Here and There (SpaceRace 2011)

Description
The first of three pieces I composed for the 2011 Space Race Challenge, this has two tracks of the free Alchemy Player synth with somewhat modified presets, and two tracks of Orchestra Tom loops. The introductory sounds end on a held C chord and the sound changes, or develops, as the keys are held. This fades into the opening C chord of the second segment, a la Pink Floyd (I think that's from whom I "borrowed"), and the melody is a progression of moody chords. The two tracks of toms have different rhythms, just for fun ;-)

The image is of an untethered astronaut, a long, long way from home. Those toms may be the sounds of his own heartbeat.

Floating
Drifting from a dream to a reality.
Relaxed as these tones carry me along into the void.

the space between the notes
... filled with the heartbeats of discovery, longing, wonder, and dreaming of home. the notes hang suspended, as electric dragonflies dance between them.

Sedate
Somehow reflecting both the vastness of space, and and almost dreamlike voyage back into the womb at the same time. Ethreal.

Untethered
The sound and photo go together so well. It's very lonely, although in reality I doubt that the astronaut was feeling lonely at the time. Probably exhilaration. There is a definite feeling of floating above the world in this piece. Looking forward to Parts 2 & 3.

Lonely,
except for the reality that someone is taking your picture. "Someone" is always watching no matter where or when we are. I'd be super scared to be suspended in space like that. You achieved a sense of vastness and grandeur that is all that lies beyond our home. Thanks.

In space
I believe, nothing can be heard. So the idea of making "space music" is a bit of a misnomer really! However, the percussive elements you've used here seem to be the sounds of space ships docking and also the noise of the thrusters on the astronauts backpack, to my ears at least.

This is really nicely constructed and I too am looking forward to hearing parts 2 and 3. Nice one Richard!

Dave, lighten up on the "space music" thing ;-) And see above re: no parts 2 & 3. There will actually be 1 1/2 more posts in the SRC, but they're not related to this one. They're pretty good too, I think ;-)
Thanks.

Vastness and majesty...
Hi Richard. There is a similarity between many of the pieces in the Space Race Challenge but all do a great job of evoking feelings of vastness and majesty. Your entry does this very well, too. Like the way it resolved into the ending. Thanks, Peter.

I would be afraid of heights XP
Very nice piece Richard, I love the organ sustain to give it an ethereal or religious feeling. The spaciousness is conveyed here with the sparseness of the sound scape-well done!

Thanks for sharing this one :)

I do notice that
aall that I have so far heard of these Space Race Macjam Challengey thingies has a common theme running through them.....which given he theme is understandable but also given the independence of the creation of the individual pieces is astonishing....it is the boggling at the perceived vastness of where we have parked at the side of the cosmos to live out our existence for a brief flash in the seemingly eternal starglow of space.....and this also reflects that very nicely....great job,d/ld and faved.

Cheers

Very nice
You've managed to get quite a lot out of a very few sounds. This has a rich emotional range, and I enjoyed it immensely! It DOES end rather abruptly, though; can that be fixed?

Love,

Tremendous atmosphere to this piece
Considering there is on atmosphere space! :) Nice choice to use the toms - they are an effective contrast to the higher pitched synths and sustained notes.

Thanks too for your descriptive artist's notes that tell us what you are doing musically (and with some pieces how you do them). It's all good grist for the learning mill and lets us appreciate your creations all the more.

Take care,
Doug
