Description
Now I know this is long, but it's shorter than it originally was.
I'll explain; this was a poem I wrote as a consolation for my cousin whose father (a Pastor) had died in 1994. He was extremely distraught at the time ,and I really wanted to help him come out of the dark cloud he was under, so I wrote this poem , which really did help him. Since then many people have asked if they could also have a copy and it's brought a lot of comfort to a lot of bereaved people over the years.
I had this waltz -like chord pattern going round for months now and could never find lyrics to suit, until I was reminded of the poem when Ed passed away last month and I wondered if the words would fit the chords and rhythm. I was too late getting it recorded, because of my arthritic left hand first and second fingers, which isn't conducive to playing guitar LOL. Anyway I got the guitar recorded and then my breathing got the better of me, but I managed to get this recorded last night at last.
I missed posting it at the time of Ed's passing, but I'm sure he won't mind sharing it with the bereaved of the 9/11 anniversary this week. It's really a Monologue with guitar accompaniment. I'd thought of adding a synth in the background, but then felt it might detract to much from the words. it's quite long, even though I cut out a couple of verses, so I'm sorry about that, but I do hope you give it a listen, M

Lyrics
1Why do you gaze at my picture, can’t you remember me still?
Can’t you recall how I walked down the hall? The love in my voice? It’s here still.
I’m not looking back from the picture, but standing beside you always,
Nothing has changed as you go day to day, ‘loved you then and you know always will.
2. It was sad at our very last meeting, so sad, but I just had to go,
So I left you a gift that is better by far, than a picture, and one-day you’ll know.
It’s the gift of compassion I taught you; all the love in your heart that you share,
Best of all it’s the gift of “The word of The Lord”, which found me, when I needed it most.
3. Take its strength, it is there to support you; realise that I’m using it still,
As a means to reach out and to hold you, So be strong and don’t make yourself ill.
It’s my duty to go; to progress, don’t you know ? To where those gone before, are in light.
Yet the sadness you show just won’t let me go, ‘till I feel and I know you’re all right.
4.The sadness is part of your learning, so that as time goes on, strength will grow,
And the strength to go on is the challenge I leave; when it’s over, we’ll meet, and you’ll know,
That you never did need to punish yourself, you gave love, and it’s here with me still,
And my love as well, is still with you right now, to help you climb over this hill.

5. I’ve finished the part that I played here, and I’m handing it over to you,
Not to walk the same path, but to follow your own (for experience I’ll come along too),
Now take heart from these words that I’m saying, and never look back just to see,
If things could have been better; they couldn’t. They came so just set yourself free.
6. Yes, I know of the sadness your feeling, put those thoughts in the past ‘till they’re gone,
‘Cause it’s time to look out to the future, and to know that what’s gone is now gone.
There’s a choice you can make for that future, you can make it whatever you will,
Make it bright for yourself and the others, and know that I’m waiting here still.
7. I will never be found in the darkness, and sadness was never my scene,
So look into the light, think things that are bright and let happiness enter each dream.
Then sometimes remember with fondness, the times when we laughed and felt glad,
With a smile now, I think I’ll afford you, to think of the times that seemed bad,
8. Many times we got mad, and we sometimes were sad, but together we always pulled through,
So remember what came from those bad times, and the fact that we always pulled through,
We never looked back, but kept looking ahead, though many things clouded our view.
We all have to travel this journey; it goes on, sometimes up, then down too,
9. Yes it’s good that we feel these emotions, most people will meet them the same,
But it shows we’re all one, and we all have to come, to the knowledge that love rules the game.
Our love never dies, it goes onward, is always rewarding those who,
Have shared it the most and spread word of its host, The Lord God, who will make us anew.
10. For once gone, we are never forgotten and are given the chance to renew,
All the vows that we should have begotten, ’were too busy to carry on through.
So I’m taking this chance to recant them, just in case I’d forgotten to do,
Did I tell you I always did love you? Did I say I know you love me too?
Well I think we all know by our feelings, though unspoken it always was true,
That love, is what brought us together, and it’s love that will carry us through.

repeat first verse.

Hi Sammy
Thanks for taking all this in.... had to put as much expression as I could in this, to keep up any interest. Yes, it's me playing guitar and putting up with a lot of pain as well (shows in the voice LOL), Cheers M

Yes Sammy,
I play guitar on most of my songs and that's how I write them, by playing chords first and fitting a melody next, cheers M

Maurice...
such poignant lyrics. Impressive conversational writing that captures the grief, the mending of confusion and hurts, and also encouragement to be found even in loss. Your vocal expresses a sensitive pathos, appropriate for the topic. Well done, my friend.

Wow man
This is really good prose. My connection here is slow so I read the lyrics before I listened. Amazing how sometimes the poetry we write fits so well with music.

From someone
who uses words and poetry as you do I'm more than pleased with your response Mitchell...... and it's weird how when we go on a writing spree it turns out to be in a particular rhythm; like this one turned out to be in waltz time, while others might be 4/4 time, without us even thinking about it, Cheers M

I'm speechless ...
I have rewritten this paragraph five times, struggling with words. I have never heard anything like this ... anything ... like this.

Just one Spanish guitar, and one of the most expressive, the most perfectly appropriate, vocal performances I have ever witnessed from anyone. The suddenly-distant echoing phrase in the last nine seconds, coming in the right channel as from a departing voice, is the icing on the cake.

"Not conducive to playing the guitar?" For this purpose you couldn't have played it better. I'm distressed to hear you say, "my breathing got the better of me," but this performance leaves me breathless.

I sincerely believe that you have written one of the VERY best songs in this genre that I have ever heard, and I hope that it gets played far, far, far beyond MacJams. It deserves to be.

It seemed to be the voice and the message that I needed to hear ... from every ... loved-one ... I have ever ... ... lost.

Well Mike
I'm so pleased the song had that affect on you; that's what I had hoped for, that people would find some sort of comfort.... while at the same time touching an emotional funny-bone (so to speak). Thanks a million for those very kind words, regards M

pleased you like the song Andrew, I'm really pleased that you liked the guitar part, because i had kept picking up the guitar for months playing those chord shapes and hoping some lyrics would come..... and they were there all the time without me realising... thanks again, regards M

So so pretty
My heart ached for those that have left us in life. But your song reassures us that they are still in our hearts and in our lives. Simply wonderful Maurice. The lovely poem you wrote is timeless and I'm so glad it helped others. Truly inspired by love.

Thanks so much for this one and for sharing it.

Hi Patty
After listening to your latest song post, it did run through my mind that you would do a wonderful accompaniment to something like this poem. I think we all need some reassurances in our lives, so if this can bring some of that and a little comfort, I'm more than pleased. Thank YOU for giving it a hearing, regards M

why
yo-mo. i really like the riff here....nice and exposed and stripped down. was first thinking there was too many words going on....but i got over that. difficult sticking two things together like this that weren't initially made for each other. but it works....well. i liked the outro with your voice in the back room...that was a really good choice. i thought it was probably too long at 7.39 and wondered whether the downbeat feel of it might send a few fragile wrist slashers over the edge. but you know what.....there's no better way to go than a mo-dirge.

As I said
above, it's more like a monologue with accompaniment.... I did shorten it, but as you'll understand the gist of the 'speech' would be lost if I'd cut any more.... glad you liked the outro touch..... it's not really downbeat Julian, it's giving hope that there's more to come after this...maybe I made it sound too good to resist; wrist slashers indeed! LOLOL..... DIRGE?? How very dare you Sir! Ha ha ha. I'm glad of your response Julian, cheered me up LOL, Cheers M

What a great song Maurice, heartfelt and your voice fits the lyrics perfectly... This song is sooo deep, that I can tell you had to pull it from the depths of your being... I didn't expect to see you here i must say, so thanks for dropping in. I stopped allowing voting on my songs a couple of years ago when all the silly 'bombing' was going on. Regarding the picture above; I tried to find an image on line, but there was nothing suitable, so i got my sketch pad and drew this in about 10 minutes with just pencil. I took it into I-Photo and in the 'edit' function, I gave it a pinkish tint, to take away the garish white of the paper. Again, thanks for calling in, regards M
