Description
This is the fifth installment of summer tunes that I've made and posted here at MJ, Summer 07 being the first (and Summer 10 probably the best ;-) They are mainly loop based and made to get me started with making music after some time of musical inertia. Let's see if you can stay "inert" while listening to this one :-)

These summer tunes also tries to tell the story of my summer in some way. This year I was lucky with the weather during my holiday but after that it has been raining more or less constantly until a couple of days ago.

Our family went by car down to Hamburg, Germany, to fetch our daughter who had been working with horses there during the spring.

I also fixed my analog desktop (see song art) to get my new iMac as well as the speakers at the right height and get rid of the keyboard holder's legs. The problem was that my sound card, Creative's E-MU 0404 USB white, is not supported in Lion and probably never will, so I've been stuck with built-in speakers and headphones since July. VERY annoying not being able to test the setup... (At last I've found a decent replacement now, just have to buy it first. It's Roland Quad-Capture USB 2.0 Audio Interface if anyone wants to comment on that...)

The song is made up of 26 tracks (some just doubled and spread) most with looped midi instruments - and my new iMac hardly showed any green in the processor activity bars. The song is almost 4 minutes long and took like 3 seconds to convert the file from AIF to 256 mp3. That made me a little impressed ;-)

Well, let's see if you can hear anything of all that in the song. Or maybe you can hear something from your own summer. Anyway, hope you enjoy.

You may
have been away from posting for a while Henke, but you haven't lost your touch with those synths. I love the brightness of this as though summer is breaking in and lighting up the room..... excellent work, regards M

Thanks M
We do need some brightness and light when "autumn calls", don't we ;-)

It's just loops this time, and I did very few changes to them as well, so it's really "just a mix". But it was kind of fun to work on in spite of the fact that I had to do without the Logic Studio 8 stuff that didn't make it over to Lion :-/

Thanks again!

Classy and classic sounding
synth rock....shades of Vangelis,Wakeman and PatMoraz in this......I am in the middle of re~decorating and re~styling my "studio" so have got everything spread round the shoebox that passes for a house in the UK ! I wonder how long your studio will remain as tidy as the picture ? 80)

Great track ,just finished so play again...see ya.

From one shoebox to another
Actually my studio is kind of neat right now after a bit of cleaning yesterday. Can't make music if it's too crammed (with dust most likely). That's why I post so seldom these days ;-) Still, that daughter I mentioned above is studying now (at the Royal Institute of Technology, no less) and sometimes uses my studio as her work place, so it was not upgraded totally in vain... Thanks as always for stopping bye to listen and comment. I sure enjoyed your French little ambient ditty, by the way :-)

Take care and good luck with that re-decorating,
Henke

Summer 11
Nice track Henke, cool old school vibe here (Kraftwerk comes to mind)! The first part indeed gives me a sense of travel and progress (and that's not because of the car sounds).

The chords hits (01:45 for example) could perhaps be lower in the mix in my taste. They bring me out of the mellowness, but then I'm settled comfortably again in the second part. Nice melodies here. I wanted the little 02:55 - 03:10 structure to come back though! :)

Well done and congrats to your new iMac!

Hey, thanks
for the detailed comment. Much appreciated. Kraftwerk, eh? And Jarvo thinks Vangelis et al. I heard Tangerine Dream in that chord you mention (Livemiles, the Berlin concert). Sorry if it woke you up - maybe that was my intention, though ;-) I think you're quite right about the structure. Nothing comes back as it is now, which doesn't make it a radio hit. Instead you have to download and put on repeat, that is, if you can stand it...

Thanks again, and yes I do love my new iMac and Lion too, it's just that I thought I had hardly started to use that sound card OR Logic and it's already time to upgrade (for some serious money too, which is a problem when the roof is leaking at the same time :-/ No worries, that is fixed now...).

Take care,
Henke

Listening again on speakers at work with your comment in mind I must agree that that chord IS way too loud (could at least have been dynamic, at various levels different times). I don't care much for the car sounds either, at least one too many, and some of the fx sounds can barely be heard at all. Ah, well, better luck next time :-| /H

I Can Definitely
hear your influences in this (I also heard a tiny bit of Kraftwerk in there). Very full, clean sounds. I'll have to listen on headphones.

Thanks
Headphones is probably a good idea, since that's where it was mixed, just take care not to crank it too much too early (because of that main chord mentioned by aRcTip). Full clean sounds? Yeah, I tried not to mess around too much with the (standard) loops used ;-) Thanks again for listening and commenting. /Henke

Tack, Kenta!
I did have you in mind while I sat down to make this piece. Just tried to have a bit of fun with the (for me) somewhat limited collection of loops available. Glad you like it. I do too, I guess, even if I can hear things now that should have been done a little different(ly).

Today I'll be checking my sight again and maybe I'll get a new pair of glasses more or less for free since the last ones I got wasn't any good. If that turns out all right I'll go right downtown and get myself that Roland sound card. Håll tummarna :-)

You take care too, Kenta!

Sounds like summer ...
... or like a flight over all the worlds top beach resorts in 4 minutes. The percusive arpegios with some decent touches and sounds provoke musical imagination and make me hear things that are on the "other side" of the track. I like this very much, when the music is not "overloaded" and lets the listener get deeper into it and find the infinity of sounds hidden within. Music like this sounds always new no matter how many times you listen, you always find something wonderful there.
Madona`s Ray of Light came to my mind together with many other musical memories which I cannot fully grasp right now :)
Always glad to hear a new one from you and never disapointed. Much ENJOYED!
Cheers

Wow Honza
Your comment made my day! It is spot on for the kind of music I like. Not sure if this one really fits in that category, but if you say so :-) I can honestly copy your last line, always looking forward to something new from you (listening to Unbound now, it's great).

Thanks you very much and take care,
Henke

inert, alert, avert!
Cruising along the Autobahn, watching the elecTRONic lights pulse by through the tunnels and construction zones... as we wind our way through the Summer Countryside. The last few seconds were delightfully (tangerine) dreamy, but the whole thing was a treat. It looks like a very cozy musical setup... I expect more great music from you soon (perhaps a spacerace challenge entry for next month then?) :-)

Actually, when I opened the project I had the space challenge in mind, but then it took another direction and I fancied it would be a nice Summer piece instead. But I'm really hoping to contribute to the challenge in November, looking forward to it :-)

Thanks for your great comment, they always are.

You make good use of these loops - this is very cool. I like the change at 2:30. I think the key in working with loops is to come up with something fresh and original using them - you have accomplished that here - I enjoyed listening - thanks!

Nicely done.....

That's a risk
you've got to take when using standard GB loops ;-) I only noticed afterwards that I had used that final swelling sound on another of my own songs (Cerulean Dream (Stone of Aldur))...

Thanks for listening and commenting, always appreciated.

Take care,
Henke

P.S: Where the Heart is... Very nice and crisp. Enjoyed.

Definitely
felt as if I was cruising down a highway. Did you pass a lot of bicycles with bell gizmos attached to the handlebars? Because that could be the beeps. Fluid and echo-like and expansive. Beautiful soundscape. Thanks.

Thank you, Char
Nice to hear from you, hope all is well. Glad you could hear some FX sounds in there, even if they don't seem to come forward very well on speakers, at least not the ones I've tried it on. My only defense is I think it sounds quite OK on the headphones I mixed it on :-|

Thanks again for listening and commenting.
