Lyrics
my friends are in trouble
but i feel helpless
my friends are in trouble
but what can i do?

my friends are in trouble
what can i do?
my hands feel helpless
what can i do?

everyone that i know
is facing troubles
no one i know
is seeing the future

"What can we do?"
"Where can we go?"
my friends are in trouble
what can i do?

i just don't know
i just don't know
i don't know
i don't know

if i had the power
i'd just lift them up and help
but i have no means
there's little i can do

i can say that i understand
i can say "what can i do...?"
but really there's little
there's very little i can do

my friends are in trouble

I'd say,,,
Acoustic Rock as the genre. I wonder what the inspiration for this was.
Cool track. I like the subtle strings action too.

I'd go with Blues
I get your message clearly. I think it's time I write the Gospel answer to this excellent song. We all have the power to lift each other up. Recognizing the problem is the first step. You created a really moving piece here Smokey.

what can I do
I know the feeling, this struck me like a slow walking mud puddle I got lost in this, disturbing and well done!

Hm
Your normal tracks would be far out for most people, and this would be quite ordinary for most here but it's far out for you. At least for as far as I know your music.

I'd say you need to make a couple more tries in this direction. The guitar is good, but the bass follows the guitar & drum rhythm a bit slavishly. Drum is ok, but I would use fewer bass drum hits. Vocals are fine in some places and in others the pitch is all over the place.

After a while the mood of the piece really starts grabbing me, imperfect vocal and all, but that bass and bass drum remain somewhat irritating.

.
hey, thanks. i understand. i've been playing new parts and mixes for this in my head all day. perhaps i'll try a redo, but i fear i might lose the raw, error-filled imperfect angst of this version. (even the lyrics need work!) although there is structure, it needs to be enhanced by substituting some chords (or something) during the chorus-like section, and during the inter-verse breaks.

as for "normal": i have no idea what that is

thank you

Dreamy, spacey...
Hi Bill. An interesting post that derives its dreamy, spacey feel from the drifting vocals and the timing variations. Has a raw quality that tends to get to suck you in as you listen. Thanks for the post. Take care, Peter

Cool departure for you Bill! I like the acoustic guitar work and the fretless bass sound! The vibe of the backing track perfectly fits the pensive mood of the lyrics.
