Description
This song took a few turns on it's way to this destination. Sometime in August I found myself editing live drum tracks from Steve DiBenedetto of Airport Seven and ended up creating the clanking machinery track that is the first thing you hear. In trying to loop it I ended up at 159 BPM with the sample recurring every 4 1/2 measures. So I played to that and added a two chord pile up in the spirit of Mahavishnu Orchestra or some decaying brain cells that were talking to me at the time. So there's bass, guitar, organ, and horns all hitting those two chords in differing variations. Then I laid a 4/4 Bebop drum track over it and edited it with fills and breaks so it felt a little less out of time with the rest that was changing on 4 1/2 counts (and at 159 bpm it clips along). So - when I end up with a mess like that I always think WWAD? What would Andy do?
I sent my mixed track and stems to Andy Wigzell before his vacation and eagerly awaited what might return. I did the right thing. As usual he knocked me out with his rearrangement of the tune and tremendous saxophone improvisations. I tweaked the arrangement a little more and added phased electric bass the the song and some reversed guitar to the quiet section Andy had created. After some more additions - most notably Andy's excellent Bodhran and Tortoise shell percussion track to which I added a hoof shaker and some ankle bells - we consulted on the mix and here it is.

Thanks Andy - for making this happen.

Andy says:
In the Shadow of Saturn is a return to a first love for me. Maybe not first in terms of style but of instrumentation in the form of the alto sax; A 1968 Selmer Mark VI. My parents bought that for me when it appeared that I was going to venture more into the "study" of music. I was 13 years old then and have never let it go. I think of my mom and dad whenever I pick it up and appreciate their influence every day of my life. If I could be a third of the man my father was I would be a pretty good guy. On a more personal style I gravitate to the more avant-garde. Space Jazz, I've always called it. Which could be why I never really fit in to the more classic rock and roll bands. How many times have I gotten fired from such bands? I realized early on that I was just too dumb to give up on it all and so when I collaborate with Bud I always feel like I am home somehow. There is a sense of tension in the song which through emails we exploited thru the use of some sound effects and percussion. The thing I dug most about this tune was the driving drum cadences. This is what drove the song near the end. I was actually finished with the song due to a lack of time but then suddenly I found myself with an opportunity to do all the things that kept cropping up in my mind while I was recording the sax track. I had shrugged it off that we were done and when I got Kevin's earlier mix- there it was.... telling me that I only think that I am done. This has happened more than once when working with Bud.

Truly creative and atmospheric trip. There's a great avant garde vibe to the backing track. I like the inclusion of the bebop drumming. It brings to mind some of Coltrane's later works or some of Ornette Coleman's work. But the inclusion of electronic elements also brings to mind classic jazz fusion. Of course Andy is the glue the holds it all together.

I was more into Ornette than John
but both are giants. Had the pleasure of meeting Ornette on more than one occasion - and he's a wonderful man. He used to follow my wife's artwork and come to her openings. I wish I had the chops to play anything anywhere near as well as Andy - but I try my best to create an interesting environment for him to work in. It's always a pleasure and satisfies a desire I never thought I'd get to realize.

On the surface Andy and I might seem
like an unlikely duo - but that's how great music is and how cool this place we get to hang out is too. I miss the old shows where you might see Miles Davis and the Grateful Dead together. It really happened at the Fillmore East.

Yes, Ornette influence still lurking, Bud. I think I picked up Town Hall when I was dj'ing at WQSU '67-'68. Patty Waters, too. Great sax work by Andy.

I still have the Patty Waters LP also
along with Ornette at Town Hall '62. Mind opening for me at 14 or so when I might have first heard them.

Saturn
Although I'm not a great fan of the avant-garde jazz I enjoyed listening to this for it's sheer 'up for it' vibe, gusto and creativity. Saturn isn't usually associated with the modern though?! Jupiter is the planet associated with freedom which I get the feel of here :-) Nice to read the composition history.

Ornette did the music with Howard Shore
for Naked Lunch - good ears on that one Vic - and it's a great soundtrack. I used some of it in a spec commercial I directed many years ago.

Mahavishnic
The frenetic drumming under a slogging two-chord pattern creates a sense of tension, with the sax asking questions on top of it all. Then it starts a diatribe at about 4:00 as if it's all been figured out. Then it's over. No further need for discussion. Creative and exciting.

enjoyed the journey. Andy took the scenic way. Those drums are intense at times..in a good way, as in fast and furious. Very much had a live jam feel to it.

Psychedelic foreplay
Like one giant extended intro, all expectation and setting-the-stage. And then you realize that is the song. Like what Lennon said, Life is what happens when you're planning other things. I dig the sax. And effects. Nice journey. Unexpected and hip.

Evocative...
Made me think of a detective driving around confused and under the influence of some narcotic on a late night B-grade 60's cop show highlighting the "mean streets" of the city. Tension and confusion, lights intermittently flashing through the rain drenched car windows... Evocative! Thanks, Peter.

A little George Duke is in the house. Love the Miles vibe, Herbie and the Headhunters. I know where you were in the 70's. I am engaged in your fusion and creativity. Love the Trane. I,m digging it. The production is excellent. I tip my hat to you and all involved please expand.
