Guitars Venture Into the Shadows

Description
More guitars! This one is an attempt at the style of The Shadows and The Ventures, great guitar groups of the 60s from England and the USA respectively. The Shadows lead guitarist, Hank Marvin, was a special favourite.

There are two rhythm tracks played acoustically on my Maton FG100, (one open, one with a capo) and a lead played on the Ibanez AS200. I was looking for something different in the bridge, but perhaps went over the top with effects, with delay, sustain, flanger and vibrato from Garageband all added. There’s a bass line, and I used the iPad’s ProKeys app to put a strings effect over the last verse. The drums are Garageband loops.

Just a bit of fun, really. Hope you like it!

Authentic tone and phrasing...
Another fine instalment in the "Guitars on a ....." franchise. The Ibanez lead sounds just right, with authentic tone and phrasing and I like the string effect that comes in on the last verse. Like it! Talk soon, Peter.
P.S. No photo is showing up on my browser.

Thanks
The tone of the Ibanez is as close as I can get to that 60s sound until someone gives me a Stratocaster complete with a whammy bar! Photo should be there now - I forgot to load it first time. Maybe a " Guitars visit Brazil" tune next time? :-)

Praise...
for yet more excellent work--this had an outdoor, by the beach kind of feel to it. You are a musician I could listen to for a very long time and still want more...thanks again Phillip!

Thanks
I'm delighted by your comment, Michael! Thank you! Yes, there may be a touch of that surf sound to it, I suppose - I loved hits like The Chantays "Pipeline" and The Atlantics "Bombora", so maybe that influence has snuck in there somewhere!

Guitars Venture Into the Shadows
Has a surf rock feel to it but with a dark edge to it. Nice chord progression, and some tasty choices on the lead line.

I appreciate the comments on the chord progression, Dave - that's what it starts with, so that's the most thought-out part of what happens! Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment!

Guitars Venture into the Shadows
I'm going for a hint of Clapton in there with the styling, sounds slow but has some quite difficult licks in there a la Clapton (Slow hand!). Nice early rock edge to well done
Philip18 said 2083 days ago (September 9th, 2011)
Thanks
Much appreciated, Neil - I'll take any sort of comparison to Clapton, who's probably my favourite guitar player! The piece just sort of emerges as I try different things, so there's a fair bit of repetition needed to make it fall into place. Glad you liked it!

Guitars
Love it. I really enjoy when people are enthusiastic about their guitar tone and yours here is clearly very carefully considered. Excellent production and the music speaks to you. None if the notes are hurried and you get the impression that they were all hand picked, rather than just throwing a melody out there.the whole thing has time to breathe. Really enjoyed this.

Thanks
Glad you liked it, Stephen. Some things stick in your mind from youth - and one of those for me is the sound of Hank Marvin's guitar. This tune has "Geronimo" as its primary inspiration, and I'm delighted you thought the notes "hand-picked" . Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Glad you liked it! I enjoy sitting down and trying different styles, and if something emerges from what is essentially guitar practice, then that's good. Might try for something with a Latin flavour next time :-)

Guitars Venture
Back in the 90s my old band used to play some Shadows numbers ,I think a little bit reverb might do it ..I love the theme and the style you really nailed it ..well done ..thanks a lot for sharing !!

Thanks
When I used to play them I had a Roland Space Echo (which used tape to get the echo) for a Shadows-like sound. In fact, I have to admit I still have it and get it out occasionally. But don't you love Garageband that it can do all that? Thanks for listening!

Glad you liked it, Patty. I think maybe there was some Dick Dale guitar playng in those Tarantino movies, and he's certainly in a similar bag to the groups I was trying to sound like!

just need to vent
the ventures and southern california beach living... ah, my childhood. I love your title wordplay, and the guitar tone and playing seems perfect. The guitar that arrives at 1:10 perhaps could use a little less in the effects and high-midrange EQ department. However, I only suggest that because I enjoyed this so much... lovely.

Thanks
Glad you like the tune and that it reminded you of earlier times! I know what you mean about the middle section - I sort of felt there was too much there when I did it, but just kept fiddling with extra sounds. I was looking for something different and maybe should have gone back and listened to some of the Shadows songs where they did that "change the guitar in the middle" trick to see if I could get closer to that style. Something to work on next time!
