Description
I tried with this piece of music, to capture all the drama, beauty, power and size (hence the length of the piece; bwt 5 mins) of this wonderful place. can you believe the distances shown in this Hubble captured picture above? It stretches for ‘light years’ not just miles
I played this on my m-audio in one go using the Alchemy synth (Steamworx) and added drums and cymbals to describe the explosions of gas and stars and the tinkling piano for the Stars within this fantastic cloud out there in space. I wanted to capture the emotions and sensations of surprise one would get, if we were to be floating toward and through this fantastic place. Hope you like what I did.

Here is the description printed on the NASA site from which I got the picture.
(Carina Nebulae
This craggy fantasy mountaintop enshrouded by wispy clouds looks like a bizarre landscape from Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image, which is even more dramatic than fiction, captures the chaotic activity atop a pillar of gas and dust, three light-years tall, which is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being assaulted from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks.
This turbulent cosmic pinnacle lies within a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7500 light-years away in the southern constellation of Carina. The image celebrates the 20th anniversary of Hubble's launch and deployment into an orbit around the Earth.
Scorching radiation and fast winds (streams of charged particles) from super-hot newborn stars in the nebula are shaping and compressing the pillar, causing new stars to form within it. Streamers of hot ionised gas can be seen flowing off the ridges of the structure, and wispy veils of gas and dust, illuminated by starlight, float around its towering peaks. The denser parts of the pillar are resisting being eroded by radiation.
Nestled inside this dense mountain are fledgling stars. Long streamers of gas can be seen shooting in opposite directions from the pedestal at the top of the image. Another pair of jets is visible at another peak near the centre of the image. These jets, (known as HH 901 and HH 902, respectively, are signposts for new star birth and are launched by swirling gas and dust discs around the young stars, which allow material to slowly accrete onto the stellar surfaces.
Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 observed the pillar on 1-2 February 2010. The colours in this composite image correspond to the glow of oxygen (blue), hydrogen and nitrogen (green), and sulphur (red).)

gamut
in order to capture the scale, the magnitude of even a small part of the cosmos, e.g. carina... from the subatomic fusion to the light-year-wide supernova debris... it requires many notes and textures, dissonance and consonance... you have captured this love-affair with aplomb.

Simply gorgeous! It's so cool how I listened to Richard13's submission right before yours....his was very light, lonely, the expanseness of space. Yours is grandiose, booming, the wonder of space. Space is so many things! Only comment -- it seemed to cut off right at the end, didn't fade like you might have intended?

So pleased with your very kind comment.......... and about that ending; I tried and tried to get it to fade on the MP3, but it kept clipping the end off. It played fine in GB and in I-Tunes, but from the desktop it clipped...... so annoying..... though I think I've sorted it now, alas too late for here..... again I appreciate you listening and commenting, regards M

Thank you Ex
I appreciate that nice comment.... I did ponder whether or not to put it under Ambient or not and though it sounds so 'big' it's just one track of the main part ,melody and chords and then I added one track for the piano spangles and two more for the drum-roll and cymbals respectively...... so in effect it was quite simple. Really pleased it turned out so full sounding, regards M

Very pleased you liked this so much and yes, I was looking at something nice it was the picture above as well as others of the same nebulae...... whenever I think of 'space' i tend to always remember this particular part for some reason; maybe it's the beautiful turquoise colour that attracts me and maybe that's where I'm from LOL..... I only just found out that it's name was 'Carina' though...... thank you once again for dropping by to listen, regards M

Henke said 2036 days ago (November 1st, 2011)
I'm blown away, M
Blown into space by this awesome and inspiring piece. You set a high standard with this first entry in the space race... Did you really play it all in one go, as in an improv? To me that makes it even more incredible :-)

If I may offer one little critique, it would be to let the music finish before cutting it short. To me that's almost like a slap in the face, when the music suddenly is taken away from you, while being - literally - in heaven, even if just for a couple of seconds.

Anyway - really good work, Maurice. Thanks for the download!

Take care,
Henke

I did explain to SomeMadgirl above about that cutting short thing..... it played fine in I-Tunes and in GB, but when I played it from the desktop Mp3 icon it cut the faded end off. I took it back to GB and lengthened the end to give more fade time and back again to desktop and it sounded fine, but when i posted here it was cut..... very annoying I agree. Nevertheless I'm so pleased with your response to this piece and YES, I did play it all in one, just went back and lengthened chord lengths in a couple of places, but that was it apart from adding the other bits and pieces. Regards M

Great cinematic opening for starters. Very epic sounding. Truly grand with the orchestral flare of drama. This is a wonderful piece Maurice. You are truly gifted for making music in all genres.

geeze Maurice you have a knack for orchestral!
This does indeed have a feel of space and vastness to it! I've been telling Yves I want to try my hand at some orchestral type strings with tympany and probably Gong (is that what I'm hearing?)It has a simplicity and depth at the same time. I like this a lot buddy! Good work!

Hi Freddy
Glad you like this and the sound...... well although it sounds like the Halle Orchestra, it's just a synth and the main part is one track played with both hands (I don't do that often), then i added midi drum rolls and midi cymbals with the odd tinkling piano for the stars.... so only four tracks in all..... really pleased with your response, so thank you for listening, regards M

I think Douglas Adams
summed it up the best in his introduction to Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy "Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space."

Lovely musical adaptation of the sentiments therein expressed.

Cheers

I don't think we humans are truly capable of comprehending these vast distances.... thank God we now have these wonderful telescopes such as Hubble, so that we can at least see a small part of what is really out there..... we just have to sit an wonder at it all.

Drama and awe
Comes from every bar of this Maurice--a very accomplished piece (the strings--those little devils--sound brilliant) and by gosh, I am stunned. You've done a very skillful job on this and it's a true gem. You never fail, so if my praise sounds prosaic at times, it's due to your talent. Thanks again, Michael

for the very welcome and kind words.... I'm really pleased that you enjoyed this so much.... as you will have heard, I always try to go for emotion and I think those sometimes 'plaintive' sounding strings, brought that to the fore....... though all the 'orchestral' part was only played on one track with two hands, so a lot of the work was done by the synth, best regards M

So lush,
so cinematographic. This is music waiting for a film. Writing music this nakedly 'majestic' is a real tightwire act: the second you lose your conviction, you will fall. You've done an admirable job not only in pulling such grandeur off, but in making me want to experience these unclouded emotions for myself one day. Thank you!

Love,

Carina, O Wondrous Carina
This really is grand and sweeping in its extent. It flows easily and with slow and beautiful purpose which nicely outlines the shape and activity of your subject.

I could easily hear the lead synths played instead on strings and have this gorgeous melody re-purposed as the finale for a 30's romantic period drama (you know, parting of the lovers, longing looks over the shoulder, train departing....). On the other hand, as describing the wonder and grand scale of star formation in this nebula (the top of which I think is called the Eagle Nebula if memory serves) this piece is magnificent. It is almost romantic - musically - in style. Most impressive from beginning to end. - OK, I'm having another listen....

Bravissimo Maurice, Bravissimo!
