Description
Blimey, 3 months since I posted a song... It seems to take us forever to do a song these days. I was hoping to get some real brass on here but unfortunately it didn't work out so it's midi I'm afraid and doesn't quite sound how it did in my head ;)

A song about Richard's perceptions of the 1970s.

Lyrics : Richard Marris
Music : Richard and Dick
Electric guitar and bass : Richard
Acoustic guitar & vocal : Dick
Drums : Garageband loops

Everyone's Drunk in the 70s © 2011 Marris/Langford

Go back to bed everything is alright
Mum and dad aren't having a fight
They just took the bottle down from the shelf
And drank it all down to be rid of themselves

Because everyone's drunk in the 70s
We're all modern now
So we do as we please
Straight out of the bar fall into your car
You've washed it away, washed it away

In the afternoon he staggers around
From a bandaged hand blood drips to the ground
A sleep and a smoke he'll be ready to fight
Gravel rash on a Saturday night

Nothing glamorous in the drugs around here
No snorting, no popping, just drowning in beer
Whatever it costs we cannot refrain
We've got no other way to deal with our pain

Is this all we look forward to?
We've seen it enough that we know what to do
So pick up your glass and drink it all down
Floating away until one day we drown

Really cool track Dick, the usual high standard of production and performance. Poignant lyrics too...mind you people are still pretty drunk these days too hehe.. where's that bottle of red I have in the cupboard?

Fast out the traps eh?
Thanks Steve. Lyrics are all Richard's work. Although people are still getting drunk I think there was a different approach in the 70s. Drink driving was accepted whereas now it's a social no-no.

Thanks for the listen!

Cheers

firsties - thirsties? oh dear...... :)

Drunk
Wow, this works on all levels--writing, playing, singing, production. Like the quiet verse, loud chorus structure. Lovely subtle arrangement touches in mix of acoustics and crunchy electrics; horns are perfect and poignant. And well sung, Dick. An all-around pro,radio-friendly effort.

Everyone's drunk in the 70s
excellent lyrics and the way you sing it. Musically I like the way it starts with that cool guitar progression and it's great when the crunchy rhythm kicks in.The midi horns are a nice break... harmonies build but I really like the way you bring it down at about 1:38 with the vocals and that nice acoustic chordal strumming section you got going on... excellent!
Enjoyed the mix.

Richard - i'm LOVING your perceptions of the past. Delicious lyrics - and Dick - DAMN you sing them so fine! Intro was a blast, and the music keeps moving with power. 1:27 was one helluva dynamic spot - loved all that chaotic coolness there. "gravel rash" - ! exciting playing, Guys, and the mix is fabulous. your fan, Anne

I
can relate to this, I remember the 70's well with all the drunks, especially at Christmas. Remember the Pipkin 7, them enormous beer cans that everyone took to parties and could never open? No tin opener and a guy with a hammer and screwdriver instead......usually worked!
Great track and wonderful lyrics. I love the dynamics in the song, great chorus and your vocals are superb.
Great production Dick and nice acoustic guitar in the verses.

The difference these days is that people seem to be more aware of what they're doing but don't seem to care

In the 70s I don't think there was an awareness of what states they got into.

It's as much about how attitudes have changed over the years. Far less DD now. I was "done" in the 70s for DD and I was "lucky" I got caught when I did as I was only just over the limit. Any other time I would have melted the bag... not big, not clever but it's what we did.

Thanks for the comments.

Wonderful production and performance...

I was often drunk after eating fondue in the 70's, cos you had to drink alcohol otherwise the cheese would harden in your stomach and you would die - that's what they told us anyway in Switzerland.

A deep subject. Very well produced and performed Dick. And well written for that matter. Just a cool track! Solid
The sound is thick and yet clear, the songwriting fine, the brass not nearly as bad as I feared. In all a good song, except....

The vocals are a tad iffy. In particular the first two chorusses hover somewhere around the intended pitches, not really hitting them. Kind of a pity. The rest is radio ready.

I always really appreciate your comments.

Yes, you're right. I was never really sure about the melody on the chorus and I think that may have manifested itself as an insecure vocal which you've picked up on. I don't think it mattered in the end but interesting you commented on it.

Thanks for the thoughtful insights.
