Description
probably should save this for the word association challenge as I based it on the word Breaking, but I was in a mood; mixed it and now i'm posting it. i'll just write another for the challenge. It's basically about all of those relationships that you can get in; they're not horrible at all, but they're not really going anywhere.

everything was done in Logic, all of the ambience was either the ES2 or parts of the vocals that I stretched out so that they were just weird sounding pads. I used a demo of a new plugin called relectro on the percussion. it takes things and changes the waveforms so they sound really different. I also used it on the synth in the bridge.

this is an homage to old 80's ands that I like: the Human League, Soft Cell, and Wire, although it's a lot more pop than those bands usually got. Particle Dots helped me out with an initial listening and the following advice:

"a great start...and my oblique inclination for you is to focus on the plastic

try to make it even more synthetic than it already is

its not synthetic enough

plastic is perfect
plastic is king"

Lyrics
i can see clearly now
that nothings meant to be
a series of accidents
are what led you here to me
a day will come when you'll
take stock in what we have
I'll do the same and we can
go our seperate ways

sooner or later
you'll be moving on
10 years down the road
we'll both have someone new
all of the things we take
seriously now
won't really matter
when we're moving on and on and on

not that it isn't easy
staying here with you
not that it isn't fun
when we do the things we do

sooner or later
you'll be moving on
10 years down the road
we'll both have someone new
all of the things we take
seriously now
won't really matter
when we're moving on and on and on

i tried and tried and tried
but I don't really think it's me
i can see that we
are really just not meant to be
i tried and tried and tried
but I don't really think it's me
i can see that we
are really just not meant to be

sooner or later
you'll be moving on
10 years down the road
we'll both have someone new
all of the things we take
seriously now
won't really matter
when we're moving on and on and on

Well done Michael!
Oh my goodness, you've stolen the song I was working on for the challenge! But all seriousness aside, Michael, I really enjoyed listening to this--I think it's a style of rock that agrees with me very much. This sounds like it should be on the radio and while this "plastic" style might work better, to me it sounds just great as is; I like the textured feeling this has. All around great recording/mix, song and performance. I'd be hard pressed to offer any suggestions, it's just plain perfect. Thanks for sharing this! Michael

You can
sure draw a listener in by the sound, the lyrics and the meaning. "Plastics" was the one word advice to The Graduate. Thanks.

Really nice!
Love the drums, chorus & especially the vocals in the chorus - is that an effect like ADT or similar you use?

thanks
the drums are: 1 track of the acetone rhythm ace rhythm machine, another track with a normal drum set in EXS that I turned off the sustain and decay on and messed with the attack until it almost sounded like it was reversed. relectro was responsible for the kind of metallic sounding drum bits.

as for the vocals I really didn't do much: I compressed the lead vocal to death, and gave it a touch of stereo delay and reverb; the background vocals are completely dry. the lead vocal is doubled in the chorus; also dry, but EQed differently than the real lead vocal. i had another version of the lead vocal that I used for the doubled part. some of the backups sound horrible when they're soloed as the EQs are meant to keep things from stepping on each other, rather than sound good as a standalone vocal (not to mention the performances are real sloppy - but their BG vox, so I didn't care).

Excellent song writing ..loved the keys tone you used here ..off course it has that vibe of the 80s but it has all your signature here ..you can make it more Human League with a significant snare and additional keys at the top ..but you did it very well as its all your own tone ..absolutely marvelous vocal works ..thanks a lot for sharing !!

Nice art work and an even better song
Hi Michael. Nice art work and an even better song. I like your understated vocals and the low harmony work. The chorus has a nice hook and, as always, you create great sound beds with the synths. Much enjoyed. Take care, Peter.

Flashback
took me right back to the sort of music i grew up with.

You do it very well. The vocals are just right, too; not too 'world weary' as singing styles tend to go now. Reminds me of a more hopeful time.

Much enjoyed.

I'm still fairly new here and it's taking some time to get familiar with different MJr's but now after listening to a few of your tunes you have a distinctive style that really stands out. There's a pop sense to your tunes and I really like your vocal style. There is something comforting about this tune ... This is a good song. One that I would want to listen to again. Downloaded for my drive to work.

I really like this tune, the atmosphere it creates is spot on and the vocal is brilliant. I like it as it is but this also has legs for a monster collab! Enjoyed well done

plastic is king
i like all the background sounds - the chirps and whirring - and the bubbly 80's synths - and the thumpy bass - and i like the lyric and the vocal delivery - it's really good. but i think it's missing backups in the chorus. I can really hear call and response type backups. I agree that plastic is king for this type of tune, but aside from seamless, plastic is also shiny - this is smooth but not so shiny. I'd add some shine.

Strong melody & vocals. The songwriting makes perfect sense, the relationship is dissected in the verses, and the hook "sooner or later" is the emotional payoff. Bridge comes at the right place and is a nice contrast both musically & lyrically to the rest of the song.

nice, clean production. as usual you've put together a terrific, radio friendly package. love the harmonies that come breezing into the chorus. you've got a great handle on vox.

the sentiment of the lyrics brings me down just a tad. "sooner or later you'll be moving on..." sounds a little like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

overall, i really enjoyed this.
michael2 said 2067 days ago (September 27th, 2011)
i see your point
although the song is written from my point of view now (as a happy family guy), looking back on those relationships I had in the past that were doomed from the start (only I didn't really admit it at the the time). meant as an analysis of past relationships, than a critique of current ones. interesting though: I know what I meant, but to the listener you're absolutely right. sounds like I am in a bad relationship and don't have the balls to leave. wonder how many times I've heard a song in my life and misinterpreted it.

or somewhere abouts. Human league, OMD etc. I get the influence. Like the concept of the song and especialy the lines, "all the things we take so seriously now won't really matter"...can so relate to that one. Good stuff mark

Understated vocal style, the lyrics and the music suit each other well - there is a sadness in the tone but a strong sense of movement. Good mix. Much enjoyed.

Human League
I hear the 80s connection.

This track lacks some excitement for me. All the ingredients are fine, and I see what you're trying to do, but it lacks something. Maybe just the mastering.

albeit composite
Hey Michael, this is tucked away in a nice bundle - definitely in what I hear as one of your "trademark" feel and sound that I like so well.

As I was listening, I felt this urge for it to burst into some harder guitars and higher pitched vocals... Does that make any sense?

That's not a crit - just this notion in my head...
