to fill it out. I'll keep a closer eye on that next time - as I listen now I can hear what you mean. Thanks for the constructive comments - they're helpful.

Smooth
What I like most about this song is its simplicity and the very calm vocal that feels just about perfect even though you say it's out of your comfort zone. Maybe THAT forced you to be delicate with it, and that's why it comes off so smoothly. The guitar work, too, is superb and played with such a deft, sure touch, sliding through the hammer ons with easy and a really refined and controlled touch. Just a beautiful song all around.

You may be right about the forced delicacy in the vocal, Paul - I certainly wasn't pushing it! Thanks for the comments on the guitar work - I do love that Maton and having owned it for just over 40 years, feel it's part of me now.

Rich tonality
This is a hauntingly intimate song carried by your lovely guitar work that caresses your lead vocal. Thoroughly engaging. Thank you for making it downloadable.

Spring is right around the corner in Oz. New inspiration for another piece?

Be well,
Doug

Thanks
I appreciate the positive comments, Doug - and downloading I regard as the highest compliment! Yes, spring is here and things are starting to warm up after a very wet winter (which is a good thing after 10 years of drought). Not sure whether it's spring or the MacJams community, but I am spending a bit of time working on a few things at the moment!
