Description
I finished off this little song at the end of last year, but it didn't seem appropriate to post a ballad about a butterfly after the ground was covered with snow. I saw a butterfly flittering yesterday and it served as a reminder to post it now, before summer flies away again.

Lyrics
BUTTERFLY

She flits she floats
like a beautiful butterfly
she dances on the wind
as her spirit soars into the sky
it took a leap of faith as
she pirouetted into my life
come wrap your wings around me
pretty little butterfly

The years went by
I morphed into a dragon
I began breathing fire
barking, boasting and bragging
she flew away like milkweed seed
on the wind
but I never forgot the melody of the beautiful song
she used to sing

Thoughts flutter through my mind
like phantom butterflies
they flit and float
like dust motes in sunlight
memories of you take wing and soar into the sky
I'm standing here with feet of clay
terrified and muttering "why?"

Put me in a jar
and punch some nail holes in the lid
I’ll flop and flap around
as I atone for all the bad things I did
pin me to a display board
and I'll become your perfect specimen
I'm tired of the fight
I'm ready to take flight and let you win

First!
I like the surprising turn this takes. Almost sounds a children's song in the beginning - in the words, the vocal style and the musical accompaniment. Then it starts to turn a bit darker. The final verse is somewhat "out there", but delivered in the same style as the earlier section, which lightens it. Can't think who to compare it with, but I like it! Very clean production, too.

Have wings, will fly
Ha-ha-hah … I like the thought of being incomparable : )

I think one of my unstated goals as a song writer is not to be too predictable. Sometimes there's that lighting flash and the entire structure of a song is revealed in an inspired moment, but more often things develop, slowly, stage-by-stage, into a finished piece. And sometimes the catepillar gets its wings.

Thanks for the visit. I'll be checking out your catalog of work posted here at Macjams.

Good one Warren
This is a bittersweet song and your use of metaphors, I think, works more on the emotions directly than had this story been told more plainly. I love the style here! Quirky and different but I think that is what gives the music a solid contrast to the contents of the lyrics, which is very effective. Anyway, this is how I interpreted it all and liked this very much Warren. Thanks for sharing it!

Buzz brain
There seems to be a bug in my Macjams program!

I know you'd like to be a fly on the wall observing my recording techniques, but this is overt spyware.

This is the first time I have seen an image show up in a song comment, which is pretty inventive, as well as rather strange. And you call me "quirky and different"? Hah!

Thanks!
Acclamation like that coming from the author of that super-popular twisted drama "Emma" is high praise indeed!

Butterfly
Quirky cool with a 60's vibe. Strong, consistent imagery in the lyric "flits", "dances on wind", "soars". The airy music goes well with the lyric.

Sixties thing
I came of age in the 1960s … and now in age I'm in my (early) 60s … so I have that 60s vibe covered either way : ) Those things you point out were all conscious efforts.

Ok....
What is this really about? I think I saw the word quirky - which makes it cool in a quirky kind of way. or is that quirky in a cool kind of way.

Rat-a-tat-tat
Drumming (and all forms of percussion) remains a big challenge for me. I think I am getting better at using it for establishing rhythm and tempo in a song, as well as trying to use it as fill and accent. A large part of that has developed as a direct result of joining the Macjams social network and getting valuable feedback. I appreciate your comment … and I will check out your new post.

Quirky
and that is what I really like....as well as "Barking Mad" also oddball and daft as a brush get a look in and jolly well played too......this punches all those buttons and gets my thumbs raised in an approving manner....top notch

Barking mad
And here I thought it was the line about turning "into a dragon" that would tickle your fancy.

Unique
Hi Warren. This is one of the more unusual songs I have listened to on MJ but it captured my imagination and I really enjoyed the, almost, self-deprecating vocals. Really interesting drum rhythms and guitar work. Unique! Take care, Peter.
