Guitars Visit Venezuela

Description
Another in the "Guitars" series! As they all did, it started by playing around with a chord sequence until a melody emerged. Two of the rhythm tracks are played on the Maton, with its new LR Baggs undersaddle pickup (which I'm loving). Another rhythm track and the lead is played on the Gibson Howard Roberts. Bass line added, and a few GB drum loops. Used the ProKeys iPad app for some organ over the last section.

Just having fun with guitars, really...

Hope you like it!

Guitars Visit Venezuela
Phillip this is so nice and dreamy ... just want to find a tropical beach to spend my days. Smooth sounding guitar sounds ... my only nit pic would be to soften the volume of the first lead chord at 07 ... it jumped out at me a bit and it would help to bring the general lead volume at 00:13 on down also. Otherwise it's beautifully played and all the parts are well recorded. That touch of organ is a nice touch. Really enjoyed this very smooth and well performed jazzy tune.

Thanks
I appreciate the close listening, Stan. I think I might need to listen on few different pieces of equipment to get the levels right - I tend just to use headphones. I pushed that lead line up a bit because I thought it got lost a few times. Glad you liked the tune!

Back for another listen
I downloaded this and had another listen with my phones and it's a pretty good mix! I still think that first chord at 07 catches me but the rest is real nice. I just had to say I really love your playing on this piece and that guitar you do your lead on has an amazing tone.
Cheers Philip and I would like to remove the extra l I added to your name above but it's too late for an edit.

Thanks
Much appreciated that you took the time to listen again, Stan! You're right about that chord at 07 - that should be gentle and it's not. Re the guitar, it's not a versatile one (only one pickup) but it does have a sweet tone for jazz. You can hear the model played to perfection on the CD "The Real Howard Roberts" - HR was a genius, IMO.

Very Nice feel.....
To this.... Been there a few times, back in the day love the food and
the Ladies but most of all the music is out of this world....
These days not much has changed..... Nice chord patterns as well....
I play them all the time.....

Never been to Venezuela myself, just picked a place in South America and a photo of a beach! Must get there one day. Yes, they're pretty relaxing sort of chords, fun to play over. THanks for listening!

A world tour?
Hi Philip. Nice latin feel. Smooth lead work. Like the organ addition as well. I can't wait for the instalment entitled, "Guitars Invade Iceland". Talk soon. Peter.

There's a thought
I do remember The Spotnicks having a hit in Australia with their version of Orange Blossom Special (I may still have the 45 rpm record). They were from Sweden, which might be about as close to Iceland as I can get the guitars to travel! Not sure where to next - maybe "Guitars take a Ride in the Country"?

Oh man....
This reminds me so much of when I was kid on the beach in Atlantic City and now and then the local musicians would sit on their blankets and chairs playing music like this. This was like someone just opened up the window and let that ocean breeze in...beautiful work here Stan--your guitar sings. I'm working on something just now and I'm finding out "for real" just how difficult it is to put things like this together (you do it extremely well). Thanks again! Michael

Really nice grove here Philip, awesome tone as always, well done
Philip18 said 2153 days ago (September 26th, 2011)
Thanks
Glad you liked it, Neil. I tried playing the lead line on the Maton, the Ibanez and the Gibson, and the last just seemed to suit this style of music. Of course, if you really want to hear the tone of that model guitar, listen to "Lady Wants To Know" on the CD "The Real Howard Roberts" - absolutely magnificent!

Sunny...
...and tropical sound. Really like this, especially the galloping pick up at 1:57! Only nit-pick would be some preferred breaks in the metronomic triangle(?) beat. Nice organ cadence at the end.

Philip18 said 2152 days ago (September 26th, 2011)
Thanks
Glad you liked it, Rosalind. Re the triangle, the drum track is something I probably don't pay enough attention to. I just picked Garageband loops. I'm not good at writing a drum part, so I have to go for collabs with a real drummer or put up with the limitations of loops. Ah well... Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.

Wow,
this is really brilliant!

Absolutely enjoyed this the whole way through. i am so impressed how you put all this together.

Everything fits so well, and the production is just right to my ear.

Thank you so much for a that pleasant, sunny beach feeling.

Cheers now

I appreciate the comments, Kevin. It was meant to be relaxed, and I do like the new pickup. I've always thought the best tone is just to play the guitar acoustically and mike it, but this pickup does provide another sound that has its uses. It is excellent for live performance!

Love the clean and thoughtful soloing... If I were producing, I might have added a half-time samba kick drum patten under it just for grounding. Delightful little dance!

Summer strikes back!
Love everything about this, guitars, organ and a great choice of drum loops! I'm a sucker for Maj7 chords and this puts me in a great mellow kind of mood.

Minor nit pic might be that the cool ending could have continued for a couple of bars more, but anyways: excellent composing here. Downloaded.

Glad you like the tune and the playing. Re the ending, you're probably right about that- with these guitar pieces, because they start as a chord progression, I perhaps don't give enough attention to the starts and endings. Something for me to think about in the next one! Thanks for listening and for taking the time to comment.

Good parts
But the whole is lacking some cohesion. That lead sound is nice and fat, but maybe too nice and fat. Right now it's too much like your soloing over a jam track, rather than the solo being part of the arrangement.

Guitar playing as such is great. Both lead and rhythm.

Philip18 said 2147 days ago (October 2nd, 2011)
Interesting comment
Well, you're right of course, Vic - that's exactly what I was doing. I think if I were going to develop this an area I'd work on would be making the melody more memorable. The soloing section is sort of using the philosophy of my old guitar teacher: "So long as you start and finish in the right place it doesn't matter what you do in the middle" This doesn't always lead to a cohesive tune :-) Not sure what you mean by "too nice and fat" for the lead sound? Thanks for the thoughtful (and thought provoking) comments, Vic - much appreciated!

VicDiesel said 2147 days ago (October 2nd, 2011)
cohesion
I was actually talking more about the mix than the composition. Your noodling is relatively ok with me. My concern was that your lead did not quite integrate in the mix. For that to happen you'd have to thin that lead sound a little, push it into the mix.
Check out my latest song called East Texas Landscape
Philip18 said 2146 days ago (October 3rd, 2011)
Ahh, understood
Thanks for the explanation, Vic. I think I set the level for the softest parts, and that perhaps makes the main section a little too forward. I think maybe I need to listen on several different devices to see how it all sits...
