Trimming The Wick

Description
Having gone through divorce a health scare and now redundancy 2011 could be for me what our British Queenie called an "Annus Horribilis " , I think that’s latin for "pain in the arse". Anyway I'm determined not to go under so decided to write something positive.
"Trimming the wick from the candle of chaos" was a phrase I think Jarvo used in a comment on one of our old songs and I liked it so used it as the basis for this song.
The guitar is in Open G and was a little phrase I'd been playing with for a while. A completely solo effort this one so no nice touches from Steve but hey he's not always around!
Well I hope this comes accross as positive. The love of a good woman has certainly helped get me through this year oh and Oxytocin is something I heard mentioned on BBC Radio 4
Apparently it's the "love drug" (check Wikipedia) and I don't imagine it's been used in many songs before this!! Cheers Mark

Lyrics
Trimming the Wick

The night has gotten so late
The hoot of owl
Meets the cry of the cockerel
The night has gotten so late

Do you know what?
The grass really is greener
On the other side of the fence
On the other of the fence

Do you know what?
I can really see clearer
From the other side of the fence
From the other of the fence

I’m trimming the wick
From the candle of chaos
Sorting the wheat from the heat

Ice in your heart will melt
And the blood it begins to flow

Just a droplet of tears
And a dreamlet of sleep

Oxytocin

Excellent song! Maybe your strongest melody and vocal (at least that I've heard). It's definitely my favorite. I love the delicate guitar accompaniment and percussion! A really nice mix!

The trimming the wick metaphor is cool and makes the perfect title.I like the restraint you showed on all of the accompaniment too.Sounds like just enough of everything.

Oxytocin :)
The love of a good woman :) I'm glad for that, because if you didn't I was going to fly out there and give you a big hug :P

Very cool lyrics, I only wish what sorting the wheat from the heat meant-hehe

Enjoyed it, thanks for sharing this one!

Nice song here - sort of English folk rock with foreign beats like bands such as The Imagined Village are doing. I don't need the oxytocin to feel the connection with this ;-)

Keep waving, not drowning...
Hi Mark. Well if this song is any indiction, you haven't gone under yet. Keep waving, not drowning. Love the opening riff combined with the percussive effects. The vocal harmonies work really well. Like this a lot. Downloaded. Thanks, Peter.

Love
the percussion and guitar combo. Just great.
Layered vox is gentle and melodic. Very, very nice

nice lyrics
The sound you get on the strings is really good. The percussion is kind of random, both in its pattern and in how forward it is in the mix. And even though this is old style folk/ethnic, the vocals are a bit loose rhythmically, as well. My ears prefer a tighter sound, and perhaps less space between sung lines, unless there is more compelling music to bridge the space. However, there is something in the sound you're achieving that drew me in, and I dig your lyrics.

Wonderful production. Really like the percussion and open chord sounding progression on the guitar. The vocals are fabulous as are the lyrics. This is a good song!
