Description
This song is essentially the same as that previously posted, but greatly enhanced by Loob's percussion, and I thought it worth offering up again to see if others agree. Freddy also remastered it for me.

With thanks to Freddy for his support and expertise!

Lyrics
The Broken Ground

I’ve seen hosts of angels,
Fighting just for me,
And I’ve seen heaven’s glory,
So beautiful and free,
But tireless and fell are they,
That keep the field in Satan’s pay,
And on and on and
on and on and,
on and on and
on and on and,
on,
the battle goes....

How bright the light immortal,
It’s more than words can say,
And the undying evil,
How powerful are they,
But mortal is the suffering field,
Where neither God nor Devils yield,
And though the horns and
Bugles sound,
They stamp and run,
And fight so hard upon,
The broken ground.

I instantly was captivated by this piece Marc.
I remember you telling me that you were in a very dark place emotionally when you wrote this, and man does it ever come through as dark! That in itself is a scarey thing, because it does convey that so well. But as we know life in general can be scarey at times. I find it just so cool when people are successful at capturing a mood and setting a virtual stage with their work. This one certainly does that. My mood instantly changes when I listen to that. A pleasure working with you my friend!

Hi Marc. Wow. This is definitely one of your best. The song is really strong and the instrumentation and percussion just adds layers of interest and quality to it. Freddy did a great job on the remaster, too. Congratulations to both of you. Take care, Peter.

Man, what a little percussion and production can do! Freddy's contributions really lift up this well-penned track. I'm hearing all sorts of arrangement touches I hadn't heard--strings, etc. Especially love that de-tuned guitar. Great collab, fellas.

Hi John
i agree completely. Freddy has really done something with it.

The de-tuned guitar sound is from an electronic sitar played right down at the bottom of its range.

More of what
I said about the first version.....the muted trumpet seems more suited to the tone and timbre of the lyric and the battlefield percussion.....and it proves that mix/mastering is in and of itself an artform.

Hi Jarvoid
Thanks for going through the whole thing again and leaving your thoughts!

The Broken Ground
Cool lyrics definitely deeper then your average folk/rock song, I like the allegorical use of "the broken ground". I like the intro riff on the guitar, and Fred's drums are always a welcome addition.

It is better
with Freddy's drums. I also am reminded of Donovan. You have the voice for folk ballads. Thanks, guys.

A couple things come to mind...
First, I love the idea of introducing "microtonal shadings" into western music (e.g. de-tuned sitar). I think our ears are about ready to explore beyond the twelve-tone scale. It always draws my interest when I hear it. It's like a "huh?" moment.

That said, this reminds me of some of the old King Crimson kinda prog. But I'd like to hear a much more lush brass orchestration where the trumpet comes in to add contrast to the quieter bits. Check out the horn fanfare on my version of "The Minstrel Boy" to hear an example of what I'm thinking. It's a short bit but I think you'll get my idea. When you speak of such lofty things as angels and devils I think it needs more of a shiny punch.

Just an idea - for what it's worth. ; )

Thanks
for the your thoughts on the track.

i liked the de-tuned sound of the sitar, because it helped create the distressed feel of the song, though i find it is only these 'slightly deranged' settings that seem to call for such sounds.

I am not really very familiar with King Crimson, so i hope they were good! It is nice to know that i sound like someone!

Your wish for a more brass is interesting. I suppose my only reservation is that the song is not about devils and angels, which i agree would need a much bigger sound, but the broken ground that suffers under them. Thus the glory of 'heavenly warfare' becomes a melancholy and wearisome business, repetitive and painful, as in actual conflict, and the single horn is reminiscent of that feeling. i will certainly check out the song you mention, and let you know what i think.

Thank you once again for listening and especially sharing your ideas.

Cheers now

calming
thoughtful lyrics, and top notch production. I really like the horn line(s). My one suggestion is a lyrical one: phrases like 'beautiful and free' are so oft-used that they almost lose their meaning. I'd counsel you to find something a little more irregular so that you can communicate your message better. Excellent work.

Thanks
for the comment. i take your point about the cliched lyric phrases. In this case, perhaps, the cliched nature of the lyric might enhance the weariness and repetitive angst of the subject? Just a thought.

Thank you for listening.

broken ground
hauntingly good. dark in places.....and freddie's percussion enhances that.
the lyrics are scary and shouldn't be read by children. the playout with darth vader on lead vocal was the final straw....i'm off to slash my wrists.
depressingly excellent track. congrats to both.
