Cryogenic Dreams [ Space Race 2011 ]

Description
Note: 00:00 - 01:30 is an introduction, don't go away!

Scene setting: "Our hero is the sole survivor in his spacecraft where horrible events has taken place. After damage control and sending a distress signal, he enters the cryo chamber hoping someone will pick him up even if it will take thousands and thousands of years.

While the ship's AI is controlling his REM-sleep before entering final cryo hibernation, our hero dreams..."

Ok, I'm not much of a Sci-fi writer and the inspiration here is from the movie Alien. Anyways: this is my first entry for a challange. Not so original idea perhaps (noticed there was a similar entry by Reinholt last time around for example) but the concept of cryo sleep sort of fascinates me.

escape velocity
can we ever achieve escape velocity from "horrible events"? Or do we only have enough energy to barely orbit the wreckage, as the debris haunts our dreams for thousands of years?

This idea catches the interest of many people, probably because it is a human gift/curse... to be able to remember the past, and to escape from it.

Well done, love the soft and harsh interplays here, as you dance between dream and nightmare.

ttfn,
Drakonis

Great sounds
at opening and throughout.... the heartbeat is good in there too..... very spacious and dreamlike as if in a half sleep and hearing extraneous noises clanging doors or pistons etc..... It's very evocative of being in a space-ship in outer space I must say..... enjoyed, regards M

Thanks Mo! Dreamlike yep, the lead for example was just dotted down on feeling with some adjustments (for better or worse) in an attempt to accentuate just that.

aeons pass
by, metal rots to rust and still he sleeps, still he dreams; protected by a metal and glass womb and mother of silicon. When the sun finally rises, the universe will be different, will he?

Sci-fi scene
"Don't go away!" Hahaha. Not to worry. It's truly captivating. Your music really evokes the theme. Excellent work with the ship sounds, the machines working without complaint while our hero is lost in dreams. It's a beautiful piece, full of wonder, and so expertly constructed. I love the fact that you let it go on, and didn't find an excuse to abbreviate it. Envy this way comes.

Awesome
I shouldn't listen to this, it is too good and I don't know what to make of my own piece ;-| I can only echo what Ex-Silentio said and congratulate you to a really great piece. Superb sounds, strong feelings, good composition (well, it is rather long but they are minutes well and gladly spent) and great song art as well... Thanks for the download, I have a feeling this will be played more than once :-)

Take care,
Henke

Other World
The dreamer awakes, but reality lies behind closed eyes and beneath the shallow breath of sleep. An eternal life lived in a second. An emergence into a cold, harsh realm.

A fantastic dream shared. Gratitude.

very "Blade Runner"-esque with the echo e-piano sound grounding the more spacy synth textures. Nicely done.

wow
so much to like here. the machine sounds at the beginning with that wandering kick drum, such insect devastation. then things get really calm and pretty (unless the goal is loneliness and desolation, in which case their is something wrong with me). it's an uneasy sort of rest. beautiful synth sounds as well what synths did you use on this one? really jealous of this one. techie question: some of the synth lines seemed as if they are delayed and panned on the delay; did you do that with a delay or is that another track of synth (or some tricky synth patching)? great job. I listened to the whole 7 minutes and it didn't feel too long at all.

M2
Thanks for listening so closely Michael! "Uneasy sort of rest", yep it's what I aimed for. It's closer to 9 minutes actually and could have been even longer. I pondered breaking it up in two parts and expand the introduction even more but I ran out of energy.

The kick drum is a heart beat sample, EQ'ed with more bass. Wanted it to slow down during the intro as the hero is put to rest, but couldn't figure it out so I used chopping instead.

I'll get back to you on the other stuff. I used the Crystal (which is great for ambient stuff) among others.

Great job on the story and music. Sooner or later the science becomes reality.

A very organic sounding piece with great accents to create a sense of pacing for our protagonist.

You must have an incredible amount of patience to just let these sounds drift and develop and flow. I try to break free of my “it needs a beat, it needs a melody, it needs common structure” mindset, and it’s tough. Nice work.

I admit that sleep and dreams are my escape. This is chill but also comforting as sleep is meant to be. He is not needed as the ship takes care of itself. He will awake to a new world or he will go on dreaming. Well done. Thanks.

Cool...I listened to
this as I submitted my pile of poo to the Challenge ..loved the keys .......the title reminds of the title to a Phillip K Dick short story "Do Androids dream Of Electric Sheep?" which of course became Blade Runner ....this would not be out of place in the movie...

cheers

excellent theme - we all dream when we sleep. if we have a long enough time, we might remember, even in our sleep. In my dreams, it is rare to get music, but often voice... always visual

No worries - I did NOT plan on going away
Superb dream and inner space effects. The echoes on the metal strikes are evocative of the 'endless corridors of your mind', and set up a nice contrast between the disaster and the peace of undisturbed sleep.

The situation you set up works well for me! maybe SciFi writing is in your future - you could create ebooks with their own soundtracks. :)

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Thanks for allowing dloads!

Cool!
Your unusual, open chord structures seem to have become your signature. Really enjoy your explorations into these open spaces! I've listened to this one a few times, and you repeat the theme enough times to make it memorable, but the unexpected chord changes make this track on one the hand soothing, on the other an uplifting journey with an unknown destination.

Uplifting journey with an unknown destination
Thanks Pari for the nice comment. I think you described it very well. Open chord structures? Not sure exactly what you mean (I know about open chords on the guitar), but it does sound good and unexpected things is always good in my book!

to clarify...
what i meant was that i've noticed before in your tracks that your chord changes (not really chord structures...you're right) have an open feel, they're not following the usual progressions one could expect and also move between major and minor without settling down on one or the other. a style i really like!

This feels like a robotic love song. Circuits warming, lights flashing, zeros and ones intermingling. There's sort of a sadness going on as well, as if the machines realize they can't feel true love, but they want to so bad.
