Description
I have always loved this song, but alas, the only baby I walk home these days is my dog Farina when I take him out on our nightly prowls about the neighborhood and the little nature park nearby.

I'm nearly certain I've committed mix suicide by channeling this thing and other odds and ends (was going to advertise this under the attention-grabbing banner "Puts YOU in the Audience!!" or "Puts YOU Out of Sorts!") but yanno, you learn from your mistakes (of which this is the LEAST of them, let me tell you!)

Thanks for listening,

Michael

"Walking My Baby Back Home" was written by Roy Turk and Fred E. Ahlert, 1929 (PD)
Arrangement and accompaniment performed by Alan McPike
Vocal: The Whispering Bimbo
Artwork: Farina (And by the by: is it me or doesn't he resemble that old gangster movie actor, George Raft?)

First!
Brings back memories of the many times I've played this one - used to be part of a Barn Dance sequence a band I worked with did! Your expressiveness shines through. Vocal perfectly suited to the style of the song. Also, I like Alan McPike's work - his backing tracks have character.

Yeah, this tune usually is a crowd pleaser--I think it's just those age of innocence lyrics and who amongst us have not had a night as described in the song at one time? Thanks so very much from both Alan and myself--and thanks greatly for listening! You take care now, Michael

I could use a smile myself lately (personal problems galore right now--although this too shall pass) and it makes me feel a bit better knowing there are kind and talented folks like yourself who feel my music has something to offer (it means a lot really--just for the song itself!) Thanks so very much--and you hang in there! I am! Michael

Hey Mark!
As I mentioned to you, I had to put them in hibernation due to a persistent trouble-maker (I think the "coast is clear" now so will have them all back to normal shortly). Glad you enjoyed this romp and am looking forward to working with you again soon...thanks for your kindness there by the way! Take care and talk to you soon! Michael

Beautifully done!! I like what you did here, you're always hard on yourself (we have that in common-that I'm hard on myself , not on you) Great tune, as usual!
P.S. I was about to hand over my money to Farina, then I realized he wasn't a gangster. :-)

Yanno, I'm glad you mentioned that, because I've been fuzzified something terrible lately--could have been running around with that toothache for two weeks (I'm slow to call the dentist, but I'm fixed up now!) Farina
I saw him this morning before leaving and he resented that George Raft wisecrack. Love you through thick and thin and I hope you know that. You have so many gifts and a way about you that makes me feel fortunate being around you all these years although I wish you would clean up your bedroom more than twice a year.

Brilliant
I've always thought I was the one having suicidal tendencies when it comes to mixing but repeated attempts seems to make us safer people :-) Great performance as always Michael, and I love the song page, I think it's a beauty added to the song and your performance. Lovely picture of Farina and I was struck by the keywords ! And the point about Nostradamus is a revelation for me, although I think I remember seeing a few open collaborations on ProphetsOnline.com :-)

Thanks again Yves
I did a version of this thing a couple years ago that I think I performed better, but don't ya know it sounds like it was recorded in a missile silo (way too much reverb back in those days). I'm glad you liked this version however! But back to the mixing: it's taken me a good 6 or 7 years, but I've reached the implacable conclusion that no mix is ever THE perfect mix--you just do the best you can I suppose! You take care now and hope all is okay across the pond with you and your family, Michael

my favourite songs ever since Johnnie Ray had a hit in the 60's in the UK (Loved the guy) and I had all his records. A really nice bouncy version here Michael, great backing to your always so pro vocals.... loved it all over again, regards M

Glad you remember Johnnie Ray--I think he got better as he got older, but then, he was not as popular as in his early days--he was a bit of an acquired taste for some early in his career.

Appreciated hearing from you and I don't know, about this music, while the eras they were created in where not as "perfect" we romantically picture them, there is an innocence to the music that I find I need in this present day and age--a respite from the ugliness all around me. Farina is a regular Cesar Romero, let me tell you! You take care now! Michael

You must be one of those "photograph psychics"--you would risk losing your same style of handwriting if you attempted to hijack one of Farina's bones, believe me! He's affectionate, very loyal to his masters, but yeah, a bit of a Fred Mertz dog, which is one reason I adore him. Thanks very much for checking and taking a listen--and for the very kind words. Your dad
Sounds much like the one I had--he once caught me listening to some old Glenn Miller records in my bedroom and stopping at the door, he said (very solemn-like), "You know Michael, if only you had been around during the era when guys like Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman were making these records. You would have been in your early 50s today." And then he left. Thanks again Chris--and take care now, Michael

Yeah, that's one of Farina's more "serious" portraits (he's really a dog of a thousand faces though). I hope you are feeling better really soon, but in the meantime, you stay away from TWBs, the NTWs, and of course, the JMs until you feel better! Thank you so much for the big boost you give me Imps! Thanks for listening and thanks for the kind words! Yanno, one thing I wanted to develop as part of any "style" (such as I have) is to be sure the listener clearly understands each and every word, so I'm pretty sure you had to to replay that part because you were a bit puzzled or intrigued by that lyric, which as I picture it now, getting talcum powder all over your vest must have entailed some removal of clothes for all I can figure! Either that or the girl had talcum powder in her hair or better yet, had a tub of it that she brought out just for that particular application--I'm not sure! I'm pretty sure back in those days however, that they did not have spray on deodorant and stuff--talcum was probably it back in those days! You take care now and hope you have a good week! Michael

Marvelous rendition Michael & Alan
when I read about your "mix suicide" I listened a few times to see what you meant.. only "odd" things that struck me was how the vocals were a little to the right (which worked fine I thought) but then at around 01:07 (for the instrumental break) the band seemed to all shift/drift left- then return to the C for the vocals coming back. I would have just kept the band C for the intrumental break.. perhaps the ride cymbals could be a smidge off to the left.. but just volume automate the band +0.5 or +1db?? This is all subjective conjecture needless to say.. it was a marvelous rendition with great performances all round.

Hi APB
Thanks for the advice regarding panning (something I rarely do and on this thing, I believe I used Mixcraft for the post production and I'm more experience with Audition) but I conceded the panning deal was a bit sloppy (I think Adobe does a more accurate job of it--or at least it's easier to gauge--not sure!). Glad you liked this song and again, appreciated your taking the time to give me some constructive feedback. Thanks again--and take care now! Michael

Yes, I've always loved this song too.

Your voice is great. I'm not happy with that guitar in the left channel. The sound is a bit thick, overpowering the piano. (Hm. What's with the strange panning of the piano? Mostly it's in the right channel, and then suddenly left?)
