Description
I was thinking about the upcoming Word Association challenge and decided to have a go at the concept with this track that I was working on. I picked a word at random and it was "Box."

I used to have a box of photo's of old girlfriends, journals, letters and other mementoes like that from another life. One day I stumbled across it in my studio area and realized that I am pretty happy with my family and there was no point in keeping all of that stuff. Seemed somehow disrespectful to my wife to have things I wouldn't share with her, so I threw it all out. I can remember thinking that I might feel the loss, but that wasn't the case at all. I did get a song out of it.

I used EXS24 and ES2 for the textural stuff, a soundfont of an old upright piano that I found online a long time ago, and some other random samples I made and manipulated in Logic. Logic's tape delay is as always the most important thing in the song. The vocals were just the rough sketch that I did so that I would remember them, and they sound rough, but I liked the croaking quality to them so I just kept them. This song is basically an acoustic guitar kind of ballad, but played with electronics.

Lyrics
there's a box
filled with letters and pictures and notes I don't want to give up
i've been saving these things for years
they don't make me feel young
they don't make me feel young

the way i used to
feel is irrelevant
the way I used to live
is pathetic
i keep trying to remember those times
the items in the box
i should make them go away

you are the present
you are the only one
you keep me guessing
i dont need to go back
i don't need this old box anymore

there were times when
everything was tragic
there were times
when i just felt bored
the way i used to
feel is irrelevant
the way I used to live
seems pathetic right now

you are the present
you are the only one
you keep me guessing
i dont need to go back
i don't need this old box anymore

i'm pretty sure i wouldn't use the word "croaking" to describe these cool vocals michael! i'm NOT going to make the comparison i often do to you-know-who .... i'm not, i'm not, i'm not. i'll just say that the feel of this song is magical, genuine and heartfelt. this is SUCH a keeper!

i can certainly understand the sentiment. also, i can see why you kept the original vocs. sometimes you just capture a moment and--even a better version--won't have the same feel. really good sound in the mix and very smooth tune. excuse me while i listen again...

never really been a perfectionist, gad you get it. question: is there too much bass on this? sounds right on my monitors and headphones and monitors, but in the car just now, everything was rattling. maybe I just need a more solid car?

Really nice moody concept piece. Kind of a left handed love song, great for the alternative contemporary crowd. You catch the now vibe. I was hoping for a surprise ending, but I guess real life is better without surprise endings... Quiet, tired, acquiescing, honest, your vocals sound perfect.

thanks man, I tend to prefer surprise endings in a musical setting, but for some reason it felt ready to end for me. I had actually written a bridge at that point and another chorus originally (you can hear part of the instrumentation of the bridge during the outro), but it started turning into a Beatles song and felt odd. I think I'm often more in the mode of conveying a mood than writing a pop song (although that happens too). thanks for checking this out.

master of minimalistic song-sculpture
and such a delicately crafted story in lyrics, poignant and universal. I am sure we all have had this box, this baggage, this dilemma, and often must decide to let it go and move on. The lessons are learned, and the box is no longer necessary for who we are. However, it is so hard to let it go. Your musical poetry is well portrayed, as always. I learn so much from your talent.

Excellent song and theme. Great vocals!! Similar to Tobin, I kind of expected a another instrumental return there in the end (think Eternal Sunshine of the Spoteless Mind). But I love this.

I was just listening to White Ladder by David Gray this week in my work truck as it had good memories for me about ten years ago. It's kind of interesting how much this would fit into the mix musically, The drum kit sounds very similar to the drumming on 'Babylon'.

The bass is perfect to my ears. It is kind of warm and enveloping.

I really dig the lyrics and I have a huge box of photos that I saved from times past, I saved a lot of photographs that I was proud of from my newspaper days and when looking more recently at them I felt no connection to them anymore and tossed them, I'm not quite ready to get rid of the really sentimental stuff, but I don't have anyone else's feelings to consider either. Anyways, good stuff, listened twice and downloaded.

David Gray was my soundtrack to the whole year 2000, when I lived in Portland, OR. Check him out he's well loved by both housewives AND hipsters. I'd have loved to go thru a website of someones old photos. I'm weird like that. Facebook stalking my friends' (and friends of friends) photo albums is one of my favorite activities.

this final mix is spot on. I like the high end electronic hummingbird effect that hovers around the edges. Very effective. At the same time your chord choices and changes are very evocative and unexpected - melancholy and uplifting at the same time. The minimalism of the piano sets a great mood. Cool song. I like "you are the present".

thanks. weird how noises that aren't really musical can just seem so attractive in a musical setting. a friend did a video with a remote control helicopter attached to a cam, and he can't fly the thing; it keeps crashing. i'm tempted to steal the audio from it and put it in the POD and then use his video.

hi M2. i promise you i am not commenting on this song just because you commented on mine (thanks for that, by the way). i listened to this earlier today during my 5 minute lunch break, but didn't have time to comment. well now i do.

you are some kind of song writer. this is yet another amazing piece to add to my ever increasing m2 collection. i love the synthy textures that hover on top of everything. the lyrics are interesting and relatable... and sung so sweetly. elements of one of my favorite artists, jeff tweedy. everything fits just right. thanks for this.

great song, major kudos to you for the lyrics... you captured a bittersweet kind of moment in a perfect way. and I haven't heard a song about that particular situation before although i'm sure it's common (i've done the same thing)...

the songwriting reminds me a bit of one of my favourite canadian songsmiths, a guy named Hayden. don't know if you've heard his stuff but some of it has a vibe kinda like this.

Hi Michael.....
This song is just great. The idea behind it is also a good one although not for me.

I have journals going back to 1971. I was still at high school and then I started work, going out, girlfriends, travels abroad to work, life happened in the moments between my thoughts, etc., but I don't think I could ever throw the words out. Not yet anyways. The photos were originally thrown out as and when but for the last decade or more I've just hung onto the images, again until I make room for other images in my mind. Then they can go.

Take care.

Paul

man i like that 3rd verse so much. right on. the reason i'm always happy to click into your songs is because you have such a firm sense of yourself and what you're trying to do musically, and as somebody obsessed with craft i get much joy from watching / listening to you do your thing. i'm sure I could go back into your catalog and find some lyrics that i like as much as these but this seems to me at this moment to be the best writing you've done.

so of course i have a story. i married right out of high school, and when it went to pieces i moved and threw everything out, i mean everything, i piled it up by the dumpster outside of our apartment. except for some stuff which for whatever reason i put into the trunk of my car. two big trash bags full. and i drove around with that stuff in the trunk for two years, like a bad metaphor come to life. and then the car broke down and i traded it in. and as i was leaving the dealership a tech ran out of the garage saying 'hey you've got a bunch of stuff you left in the trunk' and i stopped and it was like those moments everyone talks about when they think they're going to die, their life flashes across their mind only it was just me and that other girl, every last detail in a split second and then it was just the end of the film flapping on the reel and i said 'toss it' and he said 'you sure?' and i said 'yep' and that was the end of it. that's what this song reminded me of.

ha
that is a classic story, it's like a short story or a scene from a cool indie flick. I was picturing the music swelling as you walked away from the dealership. weird thing is that I didn't realize that the "box" of the past was such a common phenomenon. Seriously thought that maybe I was the only idiot who had one. Hey, what do people do when they break up now that pictures are all digital? dragging them into the trash is not nearly as consuming as tearing the pictures of the ex into pieces when we break up. my wife and I had a breakup at one point long before we were married. she tossed out her box with all of my pictures and the letters I had written her (the kind that require a stamp). interesting how similar everyone is, and yet we still focus on the differences.

Skilful balance and restraint in this piece - just the right blend of emotions, and your minimalist arrangement is dead on. Not too sparse, nothing overdone. I love the way you explore the topic and the range of feelings as you go through what it means to reminisce and also let go.

Production is clean and immediate, vocals speak volumes.
